These weeks, a hearing on the funding of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is underway in the Federal District Court in Washington. The media corporation is seeking from its trustee organization, the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the transfer of approximately $75 million, already appropriated by the US Congress for the 2025 fiscal year.

The temporary management of USAGM appointed by the new US administration froze the transfer of funds on March 15, but a few days later partially restored the payments, after the court adopted temporary injunctions prohibiting the denial of funding to RFE/RL. USAGM explains the delays in the transfer of funds by the ongoing campaign in the country to reduce government spending, the fight against the ineffective spending of taxpayers' money.

Radio Nepal celebrates 75th anniversary

Head of State and Government of Nepal expressed best wishes to Radio Nepal on its 75th Anniversary
President Ram Chandra Poudel has issued a message of congratulations on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Radio Nepal (Diamond Jubilee). While mentioning that the establishment of Radio Nepal is linked to the historical events of the establishment of democracy in Nepal, the President has said that it is the starting point for the country's broadcasting media to enter an era.

Radio Nepal is the state-owned Radio broadcasting organisation of Nepal. It was established on 2 April 1951. In 1951, Radio Prajatantra was transferred to Kathmandu at Singha Durbar by Tarini Prasad Koirala, where it took the name Radio Nepal and started regular broadcasting on April 2, 1951. A 250-watt short-wave transmitter was used. Initially, daily transmission lasted 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Radio Nepal airs programs on shortwave, medium wave (AM) and FM frequencies. Regular broadcasts consume sixteen hours every day, including two hours of regional broadcasts. Public holidays feature an additional two hours. FM Kathmandu, the first FM channel covering Kathmandu valley and adjoining areas, was started in 1995 in Singha Durbar, Kathmandu. The Radio Nepal Broadcasting Act was enacted in 2014.
