Radyo Pilipinas World Service is back to serve Pinoys abroad thru the shortwave radio !

Radyo Pilipinas World Service is back to serve Pinoys abroad thru the shortwave radio !

Radyo Pilipinas World Service (RPWS) comes back stronger and louder with its services that never ceased online and now finally back on the shortwave radio from its eight months silence.
RPWS the overseas broadcast radio station of the Presidential Broadcast Service (PBS) – Bureau of Broadcast Services (PBS-BBS), under the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) of the Republic of the Philippines has seized operation on the shortwave radio last March 19, 2025 while continuing its online services.

This ensued from United States (US) President Donald Trump's order last March 2025 to stop all United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) broadcast services.

Trump's order has stripped back USAGM's federal funds and placed some of its staff on leave including USAGM Philippines which houses the Voice of America (VOA) facilities responsible for airing RPWS programs through the shortwave radio reaching Filipinos across the world.

RPWS, through the leadership of its Station Manager Mr. Remigio Sampang maintained the overseas broadcast, relentlessly servicing Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Seafarers online despite shortwave radio limitations and challenges.

With the confirmation from USAGM Philippines, RPWS will resume its broadcast operations over the shortwave radio on December 1, 2025.

The revival of its shortwave radio functionality and the expansion to online radio proved RPWS prevailed against all odds.

Afterall, the radio is not dying but it is evolving and adapting to the modern times. Radyo Pilipinas World Service (RPWS) is an embodiment of this claim.

Afghanistan: Radio For Peace International and Nothing2Hide launch program to protect journalists and women amid growing restrictions

Afghanistan: Radio For Peace International and Nothing2Hide launch program to protect journalists and women amid growing restrictions

In the face of severe restrictions on journalists and women in Afghanistan, Radio For Peace International (RFPI) and Nothing2Hide are joining forces to provide critical support. Together, they are launching an innovative digital safety training program, broadcast in Farsi and Pashto, and designed in collaboration with Afghan journalists.

A direct response to needs on the ground

After launching programs in 2023 focused on psychological support for Afghan women  and promoting their voices through "Parole de femmes afghanes", RFPI is now partnering with  cybersecurity experts Nothing2Hide. Their goal: to equip journalists, especially  women, with the essential tools to secure their communications and continue to inform in  a context of censorship and surveillance.

Radio, a vital space in danger

With more than 170 radio stations still active in Afghanistan, according to the Afghan Journalists Association  , the threat of closure looms. Local authorities are targeting FM radio stations in the  Khost region in particular. For Sylvain Clament, president of RFPI:  " We want to allow journalists to continue their work despite the obstacles, by  strengthening their digital security and offering them alternative means, such as shortwave broadcasting

Training to protect women and defend their freedom

Afghan women, including journalists, are exposed to alarming risks:  online stalking, harassment and violence. As Jamila Karimi, Afghan journalist and  Middle East and Asia Director for RFPI, points out:  " In a country where even a simple digital trace can lead to retaliation,  online communication remains one of the last spaces of freedom for women and girls. We  must protect them and allow them to express themselves. "

A program widely distributed and accessible to all

Since October 31, RFPI and Nothing2Hide have been broadcasting two weekly 15-  minute episodes, every Thursday and Friday (1430-1500 UTC), from the Issoudun site in France on the  17860 Khz frequency.  According to Grégoire Pouget, director of Nothing2Hide: " Training directly on site in Afghanistan was a crucial first step. Today, we  are moving to a mass broadcast to reach as many people as possible. "

The programme will run for seven weeks, comprising 14 episodes, and will be accessible via:
• Social media (Facebook, YouTube)
• Major podcast platforms.
Together, RFPI and Nothing2Hide demonstrate that it is still possible to defend freedom and  information, even in the most hostile environments.

"Sudan Now" – DW Arabic launches new radio program for Sudan

"Sudan Now" – DW Arabic launches new radio program for Sudan

DW is now broadcasting a 30-minute daily Arabic-language radio program entitled "Sudan Now" on shortwave, Hotbird and SES-5 satellites and via the DW Arabic website.

As an unbiased radio program, "Sudan Now" will provide listeners in the target region with unbiased coverage of current issues in the region and will promote political, social and cultural dialogue through interviews, talk shows and reports.

Given the lack of independent information sources in Sudan and the limited ability of established media to broadcast due to internet outages and ongoing fighting, "Sudan Now" was specifically designed to be broadcast on shortwave and via the Hotbird- and SES-5 satellites. The satellite broadcast enables listeners in the target region to receive the program via their TV sets.

DW Managing Director Programming Dr. Nadja Scholz: "The conflict in Sudan is ongoing and has far-reaching effects on the entire region. It is absolutely necessary to provide the people there with a dedicated program that enables them to access independent, current and in-depth information. With shortwave radio, we further increase our ability to reach as many people as possible."

Manuela Kasper-Claridge, DW editor-in-chief, said: "The humanitarian situation in Sudan remains catastrophic. There is a lack of everything – including free, independent information. This Arabic-language radio program is therefore urgently needed."

The program broadcast will begin on Monday, June 26, 2023. It will air daily from Monday to Friday at 2:30 pm (local time, GMT+2) for a duration of thirty minutes. A repeat of the radio program will air daily at 8:30 pm.
