Radiocom has managed to fix the malfunction of one of the shortwave transmitters in Tiganesti. Radio Romania Intl's programs can be received again, including digitally, for some areas, in the DRM system, on the frequencies originally announced at the end of October 2024.

Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium and the Public Indonesian Broadcaster, RRI, to showcase DRM for local coverage

On the first day of the DRM Consortium's annual General Assembly held in Switzerland and hosted by Ampegon, it was announced that the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium will join the Indonesian public broadcaster RRI in the upcoming demonstration of DRM for local coverage in Batam, Indonesia, May 16th-18th. One of the existing local FM frequencies and transmitters will be upgraded to DRM mode to present some of the clear benefits of digital radio for local coverage: excellent audio, multimedia features including Journaline advanced text and images, good coverage and efficient energy use. In addition to international digital radio experts, participants include RRI experts, broadcast authorities, the industry and commercial broadcasters. They will be able to learn about the effectiveness and many features of DRM for local coverage in the environment of Batam island, situated in the west of Indonesia not far from Singapore.

RRI is following its successful demonstrations of DRM in the AM bands (medium wave) for large-area coverage in Bogor (2015) and in Bali (2016) with this new showcase and evaluation of DRM for local coverage. After a full-day update explaining the technology background and applications, the participants will have the opportunity to see and hear for themselves how DRM performs by boarding a specially equipped vehicle for an excursion around Batam. After that the participants will analyse the results and draw the conclusions for the next steps towards the roll-out of digital radio DRM in Indonesia.

RRI President, Mr M. Rohanudin, says that: "By looking closely at the performance of DRM for local coverage, we will have tested and learnt about DRM both in the AM and VHF frequencies; we will have thoroughly understood the standard which will be useful for the future digitisation of Indonesia."

DRM Chairman Ruxandra Obreja welcomes the great support offered by and thorough effort made by RRI with all its recent DRM trials. "DRM in the VHF bands including the FM band is the newest and most flexible solution for local radio coverage. We are happy to see how it delivers during this short Indonesian demonstration. Having been ITU endorsed not long ago, DRM for local coverage is already being heard in Pakistan and is being demonstrated in South Africa."

RRI specialists will work together with other colleagues from the DRM Consortium representing Fraunhofer IIS, GatesAir and RFmondial.

Digital Radio Mondiale Transmissions during ABU and CBU Conferences

Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) to be demonstrated simultaneously from two continents

This year's annual General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union will be hosted by the Indonesian public broadcaster, RRI, in Bali. DRM will feature not only in the meetings of the specialised committees but also concretely with a live medium wave transmission on 20-24 October from one of the RRI MW transmitter in Denpasar, Bali on 1206 KHz. The DRM broadcasts will feature special messages for the ABU participants, presentations on RRI, DRM the emergency warning functionality, music, as well as the Journaline service accompanying the audio, allowing listeners to look-up the latest news on demand, free-to-air, on their receiver screens and in multiple languages simultaneously. The DRM demo run by RRI is actively supported by GatesAir, Transradio, Fraunhofer IIs and RFmondial key members of the Consortium.

In parallel, Babcock International (member of the DRM Consortium) will transmit BBC World Service content in DRM short wave from Singapore on 11995 kHz (25 metre band) at 0500-0700 UTC or 1300-1500 local time.

After last year's DRM medium wave trial, north of Jakarta, this is another chance to enjoy the audio qualities of DRM, and, as Mr Frederik Ndolu, member of the RRI Supervisory Board said:" to show RRI's commitment in understanding what is the most efficient solution for getting the best programmes, in the best quality to all our listeners, wherever they are in our vast country."

Almost at the same time with the big gathering on the tropical island of Bali, the General Assembly of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (24-27 October) will convene in Havana, Cuba. It will mark a significant moment as the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium has announced it will be bringing the first live digital radio signal transmission to Cuba, the Caribbean region and parts of northern Latin America, and even as far north as Florida. The broadcast facilitated by Babcock International will come from the BBC via its Atlantic Relay station.

The DRM transmission will be in the 13 meter-band on 21720 kHz and will carry BBC World Service programmes in English. Additional multimedia features of DRM will also be demonstrated on radio receiver screens. The DRM broadcast will be on air from 1600-1800 UTC, 1200-1400 local time on Oct. 24 and 25.

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairman, feels that: "this is a great opportunity to introduce DRM to the Caribbean nations, to highlight some of its great benefits, like the emergency warning functionality, so much at the top of the agenda for the people in this region of the world."

RRI Contest “The 3rd RadiRo International Radio Orchestras Festival"

Dear friends of RRI, you are once again invited to a prize winning contest: "The 3rd RadiRo International Radio Orchestras Festival". It is dedicated to a unique musical event in Europe, bringing to the Radio Concert Hall stage 6 major orchestras and world famous soloists and conductors.

Radio Romania is the organizer of the 3rd  International Radio Orchestra Festival between 23 September and 1 October, the only musical event cultivating the skill and excellence of radio symphony orchestras around the world every 2 years, since 2012.

The 9-day festival will bring together on the Radio Concert Hall stage 5 famous classical music ensembles from around Europe, and, as a first for Bucharest, a Chinese ensemble, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. The latter opens the festival on September 23rd with a concert headlined by Chinese pianist Zuo Zhang and Romanian violinist Gabriel Croitoru, playing the famous Guarneri de Gesu violin that used to belong to the great Romanian musician George Enescu.

The festival features the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, which performs every year at the Nobel Peace Prize awarding ceremony. One other notable presence is the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, the oldest radio orchestra in Germany, under the baton of Kristjan Järvi, who is also the honorary director of RadiRo 2016.

The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra brings to the festival famous violinist Gidon Kremer. The BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Barry Wordsworth, will close the festival on October 1st. The Romanian National Radio Orchestra will hold two concerts at the RadiRo Festival, on September 26th and 30th, featuring conductors Cristian Macelaru and Leo Hussain, alongside violin soloist Alexandru Tomescu and cellist Razvan Suma, with the participation of the Radio Academic Choir and the Radio Children's Choir.

DRM Consortium welcomes Radio Republik Indonesia and signs co-operation agreement to Introduce DRM Digital Radio technology in Indonesia

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is delighted to welcome the Indonesian public broadcaster, Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) as a member of the Consortium. DRM and RRI have also signed a cooperation agreement to introduce the DRM technology in Indonesia starting in 2016.

The cooperation agreement was signed on behalf of RRI by Mrs R. Niken Widiastuti (President) and Mr M. Rohanudin (Technology and New Media Director), during the Asia Broadcasting Union's General Assembly meeting in Istanbul, Turkey.  The DRM Consortium was represented by the DRM Chairman, Mrs Ruxandra Obreja and Vice Chair, Mr Alexander Zink.

Mr Sunarya Ruslan, Head of Supervisory Board of Radio Republik Indonesia, said: "This is the first step for RRI to implement digital radio to serve the people of Indonesia."

Mr Rohanudin, added: "Digitisation of broadcasting is the first point of entry of new technologies into a country that consists of islands like Indonesia. Its presence must have the support of all parties to convince the Indonesian society of using this technology."

Radio Republik Indonesia signs cooperation agreement with DRM

RRI and the DRM Consortium signed a co-operation agreement that will see Indonesia test DRM transmissions across its vast archipeligo. Radio Republik Indonesia has been considering digital radio options for some time, and this latest announcement indicates that the country may add Digital Radio Mondiale transmission systems onto one or more of the national broadcaster's existing transmission installations.

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) and Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Conclude Successful DRM Digital Radio Trial and Workshop

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium and the Indonesian public broadcaster, Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), held a most comprehensive DRM30 digital radio trial and workshop in Jakarta, between 24th and 27th of March. This was one of the most comprehensive such events ever organised by the Consortium. The technical presentations on the first day were perfectly illustrated by the medium wave trial organised the next day at the Bogor station, about 60 kilometres south of Jakarta. The practical discussion of the excellent trial results on the 26th and the exploration of all DRM options and benefits completed the picture. On the last day of the workshop a discussion on the best way to introduce DRM countrywide and the possibilities of producing single or multi-standard receivers in the country completed a very successful event.

Mr Sunarya Ruslan, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of RRI Indonesia, hailed the DRM, RRI joint endeavour as most significant: "In our country of over 13,000 islands and about a quarter billion people we want to have radio broadcast services that are economical, easy, and mobile. They need to offer the same good quality to Indonesian citizens, whether they are in big or small cities, near or afar. Good sound, good programmes and available and affordable receivers for everyone is the aim now."

Mr Muhammad Rohanudin, Technology and New Media Director of RRI, was enthusiastic about the ease of adapting the existing analogue infrastructure (in Bogor) in record time in order to carry digital programmes in simulcast or pure digital. He declared the DRM sound quality "spectacular" and thought that "DRM can provide an option for RRI to reach every corner of the country, if all stakeholders work together."

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Consortium Chairman, was delighted to see that the event involved RRI but also  spectrum specialists, representatives of the government, of private broadcasters and receiver manufacturers. "The DRM trial and workshop", she said, "demonstrated that DRM offers the coverage, multi-platform content, excellent audio quality, extra features and cost savings that really fit with RRI's aspirations. DRM is made for Indonesia and Indonesia is made for DRM."

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium and the Indonesian public broadcaster, Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), are pleased to announce a DRM30 digital radio trial and workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia in the week of 24th of March. Indonesia is mostly coastal lowlands, larger islands and mountainous areas creating a challenging broadcasting landscape; RRI is exploring ways of overcoming these challenges to provide quality broadcasting services that can be received countrywide, with the efficient use of energy.

Mr Sunarya Ruslan, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of RRI Indonesia, says: "We are looking at the weaknesses that we experience currently in analogue radio with a desire to offer radio broadcast services that are economical, easy, and mobile, offering the same good quality to Indonesian citizens, whether they are in big or small cities, even in remote areas and whether they are farmers, fishermen, government officials or private citizens.  Mr Muhammad Rohanudin, Technology and New Media Director of RRI, adds: "RRI is currently reviewing the appropriate technologies to be used as a delivery medium. These technologies include DRM and we hope that the DRM trial in the Bogor area will provide us with options and a better understanding of digital radio broadcasting."  

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Consortium Chairman, is delighted to have the Consortium working so closely with RRI: "We believe that DRM will prove to be the full and cost-effective solution for Indonesia allowing it to provide quality broadcasting with extra services, to densely populated urban zones but also to remote areas. The DRM30 trial and workshop will be held from 24th - 27th March 2015 in Jakarta and Bogor. They will be supported by RRI and key Consortium members:Fraunhofer IIS, GatesAir, RFmondial and Transradio.  During the workshop attendees will be invited to observe the results of the DRM30 trial and to learn more about the full DRM standard.

RRI Contest: Targu Mures in History and In Our Times

Dear friends of Radio Romania International, you are invited once again to take part in a competition called "Targu Mures in History and In Our Times", with some exciting prizes on offer. The competition is dedicated to a very interesting area in the center of Romania, Mures County, and especially to its main city, Targu Mures.
Situated in the middle of the Transylvanian highlands, the county covers the Caliman Mountains (over 2,000 meters high), the Gurghiu Mountains, to the Tarnave Highland and the Transylvanian Plain. The Mures River basin and its tributaries cover the county's entire watershed. Targu Mures is not the only attraction, however. Sighisoara in particular stands out with its exceptional medieval fortress, which is still inhabited, as well as Reghin, which has been a major center for musical instrument making for centuries.
Targu Mures is notable as an important medical center, with its extraordinary achievements in cardiovascular medicine and urology. It is also a center of culture, with its libraries, museums, theaters, and with its special musical institutions. It is home to the National Theater of Targu Mures, the State Philharmonic of Targu Mures, as well as the 'Teleki-Bolyai' County Library, boasting one of the richest old book collections in Transylvania and the County Museum, with its many sections.
Targu Mures is a scholarly city, and has been famous as such since the Middle Ages, with its many schools and universities. In addition, it boasts many architecturally important buildings, such as the Administration Palace and the Palace of Culture, both in Secession style, the Orthodox Cathedral, the Flower Park, and the Targu Mures Zoo, to name just a few of the attractions in the city.

The county has numerous historical and architectural attractions, buildings dating back to the 14th to 18th centuries, bearing the influence of various European styles. The attractions include the Saschiz fortified medieval church, the medieval fortifications of Sighisoara (from the 14th century) and of Targu Mures (from the 17th century), and the Iernut fortified castle.
We should also mention the spa resort of Sovata, which dates back at least a century. There's plenty for nature lovers too, since the county boasts a number of beautiful nature reserves where rare species of plants can be found, such as Zau de Campie with its steppe peony, Poiana Narciselor, the ancient forest of Mociar, and the Gurghiu Tree Park.

Radio Romania International invites you to participate in a new prize-winning contest, this time dedicated to the "2011 George Enescu Festival". This music festival was inaugurated in 1958, in recognition of the appreciation George Enescu, the best known Romanian musician of all times, enjoyed worldwide.

The 20th edition of the festival will take place between September 1st and 25th, in Bucharest and other major cities across Romania. The festival includes almost 120 concerts and shows, grouped in various categories: "Great World Orchestras", "Chamber Music Recitals and Concerts", "Midnight Concerts", "World Music", "Opera and Ballet", "Music of the 21st Century", and, of course, "Enescu and His Contemporaries". As usual, this event attracts some of
the best names in symphonic music worldwide. You can get details on these events in our broadcasts, as well as on the website www.festivalenescu.ro, (the English version). The "George Enescu" International Competition has four sections: piano, violin, cello and composition.
The artistic director of the event is the world famous music manager Ioan Hollender, who was born in Timisoara, western Romania, who headed the Vienna Staatsoper, between 1992 and 2010.
In this contest, we grant prizes related to Enescu and Romanian symphonic music, but also to Romanian culture in general. The contest is sponsored by the "Monitorul Oficial" Publishers, with support from the "Casa Radio" Record and Publishing House.
A violin virtuoso known all over the world, composer, pianist, conductor and teacher, George Enescu was born 130 years ago, on 19 August 1881 in Liveni, Botosani county, in north eastern Romania. He is considered one of the greatest
composers of the first half of the 20th century. His work includes three completed symphonies, various other important pieces for voice and orchestra, chamber music, one opera ("'Oedip"), solo works and lieder. Such great names as Yehudi Menuhin and Dinu Lipatti are two of the musicians Enescu had a great influence on.
In order to qualify for one of our prizes you have to provide correct and complete answers, in writing, by 30 September 2011, posting date, to a few questions:
1. When and where was George Enescu born?
2. Name at least three compositions by Enescu.
3. Name at least three prestigious musicians attending this year's edition of the festival (soloists, conductors or orchestras).
4. Which edition of the "George Enescu" International Festival is running this year?

The English language program to Western Europe, airing at 17.00 hours UTC Summer time, is simultaneously transmitted in DRM system on 9,535 kHz and in analogue system on 11,735 kHz. RRI also brings you a 30-minute program in English, broadcast in the DRM system, transmitted to the UK by the British provider WRN Broadcast, between 17.00 and 17.30 hours UTC, on 7,350 kHz. Our English morning program airing at 05.30 UTC is simultaneously transmitted to Western Europe in the DRM system on 7,305 kHz and in analogue system on 9,655 kHz. Our English program airing at 20.30 UTC is simultaneously transmitted to Western Europe in DRM system on 9,765 kHz and in analogue system on 11.880 kHz. RRI also releases a weekly podcast in English, with an RSS feed; RRI's program, broadcast on Sunday at 17.00 hours UTC, will be available on the WRN servers and also on podcast directories, such as iTunes and Juicer. Also, as from October 2010, RRI's English broadcasts aired at 05.30 UTC (Summer time) and 06.30 UTC (Winter time) are available to listen on demand (via the Brittish provider WRN Broadcast), using a link on RRI's website.
On RRI's website, www.rri.ro you can listen to some of our broadcasts in English from the last 7 days. From Monday to Sunday you can listen, on demand, to our broadcast starting at 06.00 hours Romanian time. The programs become available as audio files 2 hours after broadcasting.

Radio Romania International Contest

"Multicultural Timisoara"
Dear friends, you are once again invited to take part in a prize winning contest entitled "Multicultural Timisoara", organized by Radio Romania International and focused on a true multicultural and multiethnic melting pot, Timis county, in Western Romania, with emphasis on the city of Timisoara. We are trying to pique your curiosity regarding Timisoara, the Timis county capital, in the historical province of Banat,with at least two historical data: in November 1884, Timisoara became the first European city with public electric lighting, and in December 1989 the anti-communist revolution in Romania started in Timisoara.
You are invited to listen to RRI shows, to visit our site at www.rri.ro and our profiles on Facebook, Twitter and Flick, to provide correct answers in writing to a few questions, and you can win. The contest will close on March 31st 2011, post date.
We will offer two Grand Prizes - two seven-night stays for one, full boarding, at the Varias Guesthouse, in the village of the same name, in the first half of June 2011.

First documented in the 13th century, Timisoara is home to over 300,000 inhabitants. Many other ethnic groups live alongside the majority Romanian population, making the city a cultural and religious crossroads. In Timisoara you can find large communities of ethnic Hungarians, Germans, Serbs, Roma, but also Bulgarians, Ukrianians, Jews and Slovakians. After the fall of communism, Timisoara also became a thriving business center, where communities of business people emerged, mostly Italians, Arabs and Turks.
Timisoara is a multicultural city, which has gathered many influences over the centuries, mostly from German, Hungarian and Serbian communities, but also from a Bulgarian, Italian and Greek source.
Aside from this ethnic and confessional diversity, we have to mention that Timisoara is one of Romania's economic engines, a higher education center with a long tradition, a city with an exceptional cultural life, but also a center of communications and transportation. Mostly German, Italian and US businesspeople have made investments in Timisoara. The German National Theater, the Hungarian National Theater and the Romanian Opera house share the same historical building. An important cultural landmark is the "Banat" Philharmonics. Another one is the Banat Museum, set up in 1872. It hosts the largest collection of archeological pieces in Banat. The institution has various branches, such as an Art Museum, an Ethnography Museum, the Banat Village Museum. From an architectural point of view, the city boasts a large heritage of historic buildings (according to some sources, as many as 14,500). The Baroque style of Viennese influence is prevailing. It earned Timisoara the name of "Little Vienna", but we can also find buildings in the Art Nouveau, secession, eclectic or Romanian styles. Timisoara has many green areas that mostly stretch along the navigable part of Bega River. For this reason, Timisoara has earned the moniker "city of parks and roses".
Timisoara is a "city of firsts" among cities that are now on Romanian soil: 1728 - the beginning of works to turn Bega River into a navigable canal; 1854 - the first telegraph service; 1855 - the first city in the Habsburg space to have public gas lighting; 1881 - the first telephone network; 1886 - the first ambulance service in Hungary and Romania; 1895 - the first street laid with asphalt; 1899 - the first electric tram in today's Romania, and many more.
