EC seeks support from Ham radio operators

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought support from Ham radio operators, who were applauded for their service during the earthquake in Nepal, in the upcoming Assembly elections in Bengal.

Amateur operators with high frequency radios will provide communications support to EC officials in areas with negligible or zero mobile telephone network. In a letter to Ambarish Nag Biswas, secretary of West Bengal Radio Club (Amateur), the poll panel has asked for support during the six-phase polls in Bengal, starting from April 4.

Radio’s Three Digital Radio Standards

North Korean regime intensifies signal jamming against foreign radio broadcasts

North Korea has been from the beginning of March continually signal jamming radio broadcasts on the shortwave frequency used by the South Korean non-profit broadcaster Unification Media Group (UMG). Given the present situation, in which North Korean residents might be influenced by outside information condemning the regime and explaining the purpose of the sanctions imposed by the United Nations, the regime has showed the will to block sources of outside information that might cause unrest.

The shortwave frequency in question--7515 kHz, in the 41 meter band--has been actively jammed, making it extremely difficult for North Korean listeners to tune in.

Government to facilitate growth of Community Radio Sector in the country

Government to facilitate growth of Community Radio Sector in the country: Shri Arun Jaitley

I and B Minister inaugurates 6th National Community Radio Sammelan

Shri Arun Jaitley Minister for Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information and Broadcasting said that Radio as a medium of communication had made a comeback in view of the growing popularity of FM transmission and its reach. Community Radio as a variant of the medium had provided a value addition to the narrative by addressing the information needs regionally, addressing diverse status and issues and capturing the language, culture and social practices.  Shri Arun Jaitley stated this while delivering his address at the inaugural session of the 6th National Community Radio Sammelan here today.

Elaborating further, the Minister said the scope for expansion in the sector was vast in view of the communication needs at the regional level. It had the power to connect with people by exchanging experiences and content of programs. As a consequence, this provided the bandwidth for effective programming to grow on a sustainable basis. Shri Jaitley said that the government would facilitate the medium through policies which would spur the growth in the total number of operational community radio stations in the future. The Minister lauded the efforts of the stations which focussed on sustained campaigns on critical issues related to health and education. This had led to people imbibing the spirit of the messages.

Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore said that Community Radio was an important communication medium that empowered local people and had a connect with them. It could play an important role in dissemination of information about government schemes and policies to the common man in their local language, which in many cases has not reached them through conventional mediums of communication such as Television and FM Radio.

Elaborating further, Col. Rathore said that Community Radio could help in disseminating benefits of various government initiatives such as Mudra Yojna, Fasal Bima Yojna, and Soil Health Card to the local people. He said Community Radio should inspire people by informing them about the local achievements and endeavours of people who were one amongst them. He also encouraged participation of all the concerned stakeholders to take the Community Radio Movement in the country further ahead.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Sunil Arora, Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that Community Radio empowered people who generally found no voice in traditional media. He said that Community Radio provided empowering experiences to farmers, local fishermen, folk artists who shared their stories in programmes conducted by the community radio stations. He said that Ministry of I&B had opened a Community Radio facilitation Centre at Shastri Bhawan to streamline approval process for the CR stations. Elaborating further he mentioned that Ministry had given permissions to 439 CR stations out of which 191are already in operation. He also said that the setting of agenda for this year National Sammelan was a participative process wherein feedback from CR stations across the country was solicited.

Shri Arun Jaitley Minister for Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information & Broadcasting and Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore also felicitated the winners of the 5th National Community Radio Awards. The award for the most creative/Innovative Programme content was presented to 'Radio Benziger' from Kerala for their program 'Sukrutham'. The other categories included Awards for Program with Best Theme, Community Engagement, and Promoting local culture. They also released the Community Radio Compendium and Community Radio Map which illustrated Community Radio Stations across the nation.

New utility application for Airspy: Spectrum Spy

A new utility app is available for download with the standard SDR# package. It allows the visualization of larger frequency spans by exploiting Airspy's fast frequency tuning capability. The scanning speed is comparable to real spectrum analyzers (may be faster even!) The project is still in a PoC state, but the basic functionality provided is fully operational.

The downloads are available at sdr# website :

DRM General Assembly 2016 at Fraunhofer IIS, April 5-7th

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) General Assembly to be held at Fraunhofer IIS Headquarters in Germany , April 5-7th 2016

The 2016 General Assembly of the DRM Consortium is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th of April and is being hosted by Fraunhofer IIS at their headquarters in Erlangen, near Nuremberg (Germany).  The theme for this year's event is "Digital Radio Mondiale – Smart Radio for Everyone".

During three days the DRM members and invited guests to both the General Assembly and the European Workshop (scheduled for April 7th) will have a chance to get together, review and exchange exclusive information on DRM in one of the most innovative research institutes in the world.  During the General Assembly the members and guests will review the DRM outstanding activities and achievements of the past year.

"This is also the time to address all the remaining challenges and participate in shaping the strategy of the next year", says Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairman. This past year witnessed some visible progress and impact on receiver developments with the launch of the first made in India receiver and the first DRM receiver in an Indian car. Receivers remain at the top of our priorities and part for the big push to see digital radio take hold in key markets across the world."

The General Assembly will take place on April 5th for half day and on April 6th full day. On the 6th afternoon, the GA will overlap with the start of the first DRM European Workshop.  The European workshop is being organised for the first time by the DRM German Platform. Its Chairman, Joachim Lehnert, explains what drove the members to take this initiative: "The event will focus on the radio receiver and car industry and the need for the provision of multi-standard radios in Europe which can and should include DRM reception in the AM and in the VHF bands."

To register for the General Assembly events on both days please contact projectoffice@drm.org.

About DRM

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) is the universal, openly standardised digital broadcasting system for all broadcasting frequencies.

The DRM standard comprises of two major configurations: 'DRM30′ intended for broadcasts on short, medium and long wave up to 30 MHz and providing large coverage areas and low power consumption. The configuration for the VHF bands above 30 MHz is called 'DRM+', tailored for local and regional coverage with broadcaster-controlled transmissions.

All DRM configurations share the same audio coding, data and multimedia services, service linking, multiplexing and signalling schemes.

DRM provides high quality sound combined with a wealth of enhanced features: Surround Sound, Journaline text information, Slideshow, EPG, and data services.
