Ampegon upgrades shortwave transmission systems in Kuwait, to be DRM compatible

AMPEGON RENEWS SHORTWAVE TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS IN KUWAIT

Shortwave modernization project

Turgi, Switzerland, December 20, 2016. Ampegon has received a contract by Al Rashed company to upgrade five analog shortwave transmitters for the Kuwait Ministry of Information in Al Kabd station.

Ampegon will refurbish the five transmitters delivered in 1992 and 1995. Additionally, three transmitters delivered in 1995 will be upgraded to full digital DRM integration and converted to the new transmitter control system UCS (Unified Control System) including replacement of new motor drives within the tuning circuits. The latest DC motor technology allows faster and more accurate positioning of the transmitter tuning with digital control for fully automated frequency changes. Commissioning and on-site work by Ampegon and Al Rashed engineers will start in January 2017.

Al Rashed company provides turnkey projects in the broadcast field as well as professional services and integration solutions.

The Ministry of Information in Kuwait has one of the largest facilities in the Middle East and the project highlights that AM / DRM radio broadcasting keeps its important role in this area of the world.

Ampegon receives major contract from Télédiffusion d'Algérie

Turgi, Switzerland, August 21, 2015. Ampegon has received a major contract by Télédiffusion d'Algérie (TDA) for development and installation of new shortwave transmission systems, enabling TDA to broadcast SW without purchasing airtime from third party vendors. Ampegon has been selected within a restricted international call to tender as supplier. The company had already successfully installed multiple projects in Algeria. In 2014, Ampegon in cooperation with Transradio replaced the 1.5 MW longwave transmission systems near Tipaza and is presently modernizing two mediumwave transmitter stations in Bechar and Oulet Fayed.

Ampegon will accompany TDA through the entire project - developing turnkey solutions at the two sites including two 300 kW shortwave transmitters, two shortwave antenna systems and civil works. All the antenna works will be carried out by Ampegon in Schifferstadt, Germany, while the transmitters will be designed and constructed at the Ampegon factory in Turgi, Switzerland. The multi-million Euro project will be finished within two years at the end of 2016.

The book On Air celebrates a lifetime of achievement in the world of broadcast transmission engineering and includes many anecdotes from the lives of people involved.  100 hardback and 500 paperback editions of On Air were printed in June 2003 and they were all sold by early 2004.  A re-print was made available in January 2006 and they sold out in February 2009.

Ampegon delivers Shortwave Transmitters and Antenna Systems to Saudi Broadcast Corporation

Turgi, Switzerland, September 12, 2014. Saudi Broadcast Corporation (SBC), Saudi's National Broadcaster, has contracted Ampegon through undisputed Saudi market leader First Gulf Company (FGC) for the renewal of their radio transmission site in Riyadh. 

Ampegon will deliver four 500 kW shortwave transmitters, four shortwave antennas HRS 4/4/0.5 and the BroadMaster broadcast control system. The new systems will replace existing analog transmitters with four tubes by modern analog/digital transmitters having single high power tube amplification and hence a much better overall efficiency. Saudi Broadcast Corporation has selected FGC proposal with Ampegon because of the capability of FGC to handle large projects along with Ampegon's expertise and the reliability of their systems well known since decades. Ampegon had supplied several antenna and transmission systems in the past and feels honored to once again show presence in Saudi Arabia.

The transmitters will be manufactured in Turgi, Switzerland. Factory tests together with SBC engineers are planned for autumn and shipments before end of 2014. Commissioning by an Ampegon engineer will start afterwards and the new systems are expected to be on air within summer 2015.

Japan donates new shortwave transmitter to Solomon Islands

The Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has delivered a new radio broadcasting transmission facility through the National Broadcaster, SIBC.
 
The more than 40-million dollars facility is donated under a project called "Improvement of Radio Broadcasting Network for Disaster Prevention" and is to improve early warning systems during times of disasters in Solomon Islands.

AIR's SW txers on its way out ?

Quoting ET ....

In case of AIR, short wave transmitters were on its way out due to its crackling sound and ''where it is of no use it might as well be closed'', he said.

'Our focus was now on increasing the reach of FM radio as it had the added advantage of being received on telephones which ensures that it will reach a wider audience'', the CEO said.

Radio Hargeisa expected to be on air by next week ?

Radio Hargeisha's new 100 kW shortwave transmitter which was observed on air on 27th August 2012, was missing since last heard on air 31st Aug 2012, at 1500-1830 UTC, however this press report indicates they might be on air agian by next week.

"The transmissions have been ceased temporarily thus facilitate shifting from the testing face to full operations" Said Mr. Suleiman

Radio Canada's Sackville, N.B. transmitters will be sold

After decades of service, the transmission towers outside of Sackville, N.B are no longer broadcasting Radio Canada International to the world.
Martin Marcotte, director of CBC Transmission, said he's now looking to sell the New Brunswick towers and land. He said he's focussing on selling the site to other shortwave broadcasters or wind farm companies.

Deutsche Welle (DW) has made an official call for proposals for a comprehensive material utilization project at its relay station in Sines, Portugal. The broadcasting center boasts more than 500 tons of high-quality steel (ST 37 and ST 51) that can be reused and recycled.

Exciting news from Kununurra, Western Australia !

Technical project leader, HCJB Australia, Steve Sutherland, is confident that broadcasting from Kununurra site will start by November 2011. Three towers were erected this year; the long-awaited high tension power line was installed and connected in July. Next project? Antenna Curtain screens, assembled on the ground with the aid of work-gloves and lashings of sunscreen. By November, four of the planned seven antennas will be completed and at least one transmitter will shift to its new operational home. This means that hopefully all the completed antennas and transmitters can be connected and working this year!
Kununurra staff and volunteers pushed to get as much outdoor work as possible finished during the cool, dry winter months. Volunteers visiting at this time of year are invaluable, not only in the work they accomplish, but as surrogate grandparents for children on site. A third 100 KW transmitter undergoing refurbishment at the HCJB Technology Centre in Elkhart, Indiana, USA, is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2012 and will be capable of both analogue and digital shortwave broadcasting.

After 27 years, FEBC shutting down Saipan station for good

Far East Broadcasting Co., a non-profit, non-denominational missionary organization that broadcasts the gospel of Jesus Christ to many parts of Asia, will decommission its radio station on Saipan by the end of the year, after 27 years of broadcasting on island.
Bob Springer, FEBC general manager, attributed their decision to government deregulation and advances in communications technology that he said have significantly reduced the demand for shortwave broadcasting.

TWR's new SW transmitter at Guam successfully tested

On 9th August 2011 TWR's new Thomson transmitter was successfully tested for an initial power up RF test. For about 10 minutes a station ID and music tone was aired at 0100 UTC on 9920 kHz at 57KW.
