Radio Canada's Sackville, N.B. transmitters will be sold

After decades of service, the transmission towers outside of Sackville, N.B are no longer broadcasting Radio Canada International to the world.

Martin Marcotte, director of CBC Transmission, said he's now looking to sell the New Brunswick towers and land. He said he's focussing on selling the site to other shortwave broadcasters or wind farm companies.

“My Cultural Bucharest – from Radio Orchestras to Contemporary Art”

Dear friends, we invite you to participate in a prize-winning contest, entitled "My Cultural Bucharest-from Radio Orchestras to Contemporary Art", organized by Radio Romania International jointly with Radio Romania "Music". The contest is devoted to Bucharest, a cultural city of European importance and is focused on symphonic music and contemporary art.

The 1st edition of the International Radio Orchestras Festival is due to take place in Bucharest, between September the 23rd and 29th 2012. The festival is designed to bring together the most important symphony orchestras of leading radio broadcasters, in the Romanian capital city, in the years when Romania does not host the "George Enescu" International Festival and Contest.

The festival is held under the artistic guidance of pianist and conductor Christian Zacharias and will present to the public at large world-famous orchestras and soloists, on the stages of two of the main concert halls in Bucharest: the Palace Hall and the Radio Hall.

Performing will be: the National Radio Orchestra, the Radio Chamber Orchestra, the "Voces" Quartet

(Romania), the RAI Turin Orchestra, the Radio France Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, together with soprano Ruxandra Donose, violinist Alexandru Tomescu, conductor Juraj Valcuha, pianist and conductor Myungwhun Chung, cellist Jian Wang, conductor Horia Andreesu, violinist Maxim Vengherov, conductor Neemi Järvi, pianist Dan Grigore, etc.

Between May the 25th and July the 22nd, Bucharest will also host the 5th Contemporary Art Biennial Exhibition, BB5, coordinated by Anne Barlow (Great Britain/ the US). No less than 20 international artists from each continent have already announced their participation.

The previous editions of the Biennial were held in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

BB5 is meant to encourage and enhance the artists' creativity, to grant wider access to culture, to promote art, culture and intercultural dialogue, to offer the public the chance to get thorough knowledge of the history and cultural heritage of peoples from Europe and outside it. The exhibition will be held in unconventional places (including an old textile factory) as well as in public spaces in Bucharest (among which the Free Press House).

You stand a high chance to be among the winners. The contest comes to an end on July the 31st 2012, the post date.

The Grand Prize is a 7 night stay for two, in Bucharest, FB, between September the 23rd and 30th. The winners will find accommodation in the "Hotel Royal" and will also have the opportunity to go to all festival concerts hosted by the Palace Hall. Radio Nord Revival 2012

Radio Nord Revival is now started with broadcasts locally over Stockholm with 100 watts on 102.9 MHz. Feel free to tell us how the reception is.

Radio Nord Revival will be on the air one last time to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the closure of Radio Nord on June 30th, 1962. Our license runs for two weeks from June 25 and the following frequencies will be used:

- MW 603 kHz (the original Radio Nord channel) with a maximum of 2,5 kW of power from Sala.

- SW 5895 and 6065kHz with 10 kW of power from Sala, one frequency at a time.

- FM 102.7 MHz with a maximum of 100 W from Södermalm, Stockholm.

NHK Radio Japan to be available on AIR FM channels

As per a response for my report to Radio Japan NHK on their relays via All India Radio they are planning to commence daily FM relays in India in coming October, 2012.

The relay transmissions will be carried by All India Radio's "FM Rainbow" network stations. Sunday, October 28 will be the first day of this FM relays.

Prior to this, All India Radio FM Rainbow Hyderabad will commence TEST transmissions on the daily basis starting from Sunday, July 1. Listeners in Hyderabad and its suburbs can hear Radio Japan every night at 2130 Indian Standard Time, or 1600 UTC on 101.9 MHz, duration of this transmission is for 30 minutes of daily programs.

Hyderabad will be followed by Jaipur, Mumbai, and some other major cities across India. Radio Japan will try to increase the number of the stations by Oct. 28.

Note: Radio Japan is already heard daily via All India Radio FM Rainbow on 101,9 MHz at 1600-1630 UTC although they saay that it will start in July.

Radio Japan bengali service is already available in Bangladesh on FM channels.

Deutsche Welle to award comprehensive material recycling project

Deutsche Welle (DW) has made an official call for proposals for a comprehensive material utilization project at its relay station in Sines, Portugal. The broadcasting center boasts more than 500 tons of high-quality steel (ST 37 and ST 51) that can be reused and recycled.

Voices from the past

Tuning a radio set in the past needed some of the same skills required to crack a high security safe. One hand on the knob and the ear close to the box; as the knob played back and forth, so did the chances of hitting the right station… BBC, All India Radio and bingo “Yeh Radio Pakistan Hai!”

Radio Pakistan is an organisation that came into being the day Pakistan was created. On the night between August 14 and 15, 1947, the first announcement was made from Lahore by celebrated broadcaster, Mustafa Ali Hamdani, followed by a similar announcement in English by Zahoor Azar, a CSS officer who later became the Director General of Radio Pakistan.

Cabinet cuts shortwave radio protection, sparking concern from doomed service

OTTAWA - The Conservative cabinet has quietly changed a rule that could have prevented the CBC from following through on its plan to cut its international shortwave radio service.

Supporters of Radio Canada International, which faces a near fatal 80-per-cent budget cut from the CBC, say that amounts to the government essentially ending all uncensored Canadian broadcasts to places like China and Russia.

Heritage Minister James Moore recommended an order in council, approved on June 7, that deleted a requirement for RCI to maintain a shortwave service.

BBC Bangla launch mobile audio sports updates

In time for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, BBC Bangla has added sports bulletins to its audio news available on mobile phones across Bangladesh.

Fans can listen to one minute sports updates by dialing the dedicated short-code, 16262, and choosing Option 2 when prompted. Sports updates will be part of the 15 two-minute news updates available throughout the day, offering audiences a unique global perspective on key national and international news stories.

The first BBC Bangla sports audio bulletin of the day will be available from 04.00 Bangladesh time. It will be updated at 12.00 and then every two hours until 22.00. The BBC Bangla world news audio bulletin will now be available from 08.00 Bangladesh time. There will be a total of 10 world news updates until 23.00. There will be additional sports and world news updates whenever there are breaking news stories. By calling 16262, mobile-phone users can also interact with the BBC via text and audio.

The BBC Bangla mobile news service is available nationally in Bangladesh on all of the country's mobile-phone networks, including Banglalink, Grameenphone, Robi, Airtel, Teletalk and CityCell.

BBC Bangla is a multimedia service, offering a wide range of news, information and analysis on radio and online, in text, audio and video. Sabir Mustafa, Editor, BBC Bangla, says: "There is clearly a high demand in Bangladesh for international sports news, particularly football and cricket. We felt that BBC Bangla will be well placed to offer this content to sport lovers across Bangladesh."

Head of BBC World Service Business Development, Asia Pacific, Indu Shekhar Sinha, adds: "We were thrilled that our decision to add sport to our audio news bulletins was welcomed by the Bangladeshi mobile operators who are hosting them."

DW's Albanian Service celebrates 20th anniversary

With its first radio show broadcast on June 1, 1992, the Albanian Service at Deutsche Welle is looking back at 20 years of programming. Today its offering includes television, online and radio content.

"Your program is like an open window that allows us Albanians to breathe in some Western air and acts as a bridge between east and west," commented one listener in 1992, when Deutsche Welle's first Albanian feature show came out on shortwave radio.

Over the past two decades Deutsche Welle has played an important role in Albania, which was completely isolated from the outside world until 1992 and which has undergone a difficult transformation process. It was also an important source of information during the Kosovo War in 1999.

"Today, as both Albania and Kosovo work towards being integrated into the European Union, DW's multimedia program in Albanian functions as an objective and globally-oriented source of news in the egion, giving the viewers, Internet users and listeners a European and German perspective that local media do not offer," said Vilma Filaj-Ballvora, head of the Albanian Service. "Despite increasing competition on the local market, Deutsche Welle remains a key information medium due to its credibility."

DW's Albanian Service produces television, online and radio content for the region. Since November 2011 it has been reaching viewers in Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia with its TV magazine EUROPA OT (Europe Today), broadcast weekly via three partner stations.

DW's Albanian news website offers important current affairs updates and receives over 300,000 clicks per month. It also gains additional readership through local print media: newspapers in both Albania and Kosovo quote content from the site nearly every day.

Completing the multimedia offering are radio news bulletins in Albanian, which are broadcast via partner stations in Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia.

More Iranians Getting News From VOA

Voice of America's audience in Iran grew sharply in 2012, according to new research data released Tuesday.

The Gallup poll, conducted in March, shows VOA's TV weekly audience grew to 21.4%, up from 6.5% in 2011. With the addition of radio and the Internet, VOA's total audience reach in Iran is now estimated at 22.1%.

Voice of America's Persian TV programs were taken off the popular Hotbird satellite in mid-2010, contributing to a sharp dip in audience figures from the previously estimated 20%. Resumption of VOA service on Hotbird shortly before this new survey played a role in restoring VOA's audience,

researchers say.

"This new data underscores the growing importance of satellite television in Iran, and the critical role that international broadcasters like Voice of America can play in providing balanced news coverage in a highly restrictive media environment," says VOA Director David Ensor.

"Millions of people in Iran turn to VOA and other international broadcasters to fill in the gaps left by state controlled outlets," Ensor says.
The Gallup poll, carried out under a contract with the U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors' Audience Research Program, found that while 86% of Iranians get news and information from domestic television, only 49% found the broadcasts "very trustworthy."

Internet usage is also growing sharply in Iran, with 43% saying they had Internet access, and the overwhelming majority of respondents (80%) saying they had it in their homes.

In the past year, Voice of America's Persian Service has updated its schedule and introduced a number of show changes, including the addition of the new program, Inside the USA , which shows Iranian audiences various aspects of American life and American institutions.

Cutting a vital link

The phenomenal hike in royalty and licence fee for community radio has come as a big blow to its rural operators.

As per the recent notification of the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing of the Ministry, the royalty and licence fee for operating a small FM community radio station broadcasting within a range of five to 10 kilometres has been raised from Rs.19,700 to Rs.91,000 per annum.

BBC is developing 3D Radio

"Three-dimensional television may only just have arrived, but engineers at the BBC are already working on the next step - 3D radio.

Researchers at the corporation's technology unit, BBC R&D, have been developing acoustics that can trick the listener into believing they are really at events such as concerts with sound coming from every direction - even above and below."

DRM launches dedicated information for India

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is pleased to announce the launch later this week of their new online information web page targeted at India. This is the first initiative of the new DRM chapter/group for India which was established a year ago in New Delhi. The new "Noticeboard" is for the benefit of all stakeholders and members of the public who are interested in making DRM a reality in India. Led by former AIR senior executive, Mr Yogendra Pal, the India chapter brings together AIR, some commercial broadcasters, chipset and receiver manufacturers, OEMs and other expertise from India and abroad.

Mr Pal described the new initiative as "coming at an opportune time as India is preparing for the introduction of DRM".

Vatican Radio's SW & MW transmission hours to be halved

As per a report published in asca.it , Vatican Radio's shortwave & medim wave transmissions from Santa Maria di Galeria will be reduced by half . The director of the Pontifical, p. Federico Lombardi, made the announcement this morning, who explained that the decision lies in a renewed strategy that favors the use of the Web for the dissemination of the contents of Vatican Radio in Europe and North America.

With effect from July 1, 2012 most of the SW & MW broadcasts towards Europe & Americas will be terminated but the services to Africa, Middle East & Asia will continue at present.

Radio broadcasters group pushes for analog FM chips in digital smartphones

Radio’s relevance may come down to smartphones. Last week, at a House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing about the “Future of Audio,” industry heads faced off about industry standards, evolving technologies and whether FM analog chips should be placed in smartphones, an issue that has brought accusations against radio’s “refusal to innovate” since 2010.

The Australia-based Fiji Freedom and Democracy Movement is now broadcasting its own radio program into Fiji. The Fiji Freedom and Democracy Movement in Australia has leased half an hour a week on the World Radio Network, a shortwave broadcaster, to get its anti-government message across.

CBC president says broadcaster can't 'be all things to all people'

TORONTO - The beleaguered CBC is seeking tenants for office space it owns across the country in a bid to generate revenue that would help it cover a multimillion shortfall.
Hubert Lacroix, president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, said Thursday the broadcaster hopes to generate $50 million through various measures that include putting ads on Radio 2 and leasing more than 74,000 square metres of real estate by 2017.

North Korea testing in DRM mode ?

North Korea appears to be testing digital radio broadcasting. Hiroshi Inoue, a radio monitor in Japan, received on Wednesday the country’s international radio service, Voice of Korea, broadcasting on shortwave using DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale). DRM is a digital broadcasting technology developed for use on AM and shortwave services.

Burma Agrees to Air VOA Programs

Voice of America English teaching programs will soon air on Burmese state radio under the terms of a breakthrough agreement reached Tuesday in the capital, Naypyitaw. VOA Director David Ensor, who signed the agreement with Thein Aung, Director General of Myanmar State Radio and Television, said the decision by Burma's long-isolated government is "a small step, but one that is symbolically important."


Speaking after the signing ceremony, Ensor predicted that "many Burmese will enjoy learning English through VOA programs, and we hope this will lead to bigger things in the future." During his visit, Ensor also held talks with Minister of Information Kyaw San, who expressed his support for greater access to the country, including issuing multiple entry visas for VOA reporters.


"The opportunity to provide our audience with firsthand, eyewitness reporting has become more important now, given the pace of change in the country," said VOA Burmese Service Chief Than Lwin Htun. "We commend the government of Burma for this important step in opening up its media landscape. We welcome the efforts to increase information access for the Burmese people," said Michael Lynton, presiding governor of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees VOA.

Burma, which was renamed Myanmar by military rulers following the suppression of pro-democracy protests in 1988, has been liberalizing since late last year. Voice of America's Burmese Service, which provides news coverage on radio, television, Internet and mobile platforms, recently updated the format of its daily TV news magazine and has a wide variety of English language teaching programs and podcasts available.

Under the agreement signed Tuesday, Burma's radio network will carry VOA's four-minute feature report (see: http://learningenglish.voanews.com/podcast.html ) three times weekly.

Radio again seeks to include FM tuners in mobile phones

Congressional lawmakers today will hear how new tech is affecting distribution and consumption of audio content.

Today at a Congressional hearing in Washington D.C., broadcasters are expected to tell lawmakers that in case of emergencies, cell networks become clogged and have proven to be unreliable. What the people need are FM tuners built into their handhelds that will enable them to receive radio reports.

Myanmar Radio TV, VOA to Cooperate in Program Broadcasting

WRN confirms that this new clandestine starts June 4 at 0830-0900 UTC on 11565 kHz via PALAU, and will be weekly on Mondays only. It`s sponsored by the Fiji Freedom and Democracy Movement, based in Adelaide, South Australia.

Note that HFCC has WHRI rather than T8WH registered on 11565 at 08-09. WHR schedules show Angel 4, the most likely transmitter, on 17650 at that time, and Angel 3 on 9930. 11565 was probably just a place-holder in HFCC. Searching WHR program schedules is fruitless

We ask all active shortwave listeners to help us update the World Radio TV Handbook 2013 listings for the government NBC radio stations in Papua New Guinea so that our listings are as accurate as possible. The current listing is based on official government licencing records, information direct from stations and monitoring during 2011, but the situation in PNG is very fluid. The government crisis there, states of emergency in some provinces, the creation of two new provinces in the past week, and general elections during June offer unusual opportunities for SW stations to broadcast longer hours, or even restart previously silent SW transmitters.

BBG Decries Cambodian Government Cancellation of VOA, RFA Coverage During National Election

Washington, DC — The Broadcasting Board of Governors today condemned the Cambodian Ministry of Information’s decision to force FM stations to stop airing election programming from Radio Free Asia and the Voice of America.

The ministry prohibited five affiliate stations in Cambodia from running Khmer-language RFA and VOA programs on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3 — the day of national commune elections. The shows were all taken off the air without notice.

“This action runs contrary to the principles of free and fair elections,” said BBG Presiding Governor Michael Lynton. “News and information programs help shape a well-educated citizenry and should be encouraged, not denied. These attempts to silence RFA and VOA are counterproductive to the goals of building a democratic society in Cambodia.”

RFA and VOA play a critical role in informing the Cambodian electorate on fundamental election issues, and they provide a platform for the full spectrum of political opinions in the country. Due to government-imposed restrictions on political coverage by all media to avoid undue influence on the elections’ outcome, their programs on Sunday were focused on information necessary to voting, such as when polling stations were to open and close.

Two VOA Khmer Radio programs on June 3 were broadcast as normal on an AM frequency, via short wave and online.
