BBC Local Radio Medium Wave transmission changes

BBC Local Radio Medium Wave transmission changes

BBC Local Radio Medium Wave transmission services in Cumbria, Derby, Gloucestershire, Norfolk and Somerset will close by the end of November 2026. This is the final phase of a switch off process which was announced in 2011 with phased closures in 2018 and 2020.
This means if you currently listen on MW radio, you will need to switch to another way of listening. The good news is that your local BBC radio station, programmes and schedules are not changing.

You can continue listening to the same local BBC radio service through:

FM radio
DAB Digital Radio
BBC Sounds
Online via the BBC website
Smart speakers

This change reflects how listening habits have changed over time, with more audiences choosing FM, DAB and digital services. Whichever platform you choose, you'll continue to receive the same local BBC radio programmes and content.

BBC World Service to launch new language offers in Hungarian and Romanian

Uploaded Image
BBC World Service to launch new language offers in Hungarian and Romanian

BBC World Service will launch content in Hungarian and Romanian, further building on its global commitment to reach more people with trusted news. The new pilot services, BBC News Magyarul and BBC News Romania, will deliver news and analysis via their websites – bbc.com/magyarul and bbc.com/romania – and their social-media channels.

The Hungarian-language website and social-media channels on Facebook and Instagram will go live from Tuesday 16 June. The Romanian-language website and social-media channels on Facebook and Instagram will be available from Tuesday 23 June. Both language offers will have YouTube and TikTok channels going live later.

To serve their respective audiences – across Hungary, Romania, Moldova and beyond – with independent and impartial coverage of key global and regional developments, the pilot services will cover a broad range of topics on which audiences in Central and Eastern Europe are seeking accurate information, and will be in easily discoverable, social-first formats. The content offers in Hungarian and Romanian will share a mix of stories covering global and European current affairs, health, science, technology, climate, and cost of living.

Both editorial teams will use AI translation technologies responsibly to bring audiences the BBC’s high-quality global journalism in Hungarian and Romanian. Journalists will curate the editorial offer and ensure there is human oversight of all AI-assisted content which will be clearly labelled when used. Alongside this, the teams will produce original reports and analysis.

Interim Global Director, BBC News, Fiona Crack, says: “In an age of shrinking press freedom, rising disinformation, and global uncertainty, delivering independent and impartial news has never been more important. Launching BBC News Magyarul and BBC News Romania is a milestone built on innovation, like AI-assisted translation tools used responsibly, in order to reach new audiences with trusted news.”

BBC News Magyarul and BBC News Romania follow the successful launch of BBC News Polska. In less than a year since its inception, BBC News Polska has an average weekly reach of 537,000. In the most recent quarter, this grew substantially, with a weekly average of 808,000. The service’s reach among women is particularly high, making up nearly 60% of audiences on average since launch.

BBC News Magyarul and BBC News Romania Editorial Lead, Kateryna Khinkulova, adds: “I’m excited to be leading a team of highly skilled and experienced colleagues as we launch BBC journalism in two more languages, Hungarian and Romanian. Our offer is tailored to share high-quality journalism on the subjects that are of special relevance to the audiences we serve. With these two languages, we are eager to expand our reach in the region, especially to women and younger audiences, with the best of the BBC’s journalism.”

Expanding the BBC World Service’s global content offer to 45 languages including English, BBC News Magyarul and BBC News Romania will be available digitally around the world.

BBC News Magyarul and BBC News Romania add to the BBC’s presence in Hungary, Romania, and Moldova via BBC Studios. In Hungary, BBC Studios distributes the television channels BBC News and BBC Earth; in Romania – BBC News, BBC Earth and BBC First; in Moldova – BBC News and BBC
First.

The BBC’s radio broadcasts – and later, websites – served Hungarian-speaking audiences between 1939 and 2005. The Romanian service operated between 1939 and 2008.

BBC launches emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran

BBC launches emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran
The programme will air daily for 30 minutes across medium and shortwave frequencies

The BBC World Service has launched a temporary emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran in response to the ongoing turmoil in the country, and the unprecedented crackdown on protests.

To complement the existing BBC News Persian video and digital services, the radio programme will be available on mediumwave and shortwave across Iran to increase the population's access to news and information. To broaden its offer and availability of programming, the BBC World Service has also made some of its TV content available on mediumwave radio.

Since 8 January, the Iranian people have been subject to an internet blackout. Prior to this, BBC News Persian's digital services saw their biggest reach in a year with their platforms reaching more than 33 million people.

The short-term programme will cover the latest news and developments in Iran and will place events inside the country within their wider regional and international context. It will feature voices from inside Iran alongside clear, informed analysis of the most recent political, social, and economic developments shaping the situation in the country.

The programme will air daily for 30 minutes across medium and shortwave frequencies from 4.30pm GMT / 8pm Iran Standard Time. The temporary programme has been granted resource from existing funds until the end of March 2026.

Fiona Crack, Interim Global Director, BBC News, says: "A key role of the BBC World Service is to step up in times of crisis to provide news and information for our audiences in greatest need. BBC News Persian reaches one in four adults in Iran, which is an astonishing feat considering their reporting is banned in the country.

"The team have been essential in telling the urgent story of the Iranian people to audiences around the world, and our new radio programme will give the Iranian people more ways to access independent and impartial news."

Tarik Kafala, Interim Regional Director, Middle East and North Africa, says: "BBC News Persian have worked tirelessly to deliver journalism throughout this period of unrest as the demand for trusted news has soared in Iran. The teams have supplied extended TV hours in Iran and an increased offer on digital platforms for the Iranian people. They have reported for UK audiences across bulletins, live pages and on forensic journalism with BBC Verify."

The BBC World Service has a history of launching emergency services in times of crisis. In April 2025, BBC News Burmese started providing audio and video content on a satellite channel in the aftermath of Myanmar earthquake.

In April 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime, the BBC World Service set up an enhanced audio channel on FM and mediumwave for the people of Syria. This follows the emergency radio service for Gaza in November 2024 and for Sudan in May 2023 amid conflict.

In February 2022, the BBC News Ukraine service extended TV bulletins following the invasion of the country.

Where to find the programme:

The live programme will be available at 4.30pm GMT (8pm Iran Time) on 702kHz medium wave and 9465kHz short wave

The programme will be repeated at 6pm GMT (9.30pm Iran time) on 702kHz mediumwave and 5395kHz shortwave

A visualised version of the programme will be broadcast on BBC Persian TV at 6pm GMT (9.30pm Iran time)

BBC World Service announces the launch of BBC Global Women

BBC World Service is launching BBC Global Women, a bold new commitment to highlight women's storytelling across its global output.

Amid reductions in press freedom globally, the need to reach women and girls around the world with trusted news has never been greater. This new editorial priority will enhance the BBC World Service's storytelling by listening, sharing and amplifying stories for women around the world.

BBC Global Women is dedicated to stories that resonate with women worldwide, all year-round.

Alongside new commissions, the initiative will elevate the editorial offer for women by starting conversations, building connections and challenging misinformation. The first commissions under Global Women include exclusive interviews with KPop Demon Hunters' Arden Cho and the First Lady of Sierra Leone, and an investigation into how sexual violence is being used as a weapon in conflict in Ethiopian.

BBC Global Women will deliver fresh, original content throughout the year – including ground-breaking and access-led documentaries, interviews, and stories for women in every corner of the world – across BBC News and BBC World Service digital, social and broadcast channels.

Fiona Crack, Deputy Global Director, BBC News says:

"Press freedom continues to reduce globally, making it harder for the BBC to reach audiences and for audiences to access independent news. Internationally, we also know women in particular view, read and listen to less of our news than men. This is an issue we must urgently address so sharing more stories that matter to women and commissioning stories that resonate with women will be at the centre of BBC Global Women."

Audiences can look forward to a powerful mix of exclusive interviews, original documentaries and social investigations from all corners of the globe.

Upcoming highlights include:

  • Exclusive interviews in the BBC Global Women Meets... series, featuring KPop Demon Hunters' Arden Cho, and First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Bio
  • Groundbreaking documentaries including The Battle to Get My Child Back which follows Greenlandic parents fighting to reclaim their children taken under discredited "parenting competency tests"
  • A BBC World Service investigation into the hidden conflict in Ethiopia's Amhara region where thousands of women have suffered in silence. With incredibly rare access to voices from a region largely closed off to the media, the BBC hears from three survivors of sexual violence which has been used as a weapon in this conflict.

BBC World Service launches emergency shortwave radio service for Sudan

The programme, which will be broadcast live in London with input from teams in Amman and Cairo, will air on short wave in Sudan and be available on radio, online and across social media

The BBC World Service has launched an emergency pop-up radio service on BBC News Arabic for Sudan to provide vital access to news and information for those in the country.

Broadcast twice daily, and complementing our enhanced digital content, the service will feature eye witness accounts, news on diplomatic efforts and serve to counter disinformation in the country. Listeners will also hear information on how to access essential supplies and services as well as analysis from voices inside and outside Sudan.

The programme, which will be broadcast live in London with input from teams in Amman and Cairo, will air on short wave in Sudan and be available on radio, online and across social media.

Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, says: "The World Service provides an essential lifeline to many around the world where access to accurate news and information is scarce. The enhanced emergency service for Sudan will be crucial at a time of great uncertainty in the country."

Liliane Landor, Director, World Service, says: "The situation in Sudan has escalated quickly with its citizens seeking clear, independent information and advice at a time of critical need. BBC Arabic's Emergency Radio Service for Sudan will bring vital live updates of the situation on the ground and inform listeners of life-saving resources."

The programme will broadcast twice daily for three months at 0700 UTC (8am BST, 9am local time) on 21510 kHz and 1500 UTC (4pm BST, 5pm local time) on 15310 kHz. The first programme will be available on Tuesday 2 May at 1500 UTC.

The BBC World Service has a history of responding to emergency situations globally. Most recently, in February 2022, the BBC News Ukraine service began extended TV bulletins following the invasion of the country.

BBC releases annual report for the year 2021-22

BBC Group Annual Report and Accounts 2021/22 is now available at :

Year of exceptional delivery as BBC marks centenary

Delivery for audiences has been our biggest achievement. In a world of rapidly increasing choice the BBC continues to reach 90% of UK adults on average each week, rising to 97% over a month.

This annual report highlights a year of delivery. The BBC is the nation's number one media brand. We have increased value for money and become leaner, while at the same time BBC Studios has smashed all previous commercial records.

Delivery for audiences has been our biggest achievement. In a world of rapidly increasing choice the BBC continues to reach 90% of UK adults on average each week, rising to 97% over a month.

Highlights include:

High impact video content including The Tourist, The Green Planet and The Euros has drawn millions of viewers. In audio, millions are coming to our services, with 62% of adults listening to BBC Radio on average per week, ahead of any other audio provider.

BBC iPlayer attracted record audiences with 6.6 billion streams, up 8%, and BBC Sounds saw 1.54 billion UK plays of radio, music and podcasts, up 23%.

BBC News is the most trusted news source and is the first place the UK public turns to for impartial news coverage of major events. This year saw record numbers globally tune into BBC coverage of the war in Ukraine.

The BBC continues to drive change and improvements in this area, including the publication of our 10-point plan on impartiality and editorial standards.

The publication of this year's Annual Report and Accounts comes against a backdrop that includes the most challenging media market in the BBC's 100-year history; super-inflation in TV production; and tough choices brought about by the Licence Fee settlement for the remainder of the Charter.

The BBC's Across the UK plans are being realised. We are now making 54% of our content outside London and reflecting more of the nation back to itself. Some of our biggest programmes were made in the nations, from Vigil in Scotland, Hidden in Wales and Conversations with Friends in Northern Ireland. MasterChef will soon be moving to Birmingham.

Our investment in the creative sector is supporting economic growth and 53,000 jobs across the UK. Every £1 of the BBC's economic activity now generates a total of £2.63 for the wider economy.

BBC Studios had a record performance in 21/22, with sales up 30% year-on-year, at £1.6 billion, and a 50% increase in profit (EBITDA) at £226 million, the first time it has recorded profit above £200 million.

We continue to work towards our 50:20:12 staffing targets. Our staff make-up is now 49.5% women, 16.4% black and minority ethnic and 9.3% disabled - all up on last year.  We also introduced a new socio-economic diversity target of 25% this year. We will now redouble our efforts to reach all our workforce diversity targets including at leadership level, which we know we need to go further and faster on.

In this record-breaking year we also continued our journey to be a simpler and leaner BBC, reducing the public service headcount further by 409 to 17,781 and reducing Senior Manager numbers by 3%. We delivered £274 million of annual savings, bringing total savings delivered since 2016/17 to over £1 billion.

We also set out our path to reach Net Zero by 2030.

Richard Sharp, BBC Chairman says: "In our centenary year, the BBC is reaching almost half a billion people around the world, it is the UK's best-known cultural export and the world's most trusted news organisation.

"I'm proud of what we have achieved, grateful for the hard work that has delivered it and confident in the BBC's future.

"We must now accelerate the ongoing transformation of the BBC, into a modern, audience-focused, digital-first organisation."

Tim Davie, BBC Director-General says: "This annual report highlights a year of delivery for audiences - both in content and in creating a better, more agile and leaner BBC. There is no room for complacency. We have much work to do to ensure the BBC is fit for a bright future.

"We must continue to deliver world class UK content in an increasingly competitive media market, support our vibrant creative economy and reflect the modern, diverse United Kingdom, in everything we do.

"The future is not without challenges, but we have exciting plans in place and much to look forward to as we build a successful BBC for the years ahead."

Content highlights this year have included:

TV and iPlayer: Time, Bloodlands, Shetland, Guilt, The Pact, The Responder, Sherwood, Gentleman Jack, House of Maxwell.

BBC Three: returned as a broadcast channel backing ideas and new talent, like Kayleigh Llewellyn's BAFTA winning In My Skin.

Radio and Sounds: Forgotten Composers on Radio 3 and Things Fell Apart on Radio 4, podcasts including Ukrainecast and The Coming Storm.

Music: The BBC Proms celebrated the return of live music on a scale not seen since before the pandemic with 61 concerts over 44 days, featuring more than 2,000 musicians.

Sport: 25 million watched Euro 2020 as Gareth Southgate's Three Lions were beaten on penalties.
News: England news bulletins at 6:30pm on BBC One continue to be collectively the most watched news programme on TV and the BBC's Ukrainian language digital platforms have reached a record 6 million people.

Nations: We put BBC Scotland at the heart of our COP26 coverage, launched an official partnership between the BBC and Creative Wales, and reflected the centenary of Partition with a mix of landmark programmes from Northern Ireland.

Further achievements in the report include:

Weekly signed in iPlayer accounts for under 35s have increased to 3.8m from 3.2m.

The BBC is the only UK provider used by the majority of under-16s per week, ahead of both Netflix and Disney.

BBC Bitesize was used by 75% of secondary school pupils in the past year.

BBC income increased to £3.8bn and £3bn of this was spent on content and the expansion of our digital services – up 17% on last year.

BBC Studios has made record sales and profits of £200 million for the first time – an increase of 50% year-on-year, recorded income of £1,630 million - an increase of 30% year-on-year; and topped £400 million in content sales for the third consecutive year.
The BBC is the UK's best-known cultural export, with 60% awareness across the world – higher than other UK cultural exports such as British sports, universities and technology.

Last month we set out plans to become a digital first organisation. The first phase represents £500m of efficiencies, cuts and reinvestment to drive changes to content and output.

We've also published our latest update on our ongoing work on impartiality.

We continue to deliver for audiences through brilliant content and events that bring the nation together like the Queen's Jubilee and sporting events including Wimbledon, the Commonwealth Games, the Women's Euros and the World Cup.

BBC News Ukraine marks 30th anniversary amid Russian invasion

BBC News Ukraine marks 30th anniversary amid Russian invasion

As Russia's war on Ukraine continues to hold the global centre stage, the BBC is marking 30 years of serving its Ukrainian-speaking audience.

On 1 June 1992, the BBC started short- and medium-wave radio broadcasts for then newly independent Ukraine.  Today, BBC News Ukraine – BBC News Україна – is serving its audience via the website bbc.ua, its YouTube channel, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Telegram, TikTok and Viber.  The BBC News Ukraine Monday to Friday TV news programme is rebroadcast by Ukraine's national TV channels Espreso, Priamyj and 5 Kanal.

The Ukrainian service was the BBC's first non-Russian language service for the post-Soviet states.  First based in London, with correspondents in Ukraine, the service then moved to digital platforms, primarily delivered from Kyiv.  Its TV news programme is produced in and presented from London.

Senior Controller of BBC News International Services and Director of BBC World Service, Liliane Landor, says: "The excellent work of the BBC's Ukrainian service has gone from strength to strength over the decades.  Their coverage of the war really showcases their outstanding and often selfless professionalism, as demonstrated by each and everyone in the team.  Their journalism has been crucial, both for their direct audience and for the BBC's UK and global audiences."

As Russia launched its assault on Ukraine in the early hours of 24 February 2022, the BBC News Ukraine website bbc.ua started its live coverage, Russia's war against Ukraine. Published as the first explosions shook Kyiv, the live page, maintained by contributions from every member of the team, hasn't stopped its flow of comprehensive reporting and analysis.

Since 24 February, the BBC News Ukraine TV news bulletin has been extended from 15 to 30 minutes.  During the first two weeks of the war, to keep the viewers abreast of the fast-moving developments, the TV team produced a second daily 30-minute edition while also contributing to the BBC's English-language news coverage.  Weekly channel viewing on YouTube grew tenfold compared to the pre-war period.  Since 11 May, two more national TV channels, Priamyj and 5 Kanal, have been rebroadcasting the BBC News Ukraine TV programme.

BBC News Ukraine Editor, Marta Shokalo, comments: "While each of us, be it in Kyiv or London, has been personally affected by the life-shattering developments, our work as journalists has continued. From the very first day we were fully aware – also on a personal level – how crucial trusted information was when life-and-death decisions had to be made.  Those of us in Ukraine learned that we can work anywhere, even in a bomb-shelter.  I'll always remember the relief after morning and evening rollcalls confirming every member of the team was accounted for and safe.  And the unwavering support of the BBC colleagues in London and around the world."

On the first week of the Russia invasion, BBC News Ukraine reached a record 5.6 million people across the website bbc.ua and social platforms. Over the following two months, the service has maintained a weekly digital audience that is more than double its average for previous years.  Among the service's popular content, Albiy Shudrya's piece from the trenches in the Donetsk region about the contents of the Ukrainian army fighter's dry ration has clocked 1.4 million views on YouTube and 2.8 million views on the service's newly launched TikTok channel.

Alongside bringing the BBC's global news coverage to Ukrainian audiences, BBC News Ukraine continues to be a crucial part of bringing Ukraine to international audiences.  And even as the service's resources are dedicated to the all-consuming war coverage, Viktoriia Zhuhan's documentary about the Eurovision winners, Kalush Orchestra, provided the BBC's UK and international audiences with exclusive access to the group, following them from the war-torn outskirts of Kyiv to their triumph in Turin.

As it delivers the BBC's global news coverage to Ukrainian audiences, BBC News Ukraine continues to be a crucial part of bringing Ukraine to international audiences, with correspondents appearing across the BBC, helping shape the BBC storytelling with expert voices and analysis.

BBC News Ukraine is part of BBC World Service.

Independent research shows that there is an exceptionally high correlation between places where people are aware of the BBC and places where people think positively about the UK. More than that, the BBC helps UK trade. This has perhaps never been more important. The UK will forge a new relationship with the world in the decade ahead, built on an ambitious vision of 'Global Britain'. Success will mean drawing on all our considerable international assets, and that means unleashing the full global potential of the BBC."

In late March 2020, as the Covid-19 virus spread and trusted sources of information were in demand, BBC News recorded the highest reach of any international media organisation in the world with 310m people accessing coverage across 42 languages.

The Global Audience Measure is an annual update of how many people are consuming the BBC weekly for all services in all countries across all platforms (television, radio, website and social media). Key to this is de-duplication i.e. ensuring that a person who consumes multiple BBC services or platforms or on multiple devices is not counted many times in the top level totals, which means those totals are often not the sums of their constituent parts.
