Digital Radio Mondiale at IBC 2018: ‘DRM Drives Forward’

Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is gearing up for an exciting presence and new announcements at this year's International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam 14th—19th September. IBC is the leading global tradeshow for broadcasters and media professionals and attracts over 1700 exhibitors from all over the world.

Under the overarching theme "DRM Drives Forward" the DRM Consortium has arranged a series of events aimed at giving a full picture of the many DRM global developments that have taken place in the last 12 months, with relevant announcements for the future. At all DRM events participants will be able to receive the latest updates on market developments in India and the rest of Asia, Africa, Europe and attend demonstrations of all the latest and this time also new DRM broadcast equipment and receivers. The DRM series will be kicked-off with an exciting event hosted by Fraunhofer IIS. This event will focus on one African country and how DRM can deliver for a lot of large countries with diverse communities and needs. A good opportunity to bring you some breaking and exciting news from India, too.

All those interested are invited to meet DRM experts, broadcasters and manufacturers: Fraunhofer IIS and several members of the DRM Consortium on Friday 14th September (Hall 8 B80 from 1500 to 1630), Nautel on September the 15th between 1530 and 1700 (Hall 8 C49). And Sunday 16th September Ampegon is inviting all those interested to a special event from 1100 to 1300 (Hall 8 E62).

Ampegon takes over the MW product line of Transradio Sendersysteme Berlin AG

Berlin, Germany, January 24, 2018. Following the insolvency of TRANSRADIO SenderSysteme Berlin AG in May 2017, many existing Transradio mediumwave transmitter customers have been left uncertain about how to complete existing contracts, and how to continue to operate and maintain their systems.

In the spirit of their previous cooperation agreement with TRANSRADIO SenderSysteme Berlin AG and their customers, the Ampegon Group have made a strategic decision to step back into the mediumwave transmitter market. Ampegon acquired the TRAM and SCIAMP product lines together with the manufacturing site, warehouse and the core engineering team in Berlin in order to assist customers left without support. The company will then continue to produce lower power medium  wave transmitters to maintain the competitive MW market that ultimately benefits broadcasters.

For legal reasons, while the enterprise necessary to accomplish this is being established, the Ampegon Group has formed a daughter company in Germany named AM Broadcast GmbH. This company is being used to establish Ampegon's position in the market as an intermediate step. The company organization is in place and is now supporting mediumwave broadcasters with all the experience that you would expect from one of the world's longest-established players in the field of AM broadcasting.

For example, under this arrangement, existing Transradio Contracts can be reassigned in order to allow the Ampegon Group to complete them with minimum possible disruption. This will prevent contracts of significant value collapsing, leaving everyone disappointed without operational systems, and ensure future support during and beyond warranty period.

Once the legal insolvency formalities are completed, it is intended that TRANSRADIO SenderSysteme Berlin GmbH will be transferred into the Ampegon Group. Afterwards, AM Broadcast GmbH will be renamed as an Ampegon branded company.

Since the legal process to achieve these aims takes some time, Ampegon asks affected MW broadcasters for their patience while remaining legal matters are resolved. However, as the organization is in place, we are already supporting their operations from now onwards under the names AM Broadcast and Ampegon.

The system, which will be installed WBCQ in the United States, is designed for the transmission of shortwave signals of up to 500 kW, the high-power antenna offers different radiation patterns, an antenna gain of up to 23 dB and uses a technology characterized by a single-shaft structural design.

Having identified these new pressures, Ampegon is pro-actively changing its organization for the future as follows:

Joachim Markus is stepping down as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ampegon Group on June 30, 2017. This position will be filled by Josef Troxler, effective July 1, 2017.

Josef Troxler leaves his post as Chief Executive Officer of Ampegon Group, and Managing Director of Ampegon AG, on June 30,2017. Mr. Troxler's commitment and tireless dedication to his function as CEO over the past few years has brought success to Ampegon. In his new function as Chairman of the Board of Directors he will continue to actively support the Ampegon Group and provide greater strategic leadership.

As well as being Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Troxler will continue in his current role as Managing Director of Ampegon Antenna Systems GmbH.

Dieter Schäufler will be appointed as new Chief Executive Officer of the Ampegon Group and Managing Director of Ampegon AG on July 1, 2017. Mr. Schäufler has been with the company for 2 years, successfully managing the day-to-day operation of Ampegon PPT GmbH in Dortmund. In addition to his new function, he will continue to lead the management of Ampegon PPT GmbH.

We wish Mr. Schäufler every success and foresight with a steady hand whilst managing the Ampegon Group.

Digital Radio Mondiale to hold this year’s General Assembly in Switzerland

Under the banner "Digital Radio Mondiale Delivers", the 2017 General Assembly of the DRM Consortium is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th of May in Baden near Zurich, Switzerland being hosted by Ampegon.

The two-day event will start with the exclusive General Assembly meeting for members only on Wednesday, May 10th in the morning. At lunchtime the Consortium will open its doors widely to all those interested in DRM and digital radio. The Open DRM event will include updates from all the key DRM countries and will run through until lunchtime on Thursday 11th. Special VIP guests have been invited to attend the Open sessions of the GA where they will have an opportunity to review and receive updates from country representatives and specialists on an outstanding year of progress for DRM.

Ampegon upgrades shortwave transmission systems in Kuwait, to be DRM compatible

AMPEGON RENEWS SHORTWAVE TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS IN KUWAIT

Turgi, Switzerland, December 20, 2016. Ampegon has received a contract by Al Rashed company to upgrade five analog shortwave transmitters for the Kuwait Ministry of Information in Al Kabd station.

Ampegon will refurbish the five transmitters delivered in 1992 and 1995. Additionally, three transmitters delivered in 1995 will be upgraded to full digital DRM integration and converted to the new transmitter control system UCS (Unified Control System) including replacement of new motor drives within the tuning circuits. The latest DC motor technology allows faster and more accurate positioning of the transmitter tuning with digital control for fully automated frequency changes. Commissioning and on-site work by Ampegon and Al Rashed engineers will start in January 2017.

Al Rashed company provides turnkey projects in the broadcast field as well as professional services and integration solutions.

The Ministry of Information in Kuwait has one of the largest facilities in the Middle East and the project highlights that AM / DRM radio broadcasting keeps its important role in this area of the world.

Ampegon receives major contract from Télédiffusion d'Algérie

Turgi, Switzerland, August 21, 2015. Ampegon has received a major contract by Télédiffusion d'Algérie (TDA) for development and installation of new shortwave transmission systems, enabling TDA to broadcast SW without purchasing airtime from third party vendors. Ampegon has been selected within a restricted international call to tender as supplier. The company had already successfully installed multiple projects in Algeria. In 2014, Ampegon in cooperation with Transradio replaced the 1.5 MW longwave transmission systems near Tipaza and is presently modernizing two mediumwave transmitter stations in Bechar and Oulet Fayed.

Ampegon will accompany TDA through the entire project - developing turnkey solutions at the two sites including two 300 kW shortwave transmitters, two shortwave antenna systems and civil works. All the antenna works will be carried out by Ampegon in Schifferstadt, Germany, while the transmitters will be designed and constructed at the Ampegon factory in Turgi, Switzerland. The multi-million Euro project will be finished within two years at the end of 2016.

Digital Radio Mondiale test by RFmondial & Leibniz University using Ampegon transmitter

Turgi, Switzerland, March 20, 2015. Ampegon has granted a solid state low power (500 W) transmission solution to RFmondial GmbH in Hannover, Germany. In cooperation with the Institute of Communication Technology (IKT) at the Leibniz Universität Hannover the transmitter enables technologists to continue expert measurements and demonstrations of the DRM standard on regular city environmental broadcasting conditions. A broadcast license for 26.045 MHz shortwave has been given to the Leibniz Universität Hannover.
 
The installation will bring DRM technology and research equipment to the campus laboratory allowing technical demonstrations for professional listeners and reception results. The use of the equipment in mobile configuration enables a testing environment for improved car radio receivers with live reception inside a city. The unlimited access and the flexible operation of the broadcast chain including all possible configurations and power levels will help to test and demonstrate DRM live broadcast and will show the technical strength of the technology. The equipment is fully remote accessible for unmanned operation.
 
New algorithms, coding and power improvements will be tested and verified. System linearization and coverage conditions for several operation modes are under examination. The measurements and reports are well received in international technical publications and conferences.
 
This DRM installation is a complete DRM service chain maintained and operated by RFmondial together with the Leibniz Universität Hannover and the support of Fraunhofer IIS. It co-exists next to a DRM transmission in the FM band at 95.2 MHz. In parallel to experiments under their own supervision, the service is offered to receiver, module or chip-set manufacturers to verify and improve their implementations under real environmental conditions.

Ampegon delivers Shortwave Transmitters and Antenna Systems to Saudi Broadcast Corporation

Turgi, Switzerland, September 12, 2014. Saudi Broadcast Corporation (SBC), Saudi's National Broadcaster, has contracted Ampegon through undisputed Saudi market leader First Gulf Company (FGC) for the renewal of their radio transmission site in Riyadh. 

Ampegon will deliver four 500 kW shortwave transmitters, four shortwave antennas HRS 4/4/0.5 and the BroadMaster broadcast control system. The new systems will replace existing analog transmitters with four tubes by modern analog/digital transmitters having single high power tube amplification and hence a much better overall efficiency. Saudi Broadcast Corporation has selected FGC proposal with Ampegon because of the capability of FGC to handle large projects along with Ampegon's expertise and the reliability of their systems well known since decades. Ampegon had supplied several antenna and transmission systems in the past and feels honored to once again show presence in Saudi Arabia.

The transmitters will be manufactured in Turgi, Switzerland. Factory tests together with SBC engineers are planned for autumn and shipments before end of 2014. Commissioning by an Ampegon engineer will start afterwards and the new systems are expected to be on air within summer 2015.

TRANSRADIO and AMPEGON continue and develop their good business relations to Télédiffusion d'Algérie (TDA)

Renewing its confidence in TRANSRADIO's technology and experience with complex AM/DRM turn-key projects, Télédiffusion d’Algérie (TDA), the national broadcaster of Algeria, again chose the cooperation of TRANSRADIO and Ampegon to upgrade and improve its AM broadcasting network with another two high-power MW transmitter systems.
 
Just a few month after getting the order for the 1500 kW LW station in Tipaza, TRANSRADIO again was rewarded with the contract to renew existing AM equipment in Ouled Fayet (600 kW) and Bechar (400kW) in February 2014. The cooperation partner Ampegon will be responsible for the new antenna systems and dummy loads. Both companies look forward to prove again its ability to manage such outstanding projects.
 
It has been exactly at the site Ouled Fayet where TDA and TSB started their successful AM partnership in 2002 as TSB has put a small TRAM line transmitter into service. The high-quality and reliable technical concept of the TRAM line convinced TDA technicians and engineers so quickly that in the following years TDA asked TSB to deliver lots of AM stations for the whole country in nearly all power classes from 10 to 1.500kW.

Digital Radio Mondiale(tm) (DRM) successful Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event in India focuses on manufacturing opportunities

The one-day National Seminar 'DRM: The Future of Indian Radio - Business Opportunities for Stakeholders' on 28 February, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in co-operation with the DRM Consortium, was the first of its kind involving technology specialists, broadcasters and representatives of Government and industry. The seminar In New Delhi attended by over 120 participants focused on the opportunities offered by the current roll-out of digital radio to the Indian industry. Several speakers stressed that All India Radio (AIR) was equipped to launch DRM, which would make all short wave and medium wave channels available to everyone in FM-quality over an area and at a cost that no current or future FM plan could match. The reach would be unlike FM which was today available to around 45 per cent of the country (including 25 per cent coverage by private channels). On the other hand, medium wave covered the entire country.


Several speakers also said AIR examined in great detail all the options, made a judicious proposal sanctioned by the Indian government which was as recent as last month endorsed by an advisor to the Prime Minister. All India Radio (AIR) Deputy Director General (Engineering) S K Saxena stressed that 36 DRM transmitters were in various stages of implementation in the country under a plan approved by the Planning Commission. Officials of the AIR said that the commissioning of 100 kW, 200 kW and 300 kW Transmitters is likely to be over by end of December 2014. Eight DRM transmitters are already on air in simulcast, though AIR would like to move eventually to a digital signal only. AIR is in the process of replacing or converting 72 MW transmitters to digital ones across the country, which should increase coverage to 70 per cent of the Indian population, representing some 800 million people. As it was stressed throughout the day by many Indian and foreign speakers, DRM technology provides the listeners with enhanced audio quality, service reliability, added data services, emergency warning alerts, targeted advertising and a more efficient transmission system that greatly lowers the power costs.


FM, while popular in India, said Yogendra Pal, Honorary Chairman of the DRM Indian Platform, is spectrum hungry and not an answer in places like Delhi "where AIR alone would need up to 25 niche channels, an impossibility". Later in his presentation Matthias Stoll of Ampegon demonstrated how one 100KW DRM medium wave transmitter, working at 90 % efficiency, would need to be replaced with 15 FM transmitters of 10 kW working at 55% efficiency, if an area of about 600 kilometres is to be covered.


Referring to criticism that affordable DRM sets were not available, AIR Engineering-in-Chief R K Budhiraja said that four Indian manufacturers had expressed interest in manufacturing affordable DRM sets in response to a tender floated by AIR, provided there was content and demand. The clear aim of the seminar was to tackle head on the question of receivers. And the CII event did not disappoint as it included a full, lively session with excellent contributions from representatives of chipset manufacturers (like Analog Devices, NXP), local entrepreneurs engaged already in designing or even manufacturing receivers. All speakers underlined the need for the industry to grasp this opportunity, for the government to support the revival of the indigenous electronics industry and for the public broadcaster to give serious attention and support to the roll-out, content creation and communication of a project with vast possibilities. Thus, Mr TVB Subrahmanyam of Analog Devices gave a clear picture of the potential yearly DRM market of about 16 million desktop, mobile and car radios, estimated at possibly a value of up to half a billion dollars.


Mr Ashak Chandok of NXP gave examples of the excellent tests carried out in cars in areas already covered by AIR DRM transmitters. If mobiles and cars are a clear market opportunity, Mr Ankit Aggrawal of Communication Systems Inc. offered a glimpse into the first Indian made desktop DRM receiver with all extra DRM features, ready to be produced very soon. Businessmen like A Kharabanda and Mr Ramendra Baoni talked about the excitement, the real challenges and great opportunities the DRM receiver market affords those willing to take the risk. All speakers mentioned that the price of receivers is dependent on good, desirable content and on volume while no price was really mentioned. Mr V Sharma, Chairman of CII National Committee on ICTE Manufacturing, sees the next step as getting the DRM receivers to be recognised by the government and manufacturers as one of the critical products deserving interest and investment.


Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairman, says that: " All in all this was the most successful meeting held by the DRM with the industry in India to date. The CII event offered up to the minute information on the roll out and actual DRM transmissions on the air and excellent news on DRM production. The buzz was all positive and palpable especially when one of the speakers Alexander Zink of Fraunhofer IIS demonstrated the sound qualities of DRM and then produced a regular tablet receiving DRM "live" on an attached dongle."

The progress on DRM in India and other key countries will figure prominently during the DRM General Assembly scheduled to take place on March 26th.

Transradio & Ampegon to replace 1.5 MW longwave transmitter at Algeria

Télédiffusion d’Algérie awarded AM Radio Project to TRANSRADIO and Ampegon
 
Berlin, Germany and Turgi, Switzerland; November 5, 2013. Télédiffusion d’Algérie (TDA), the national broadcaster of Algeria, selected TRANSRADIO and Ampegon to replace the 1.5 MW longwave transmission system located close to the city of Tipaza in July this year. Meanwhile all administrative matters were settled and the contract is put into force. The project was offered in cooperation between Transradio and Ampegon.
 
The Tipaza longwave transmitter is operated on 252 kHz broadcasting with 1500 kW on day and 750 kW on night time and is receivable in French all over the western Mediterranean area.

Ampegon is a leading supplier of transmission and antenna systems and TRANSRADIO is a well-known manufacturer of radio broadcasting systems. The collaboration is primarily based on TRANSRADIO's longwave and mediumwave transmitter TRAM line and Ampegon's system expertise with comprehensive antenna products. Both companies are founding members of the DRM consortium and represent together the world´s largest number of successful DRM installations.

Ampegon delivers two 100 kW shortwave transmission systems to All India Radio

Turgi, Switzerland, August 8, 2013. All India Radio (AIR), India's National Broadcaster and the premier Public Service Broadcaster of the subcontinent, has ordered two 100 kW shortwave transmitters from Ampegon. The new systems will replace existing analogue transmitters with four tubes by modern analogue/digital transmitters having single tube and hence a much better overall efficiency. The transmitters will operate with the new Ampegon control system to optimize DRM performance, an important factor in the growing Indian DRM market.
 
All India Radio has selected Ampegon as supplier because of the expertise and the reliability of their transmitters well known since decades. AIR is already using many different Ampegon AM/DRM radio transmitters which have been delivered between 1983 and 2012.
 
The transmitters will be manufactured in Turgi, Switzerland. Factory tests together with AIR engineers are planned for January and shipment for February 2014. Thereafter AIR will install the transmitters at a site near New Delhi. Commissioning together with an Ampegon engineer will start in August 2014. The new transmitters are expected to be on air in October 2014.
 
They will be partially used for DRM digital broadcasting and partially for analogue transmission. Furthermore AIR has plans to upgrade 36 of the existing AM mediumwave and 4 of the existing AM shortwave transmitters for DRM digital broadcasting.
 
AIR originates programming in 23 languages and 146 dialects. AIR operates 244 FM transmitters for coverage of 29.4% surface area and 41.6% of the population. AIR also operates mediumwave transmitters which cover 92% surface area and 99% of the population. Further AIR operates 48 shortwave transmitters. 21 of them are 500 kW or 250 kW shortwave transmitters and are used for external international services. 27 of them are 50 or 100 kW shortwave transmitters and are used for local services and for coverage of neighboring countries.

World’s biggest SW modernization project under execution in Taiwan

Ampegon has received the third part of an ongoing contract by RTI Radio Taiwan International to upgrade two radio transmission sites in Taiwan. In cooperation with the local partner Techway Engineering Ltd, Ampegon will manufacture, install and commission a total of ten 300 kW DRM shortwave transmitters and twelve rigid dipole broadcast antennas HR2/2/0.3 securing low and efficient maintenance works.
