Dear friends of RRI, you are once again invited to a prize winning contest: "The 3rd RadiRo International Radio Orchestras Festival". It is dedicated to a unique musical event in Europe, bringing to the Radio Concert Hall stage 6 major orchestras and world famous soloists and conductors.

Radio Romania is the organizer of the 3rd  International Radio Orchestra Festival between 23 September and 1 October, the only musical event cultivating the skill and excellence of radio symphony orchestras around the world every 2 years, since 2012.

The 9-day festival will bring together on the Radio Concert Hall stage 5 famous classical music ensembles from around Europe, and, as a first for Bucharest, a Chinese ensemble, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. The latter opens the festival on September 23rd with a concert headlined by Chinese pianist Zuo Zhang and Romanian violinist Gabriel Croitoru, playing the famous Guarneri de Gesu violin that used to belong to the great Romanian musician George Enescu.

The festival features the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, which performs every year at the Nobel Peace Prize awarding ceremony. One other notable presence is the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, the oldest radio orchestra in Germany, under the baton of Kristjan Järvi, who is also the honorary director of RadiRo 2016.

The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra brings to the festival famous violinist Gidon Kremer. The BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Barry Wordsworth, will close the festival on October 1st. The Romanian National Radio Orchestra will hold two concerts at the RadiRo Festival, on September 26th and 30th, featuring conductors Cristian Macelaru and Leo Hussain, alongside violin soloist Alexandru Tomescu and cellist Razvan Suma, with the participation of the Radio Academic Choir and the Radio Children's Choir.

You are invited to follow RRI broadcasts, our website, www.rri.ro, and our Facebook ,Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn profiles, and to answer correctly, in writing, a few questions, and you may be a winner. The closing date is October 1st, 2016 mailing date.

The prizes and honorary mentions consist of Romanian and international classical music CDs signed by famous Romanian artists, as well as various cultural items. The contest is organized jointly with the Nicolae Tonitza Fine Art High School of Bucharest, Casa Radio Publishing House, and Electrecord label.

And here are the questions:

Digital Radio Mondiale in co-operation with Radio Romania, held a comprehensive workshop in Bucharest

Digital Radio Mondiale in co-operation with Radio Romania, held a comprehensive workshop in Bucharest on the 22nd September.

The Romanian Regulator (Ancom), the Network Operator (Radiocom) and other stakeholders were present at the event and found the information provided very useful for the discussions and the radio digitisation plans in the country. As Romania is geographically and ethnically very diverse, it has been recognised that DRM could, through its specific technical setup, cover the entire territory, without any gaps, thus reaching all its citizens in cities as well as in the large and rural areas with more and exciting programmes, with best sound quality.

The seminar was well attended and the presentations were punctuated by interesting discussions. Radio Romania also presented their wide activities. Radio Romania International is broadcasting in DRM in several languages (English, French, Russian , Chinese and Italian).

Radio Romania International celebrates World Radio Day 2013

On February 13th, 2013 RRI will celebrate World Radio Day for the first time. RRI would like you to join for this celebration and tell in less than 60 seconds, what radio means to you. You can send your messages as e-mail audio attachments, at regular addresses, or you can just upload your messages on the website created specially for this event  :   www.wrd13.com

Obviously, we could talk about radio for hours, but now we would just like you to send a short and creative message, just like radio messages should be, in which you can tell us why radio is such an important means of information to you.

On February 13th you will hear some of the messages sent by our listeners, in RRI's programs, and why not, in programs broadcast by other radio stations, which will use your messages in their own shows.

Just months ahead of the celebration of its 85th anniversary, Radio Romania is actively involved in the events celebrating World Radio Day through all its stations, including RRI. February 13 is the day proclaimed by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate Radio as a medium; to improve international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information and freedom of
expression over the airwaves.

UNESCO encourages all countries to celebrate World Radio Day by planning activities in partnership with regional, national and international broadcasters, non-governmental organizations, the media and the public. The World Radio Day International Committee is constituted by agreement among the most representative broadcasting organizations. Its purpose is to internationally promote the celebration of World Radio Day. The first edition will be held February the 13th 2013.

This Committee invites all public, private, online and community Radio organizations as well as Radio professionals and listeners worldwide to participate in a global campaign and join voices to tell the world why Radio continues to be the greatest media!

The World Radio Day International Committee web platform organizes sound item exchanges in order to promote this medium (1 minute maximum). You are invited to produce and send your posts, whatever your link may be with the Radio world (public Radio, private Radio, community Radio, independent producer, listener etc).

Vlad Turcanu: “The concept of public institution in the Republic of Moldova failed in the early 2000s, after having gained significant shape in the 90s. We had to limit ourselves to what private stations offered. These had poorly structured programs, without the editorial effort to satisfy the needs of listeners with a rich culture and a thirst for knowledge. I hope that bringing the Romanian public radio network to Chisinau will reconfigure the market and will boost its development.”

Radio Chisinau broadcasts on number of frequencies covering most of Moldova. In Chisinau, the station can be heard on the FM band on 89.6 MHz, as well as online. A series of cultural events were held to celebrate the launch of Radio Chisinau. These included a special concert in the city’s Central Square, with a number of Romanian and Moldovan performers.

This project is part of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation’s strategy to offer programming to listeners in the Republic of Moldova. Radio Romania hopes that expanding the network for Romanian-speaking listeners across the Prut River, on the airwaves or online, will provide a direct, fair, balanced and impartial source of information, while promoting Romanian cultural, artistic and linguistic values.

Radio Romania International Contest

"Multicultural Timisoara"
Dear friends, you are once again invited to take part in a prize winning contest entitled "Multicultural Timisoara", organized by Radio Romania International and focused on a true multicultural and multiethnic melting pot, Timis county, in Western Romania, with emphasis on the city of Timisoara. We are trying to pique your curiosity regarding Timisoara, the Timis county capital, in the historical province of Banat, with at least two historical data: in November 1884, Timisoara became the first European city with public electric lighting, and in December 1989 the anti-communist revolution in Romania started in Timisoara.
You are invited to listen to RRI shows, to visit our site at www.rri.ro and our profiles on Facebook, Twitter and Flick, to provide correct answers in writing to a few questions, and you can win. The contest will close on March 31st 2011, post date.
We will offer two Grand Prizes - two seven-night stays for one, full boarding, at the Varias Guesthouse, in the village of the same name, in the first half of June 2011.
The contest is sponsored by S.C. VARIMAX S.A., based in Varias, Timis county.
As usual, you will have to cover travel and visa fees, if necessary. Transport and accommodation in Romania are covered by RRI and the sponsors. For those who do not manage to win the Grand Prizes, we have many smaller prizes related to Timisoara and Timis county, offered by our partners and sponsors: the Timis County Council, Timisoara City Hall, the Romanian Orthodox Archbishopric of Timisoara, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, the "Banat" Philharmonics, the Museum of Banat, including the Timisoara Art Museum, the Fine Artists' Union, The Timis branch, the Timis County Center for Culture and the Arts.
First documented in the 13th century, Timisoara is home to over 300,000 inhabitants. Many other ethnic groups live alongside the majority Romanian population, making the city a cultural and religious crossroads. In Timisoara you can find large communities of ethnic Hungarians, Germans, Serbs, Roma, but also Bulgarians, Ukrianians, Jews and Slovakians. After the fall of communism, Timisoara also became a thriving business center, where communities of business people emerged, mostly Italians, Arabs and Turks.
Timisoara is a multicultural city, which has gathered many influences over the centuries, mostly from German, Hungarian and Serbian communities, but also from a Bulgarian, Italian and Greek source.
Aside from this ethnic and confessional diversity, we have to mention that Timisoara is one of Romania's economic engines, a higher education center with a long tradition, a city with an exceptional cultural life, but also a center of communications and transportation. Mostly German, Italian and US businesspeople have made investments in Timisoara. The German National Theater, the Hungarian National Theater and the Romanian Opera house share the same historical building. An important cultural landmark is the "Banat" Philharmonics. Another one is the Banat Museum, set up in 1872. It hosts the largest collection of archeological pieces in Banat. The institution has various branches, such as an Art Museum, an Ethnography Museum, the Banat Village Museum. From an architectural point of view, the city boasts a large heritage of historic buildings (according to some sources, as many as 14,500). The Baroque style of Viennese influence is prevailing. It earned Timisoara the name of "Little Vienna", but we can also find buildings in the Art Nouveau, secession, eclectic or Romanian styles. Timisoara has many green areas that mostly stretch along the navigable part of Bega River. For this reason, Timisoara has earned the moniker "city of parks and roses".
Timisoara is a "city of firsts" among cities that are now on Romanian soil: 1728 - the beginning of works to turn Bega River into a navigable canal; 1854 - the first telegraph service; 1855 - the first city in the Habsburg space to have public gas lighting; 1881 - the first telephone network; 1886 - the first ambulance service in Hungary and Romania; 1895 - the first street laid with asphalt; 1899 - the first electric tram in today's Romania, and many more.

And now, here are the questions:

- Which event occurred in December 1989 in Timisoara?

- Mention at least three ethnic minorities living in the city of Timisoara or Timis county

- How many other cities had public electric lighting before Timisoara and when was this type of lighting introduced in the city?

- Name at least 3 cultural landmarks in Timisoara.

Please, also specify what motivated you when deciding to take part in the contest, and, if you wish, mention the sources you have used in answering, other than our radio station, the RRI website or our Facebook and Twitter profiles. Please, send your answers to: Radio Romania International, 60-64 Gral Berthelot Street, sector 1, Bucharest, PO Box 111, code 010165, fax 00.40.21.319.05.62, e-mail: eng@rri.ro. Please send us your answers by 31 March 2011, post date. The winners will be announced in late April, allowing winners to make preparations for their trip to Timis County. Good luck!
