"Sudan Now" – DW Arabic launches new radio program for Sudan

"Sudan Now" – DW Arabic launches new radio program for Sudan

DW is now broadcasting a 30-minute daily Arabic-language radio program entitled "Sudan Now" on shortwave, Hotbird and SES-5 satellites and via the DW Arabic website.

As an unbiased radio program, "Sudan Now" will provide listeners in the target region with unbiased coverage of current issues in the region and will promote political, social and cultural dialogue through interviews, talk shows and reports.

Given the lack of independent information sources in Sudan and the limited ability of established media to broadcast due to internet outages and ongoing fighting, "Sudan Now" was specifically designed to be broadcast on shortwave and via the Hotbird- and SES-5 satellites. The satellite broadcast enables listeners in the target region to receive the program via their TV sets.

DW Managing Director Programming Dr. Nadja Scholz: "The conflict in Sudan is ongoing and has far-reaching effects on the entire region. It is absolutely necessary to provide the people there with a dedicated program that enables them to access independent, current and in-depth information. With shortwave radio, we further increase our ability to reach as many people as possible."

Manuela Kasper-Claridge, DW editor-in-chief, said: "The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains catastrophic. There is a lack of everything – including free, independent information. This Arabic-language radio program is therefore urgently needed."

The program broadcast will begin on Monday, June 26, 2023. It will air daily from Monday to Friday at 2:30 pm (local time, GMT+2) for a duration of thirty minutes. A repeat of the radio program will air daily at 8:30 pm.

"Sudan Now" can be heard in the afternoon on shortwave 15275 kHz/17800 kHz and in the evening on shortwave 15275 kHz/17840 kHz.

For six-and-a-half decades, Germany's international public broadcaster has been providing the world with news and information. Deutsche Welle's offerings are more diverse and widely used than ever before.

"Dear listeners in faraway countries" — with these words from German President Theodor Heuss, Deutsche Welle (DW) began broadcasting on May 3, 1953. Germany's foreign public radio station was charged with providing audiences abroad with a political, economic, and cultural picture of the country.

DW broadcast via shortwave and initially only in German. The first foreign languages were added in 1954. In 1992, DW expanded into television and, shortly thereafter, the internet.

"Of course the days of just shortwave were easier," says Deutsche Welle Director General Peter Limbourg. "But thanks to the internet, social media, and our network of partners, we now have the chance to reach significantly more people than we used to. We offer a mix of news, background, and think pieces, presented in a modern fashion and oriented around the interests of our diverse and often very young target audiences."

DW English radio programming for Africa now available mornings

As of Sunday, October 26, Deutsche Welle English radio programming for Africa will be broadcast in the mornings.

From Monday to Friday for an hour each at 4:00, 5:00 and 7:00 UTC, DW will provide news and information on the latest developments in Africa, as well as on important international and German issues.

"With the new programming schedule, DW is reacting to changes in media consumption behavior by many Africans, who tend to listen to radio in the mornings, but are increasingly turning on their TVs in the evenings," says DW Director of Programming Gerda Meuer. "With regard to multimedia coverage, this offers DW the opportunity to interlink its Africa radio programming closely with the future English flagship TV channel."

The broadcasts at 4:00, 5:00 and 7:00 UTC will allow the 25-minute radio magazine "AfricaLink" to react to events in East and West Africa, which are spread across four time zones. The popular education program "Learning by Ear" will be broadcast twice a week as part of "AfricaLink."

In addition to world news and Africa-related topics, there will be six special-interest and background radio magazines featuring issues from Germany and Europe to the environment, science and development.

The 30-minute radio magazine "Inside Europe" will more strongly reflect the interests of African listeners. On weekends, a one-hour version of "Inside Europe," along with the radio magazine "WorldLink," offer insights into what is happening in Germany, Europe and around the world. Both programs are extremely popular in Africa due to their lively reports, interviews and broad range of topics.

"DW has been broadcasting in Africa for more than 50 years, which has created a very special relationship with our listeners and users, characterized by trust and respect," says Gerda Meuer. "They know that we objectively explain, analyze and contextualize the latest developments from a German and European perspective."

Over 100 FM partner stations in English-speaking Africa rebroadcast DW's English programs. In crisis-ridden South Sudan, they number among the most popular international radio programs.

In South Sudan, around eight percent of the target audience listens to DW every week. In Zambia and Tanzania, that figure is five percent.

Deutsche Welle offers online news and analysis from and about Africa at www.dw.de/africa. Online content for Africa in English is set to be further expanded with a special focus on mobile services, which are becoming ever more popular in Africa.

International broadcasters protest against intentional jamming from Ethiopia

International broadcasters protest against intentional jamming from Ethiopia Due to intentional jamming from Ethiopia the reception of TV programs by Deutsche Welle and numerous other international broadcasters is currently severely impacted in large parts of the Arab world.

BBC, France 24 and Voice of America are also among the broadcasters affected by the jamming.

The satellite provider Arabsat has identified Ethiopia as the source of the strong jamming signals on all its three satellites. Ethiopian authorities have not responded to the incident yet.

Peter Limbourg, director general of Deutsche Welle: "This is a gross violation of the internationally recognized right of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Deutsche Welle, BBC, France 24 and Voice of America strongly condemn this action against the free flow of impartial information. We urge the Ethiopian authorities to immediately cease the jamming."

While Deutsche Welle's short wave programs have been repeatedly target of jamming from Ethiopia, the current incident appears not to be aimed at specific broadcasters or programs. The jamming of satellite programs constitutes a violation of international agreements, but the practice is nevertheless on the rise. The most recent incidents occurred in 2011 and 2012 via Iran.

In the Arab world Deutsche Welle is available through its TV channel "DW Arabia." Selected radio programs in Arabic are available via partner stations throughout the region.

Broadcasting Board welcomes Deutsche Welle structural reforms

At a meeting in Bonn on November 22, the Broadcasting Board has unanimously welcomed the reform plans Deutsche Welle Director General Peter Limbourg outlined, which aim to make DW a leading global information provider.

Chairman of the Broadcasting Board Valentin Schmidt said: "Only seven weeks after taking office, the director general has presented a convincing concept, which will allow Deutsche Welle to continue to successfully carry out its chartered task in the future. He has further developed the course adopted by his predecessor Erik Bettermann and has set new priorities for DW's strategy. The Broadcasting Board unanimously supports the restructuring measures envisaged by Peter Limbourg. We particularly welcome the plan to pool existing resources and to enhance the broadcaster's current affairs expertise. This will enduringly strengthen Deutsche Welle's international competitiveness."

The new Broadcasting Board will continue to accompany DW reform process after its constitution. The supervisory body will be reconstituted after all the representatives from social groups and organizations, as well as representatives from the Bundestag, the federal government and the Bundesrat have been appointed for a new five-year term.

Increased relevance to global decision makers

At the meeting of the Broadcasting Board, Director General Limbourg announced that in the future DW will strive to be a global information provider from Germany. At the same time, DW's journalistic profile will be further strengthened. He said: "Through more dialogue and interactivity, DW aims to increase the relevance of its content to global decision makers and political opinion leaders by 2017. For that segment of the target group in particular, we plan to extend DW's reach on all its platforms, thereby raising the number of regular DW users from the current 101 million to 150 million. In the coming four years, DW aims to position itself as one of the top international broadcasters."

By early February 2014, DW will set regional priorities following clear criteria and will optimize its TV, Internet and radio content accordingly. In this process, DW will strive to consolidate and streamline its work.

English as "flagship" in programming

Since English is the lingua franca of global decision makers, English-language content will be extended and will play a central role as the 'flagship' of all DW offerings. For example, English TV programming is set to significantly expand its news coverage. DW will continue to offer German-language television and online content as well. German-language TV news coverage will also be extended and more clearly structured. Cooperation on news programs with German national broadcasters ARD and ZDF will be strengthened in the coming years. The successful multimedia content available for German learners will be further developed and linked more closely to other content on dw.de.

In order to foster dialogue and interaction with users, DW will create new formats and intensify its connection to bloggers and other online opinion leaders.

Basis for strategy from 2014 to 2017

Following the merger of its two programming departments, DW will continue to streamline its structures and reorganize editorial work in Bonn and Berlin, Limbourg said.

The concept Director General Peter Limbourg has outlined will serve as the basis for DW's strategic plan from 2014 to 2017. The draft will be presented to the German federal government and the German Bundestag in spring 2014. Input from DW's internal "Competition of Ideas" and recommendations from staff representatives will be integrated into the draft.
