Digital Radio Mondiale Prepares Pre IBC Virtual Event and In Person Events at IBC 2026

The Digital Radio Mondiale DRM Consortium (www.drm.org) is ready to start its IBC 2026 series of events with a dedicated virtual pre‑IBC event on 8 September at 1200 CEST, giving participants worldwide the opportunity to receive the latest updates from members of the Consortium on the Digital Radio Mondiale standard, ahead of the industry’s flagship gathering in Amsterdam.

The pre‑IBC session of 90 minutes will offer an in‑depth, first‑hand look at new developments, deployments and innovation announcements across all regions. 

Following the virtual event on the 8th, the Consortium will host two in‑person DRM events during IBC 2026, in partnership with Fraunhofer IIS and Nautel:

 

  • 12 September 1600 –1730 CEST – Fraunhofer IIS (Booth 8.B80)
    Attendees are invited to see directly a few new innovations and network with digital radio specialists and hear the latest from DRM and Fraunhofer experts IIS.
     
  • 13 September 1530–1700 CEST – Nautel (Booth 8.B73)

DRM solutions and global rollouts will feature at the Nautel Booth the next day. DRM will be part of the panel presenting at the dedicated digital radio session.

 
Across all events, participants will have the opportunity to meet and hear from DRM specialists, explore new receiver solutions, many multi-standard, and connect with companies advancing the global, efficient, allfrequency DRM digital radio standard.

We will also share details about ground-breaking projects using the versatile features of the DRM global standard like: e-Learning and Emergency Warning Functionality (EWF).

According to DRM Consortium Chairman Ruxandra Obreja: “Digital radio is making progress and is not being pushed aside by G6, Ai or other on demand platforms. DRM is the proof as this year we have registered many exciting DRM developments for DRM in parts of the world like China, Indonesia etc. It’s important for us to share this progress with everyone interested, whether they join us virtually or in person at IBC in Amsterdam. There is so much our DRM members can share and these events give everyone the unique opportunity to exchange opinions, give feedback and influence the future of digital radio.”

DRM General Assembly Welcomes Launch of the DRM Handbook Update

The successful DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) General Assembly hosted together with RRI in Jakarta, Indonesia, welcomed the launch of the significantly enhanced DRM Handbook version 6. The DRM Handbook is a hands-on resource that explains the practical application of DRM on transmission and receiving site and its content possibilities. The update is more extensive than first envisaged and, besides the expected specification updates, and richer DRM trials and demonstrations list, version 6 shows improvements at a deeper level, too.

The main updates are around two important groups:

System Features

- More examples and improved description of the innovative DRM Multichannel transmission
- Examples for AMSS, providing service signalling for analogue AM services
- Description of the EWF Manager, the central component to integrate national alert systems with DRM

Emergency Warning Functionality

- Description of new revenue opportunities through Journaline via individual listener targeting, interactivity and audience engagement measurements

CML Micro, Chengdu Newglee Technology Co., Ltd. (“Newglee”), and Glovane Co., Ltd. today announced a joint initiative to develop a flexible, multi-standard digital radio receiver platform supporting both Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) and DAB+, in addition to traditional analogue AM/FM.

This collaboration follows Indonesia’s recent strategic decision to adopt both DRM and DAB+ digital radio standards in a complementary deployment model, rather than treating the technologies as competing alternatives.

A Complementary Approach to National Digital Radio Coverage

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 10,000 islands, faces unique broadcast infrastructure challenges, with a need to cover wide areas as well as dense urban environments. By leveraging DRM across medium wave and VHF (Bands II and III) spectrum, alongside DAB+ in the upper Band III, the country aims to deliver robust, nationwide digital radio coverage.

This hybrid approach enables:

Wide-area coverage using DRM’s long-range capabilities
High-quality regional broadcasting via DRM in VHF (Bands II and III) and DAB+
Efficient spectrum utilisation across diverse geographies

The Indonesian model demonstrates how combining standards can create a comprehensive and resilient digital radio ecosystem.

Joint Development of a Multi-Standard Receiver Platform

In response to this evolving market need, CML Micro, Newglee, and Glovane have collaborated to develop a unified receiver platform capable of supporting both DRM and DAB+ within a single device architecture.

The solution integrates:

Advanced DRM technology from CML Micro
Advanced DAB+ technology from Glovane
Complementary system integration and manufacturing expertise from Newglee

The resulting platform enables:

A world-first low-power operation suitable for portable and battery-powered devices

The African Union of Broadcasting has made recommendations for Digital Sound Broadcasting (DSB), which include the use of both DRM for wide-area coverage and DAB+ for dense urban deployment, where free spectrum may be limited. This reference receiver design opens the door to cost-effective receivers that support DSB in Africa, leveraging the strengths of both DRM and DAB+ to meet diverse use-case requirements.

CML Micro, a leading developer of mixed-signal, RF, and microwave semiconductors for global communications markets, is pleased to announce the launch of the CMX918, an advanced, ultra-low-power, multi-mode Software-Defined Radio (SDR) tuner designed to significantly extend battery life in portable, embedded, and always-on radio applications.

This latest addition to CML Micro's extensive portfolio enables manufacturers to develop next-generation radio devices with smaller footprints, extended tuning capabilities, and reduced power consumption without compromising RF performance. As a result, the CMX918 is particularly suited to battery-powered hand-held devices, portable receivers, remote sensors, automotive and maritime systems where power efficiency is critical. The CMX918 facilitates seamless in-circuit integration via standard SPI, I²C, and I²S interfaces.

In addition to supporting established analogue transmission methods such as AM, FM and SSB, and specialist data services like NAVDAT, the CMX918 architecture ensures compatibility with key digital broadcasting standards including Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM).

Measuring just 5 × 5 mm, the CMX918 provides broad frequency coverage from 150 kHz to 108 MHz, using a highly flexible, software-driven architecture designed for low-power, high-performance applications. The compact footprint and wide tuning range make the device ideally suited to advanced space-constrained designs requiring coverage across LF, MF, HF, and VHF bands while delivering excellent real-world RF performance.

The CMX918 utilises a low-IF architecture with an integrated low-phase-noise VCO to ensure robust real-world signal reception. Software-configurable AGC, selectable IF bandwidths, and standardised digital interfaces support seamless integration across a wide range of radio platforms, enabling the CMX918 to operate as either a stand-alone receiver or as part of a larger high-performance unit.

Key technical features include:

- High spurious-free dynamic range for superior signal integrity
- Integrated low-phase-noise VCO with fast lock time
- Support for AM, FM, DRM, SSB, and many data modulation schemes
- Compact 5 × 5 mm VQFN32 package, ideal for space-constrained designs

bands. The government published the national "Chinese DRM Standard in MF and HF Band" on July 29. As a result, officials aim to improve audio quality, emergency alerts, and nationwide coverage.

DRM on Air to celebrate 100 years of Radio in Hungary

On December 1st Hungary will celebrate the centenary of its regular radio broadcasting. There will be official events to mark the occasion, accompanied by a DRM transmission on the day.

Currently there are no digital radio services on air in Hungary. For one day only, in honour of the engineers and technicians who embraced the cause of radio broadcasting in the past century, a DRM programme will be aired. It will carry a test audio stream and a short Journaline text service to showcase the benefits of DRM digital radio. This demonstration will take place after four years after the last major DRM campaign in Hungary in 2021.

This time the transmission will be delivered in co-operation with Fraunhofer IIS, 4iG Műsorszóró Infrastruktúra Kft. (the Hungarian broadcasting company) and the DRM Consortium's Associate Member, SZOMEL Kft.

As this is a 100-year anniversary, the transmitted power will be 100 W on 26060 kHz (the frequency might be subject to change). Although this is a relatively small transmitter power, the signal could be received in countries surrounding Hungary, and even in some areas of Germany and the Netherlands, as it happened in 2021.

STARWAVES has launched the DRM-DAB+ dual-standard version of its popular SoftRadio App for Android. This unique solution enables full-featured reception of both digital radio standards in a single app – ideal for markets where DRM and DAB+ coexist, such as South Africa, Indonesia, or Australia, or for listeners in Europe who want access to both local DAB+ services and international DRM broadcasts like Radio Romania International.

Feature-complete firmware simplifies deployment and unlocks advanced services for digital radio receivers across the world

CML Micro Systems, a leading developer of mixed-signal, RF, and microwave semiconductors for global communications markets, announces a major feature expansion for its flagship DRM1000 broadcast receiver module. The full production firmware release now includes as standard, easy access to the Journaline® advanced text application data, developed in collaboration with Fraunhofer IIS. In addition to this feature enhancement, CML Micro and Fraunhofer IIS have agreed that the DRM1000 will include a license to use the unique IP that underpins the Journaline specification.

This upgrade makes the DRM1000 a turnkey, production-ready solution for consumer digital radio manufacturers; with key audio and multimedia decoding capabilities included. In addition, data access, and IP license provisions made ready out of the box, enable faster, more cost-effective deployment of digital radio receivers worldwide without impacting the overall cost for manufacturers.

The new DRM1000 firmware release has already gained traction with customers. Solar Grove Solutions in collaboration with Alongside Tech LLC has selected the DRM1000 as the heart of its N88 Portable Radio, manufactured in India for national and international markets. India represents the world's largest DRM broadcast deployment to date and the N88 will be available through a network of channel partners and distributors across the region.

The recent DRM news from China, Indonesia, Nigeria and so many other countries across the continents have increased the interest and number of questions we have received recently from a lot of you. Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium (www.drm.org) specialists will try to answer some of these, share updates and make important announcements during its impactful, in-person presence at IBC 2025 (ibc.org), Amsterdam, the Netherlands (12th-15th September).

As the DRM Chairman, together with colleagues present in Amsterdam, I would like to invite you to Hall 8, RAI, over three days (12th, 13th and 14th September) to get and share your news during three events. These will focus on recent announcement (like digital radio decisions announced in China) receivers (latest updated versions and a new DRM-DAB app), additional services, and benefits of the standard and its distribution on all frequency bands including VHF band III.

On September 12th, the DRM Consortium will look at the latest on receivers and receiver solutions in a session hosted at the Starwaves (receivers) booth (1600-1730), part of the German Pavilion.

The next day,  September 13th, Fraunhofer IIS invites all those interested in digital radio to stop and join them at 1600-1730 to get the latest developments, like the R8 release of the DRM ContentServer technology and potentially an important industry cooperation project on the receiver side.

In the afternoon of Sunday 14th, DRM will recap all its new announcements at the Nautel booth event.

I think that at IBC we will illustrate very concretely how DRM can enable the terrestrial, one-for-all broadcast of rich content in very good audio quality. This excellent audio in all frequency bands is also accompanied by versatile multimedia. DRM is more than good audio as it can also save lives through its emergency warnings (EWF) and deliver e-learning to everyone even in the furthest corners of a country or continent. In an unstable world DRM responds to the needs of now as it is robust, open to all, saves energy and spectrum and ensures full-country coverage.

Unrar both files to the root folder of a USB memory stick (NOT external hard disk!) and install. For this you switch the radio on and wait until it is in normal operation. Then you plugin your memory stick and wait until the radio turns off, then unplug USB stick and then switch on the radio. Press the INFO button and verify the new release version (should show 539991).

BritAsia Radio to start regular DRM transmission for India from 2nd Nov

BritAsia Radio based in Birmingham, UK will start a regular one hour DRM transmission to India at 1400-1500 UTC on 21575 kHz on Saturdays from Woofferton with effect from 2nd November '24.

BritAsia Radio had started testing in DRM mode via Woofferton on 18th Oct '24, transmissions were noted Wed-Fri 1400-1500 UTC on 21575 kHz, several DRM enthusiasts from South Asia , Japan & China logged their broadcast being identified as "BritAsia pop up DRM service for India".

Revised schedule of "Voice of China" DRM test tranmission

"Voice of China"(CNR 1), 6030(Beijing), 7360(Qiqihar), 9420(Qiqihar), 9870(Qiqihar), 11695(Dongfang) kHz frequencies will be no longer used from June 1, 2024. After 1st June, 2024. 

3 irregular new frequencies 6180(Beijing 30kW 0deg), 15760(Qiqihar 30kW 225deg), 21530(Dongfang 30kW 341deg)kHz will be added.

The whole test schedule will be as follows. Power all 30kW.
