Next Global HF Weekend: March 30, 31, and April 1, 2018

Next Global HF Weekend: March 30, 31, and April 1, 2018

It's still a couple weeks away, so be sure to mark the next Global HF Pirate Weekend on your calendar.

The idea behind the Global HF Weekends are to promote friendship through radio around the world. The hope is that listeners will be able to hear different stations and for broadcasters to reach distant locations. Anyone may participate.

The last one, which occurred during the first weekend of November 2017, was very successful. A handful of North American stations were reported on Europe and vice versa. And South American stations were heard in the North. Other stations were active specifically for the weekend, but just for a local or regional audience.

We'll see how many stations show up during the next GHFW. It seems unlikely that stations will be using 13 meters this time and much more likely that stations will be trying the 6900-kHz range and possibly 31 and 25 meters.

March 30, 31, and April 1, 2018
Maybe 15010-15090 kHz, probably 6200-6400 kHz and 6800-6990 kHz

Of course, these were general frequency ranges used by pirates during prior Global HF Pirate weekends. Some stations will surely operate on frequencies and times outside of these ranges. In fact, the way conditions have been lately, frequencies at or below 15 MHz seem like they will be more effective for intercontinental broadcasting. These will be updated on the Hobby Broadcasting (http://hobbybroadcasting.blogspot.com/) blog as it happens and also check the loggings on HF Underground (https://www.hfunderground.com/).

India releases ham radio license figures

India releases ham radio license figures

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released the amateur radio license figures for 2017-18

The figures are given in the 2017-18 DoT Annual Report and show 628 new licences were issued, a record number. The report also notes that 2594 candidates took the amateur radio exam.

The large discrepancy between new licences and candidates suggests it is still difficult to get the Government to issue licences.

Indian Amateur Radio Licences by Jose Jacob VU2JOS

The licensing system in the Republic of India has always been very bureaucratic. The form filling exercise involves supplying height, eye color, occupation and details of your Father (but not your Mother!). In addition applicants have to go through police checks to prove they are a suitable person to hold a licence. In the past this process has meant a delay of between 12 and 24 months before a licence is finally issued.

There are two licence classes in India, General (400w HF, 25w VHF/UHF) and Restricted (50w HF, 10w VHF/UHF). A licence costs 1000 rupees ($15) for twenty years or 2000 rupees ($30) for lifetime.

You can download the DoT Annual Report from

National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR)

'China Radio International' to be rebranded as "The Voice of China"

Excerpts from a news report published in "Times of India "...

BEIJING: China on Wednesday announced a series of changes aimed at strengthening its global influence, including the creation of a centralised news service to better communicate the ruling Communist Party's message at home and abroad.

Control of radio and television will be placed under a separate government-run organisation tasked with "carrying out the party's propaganda guidelines and policies".

As part of the change Chinese state media outlets CCTV, China Radio International and China National Radio will be consolidated into one super-broadcaster answering to the Central Propaganda Department.

Programmes targeted at foreign audiences will be rebranded as "the Voice of China", the announcement said.
