RTM Malaysia completes FM radio upgrade in five states

Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) has completed the FM Radio Transmitter System Development and Upgrade Project on 25 August 2025. The RM18.75 million initiative was carried out under Phase 2 in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Negeri Sembilan.

The project involved 12 transmitters, four operated by RTM and eight by Telekom Malaysia (TM), with the work completed by Syarikat VME Broadcast Sdn Bhd according to schedule. The handover ceremony took place at the Tuanku Syed Putra Broadcasting Complex.

Deputy Director General of Broadcasting Operations, Ismail Sulaiman, said the upgrades had improved both broadcast quality and coverage, giving RTM stations a stronger presence in the five states.

Akashvani Kokrajhar new 10 kW FM Transmitter Inauguration tomorrow

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will virtually inaugurate the 10 KW FM Transmitter at Akashvani Kokrajhar. Previously operating with a 20-kilowatt Medium Wave transmitter since 1999, the introduction of the FM transmitter will extend its coverage to a 70-kilometer radius, enhancing receptivity for Kokrajhar and nearby districts.

Officials stated that this development ensures over 30 lakh residents across Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, and Chirang access to superior FM broadcast quality.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Lays the Foundation Stone for Akashvani Dahod FM Relay Station Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation Stone for Akashvani Dahod FM Relay Station Project in Gujarat. The foundation Stone plaque for the 10 Kilo watt FM Relay Station was unveiled virtually by the Prime Minister along with other projects at an event in Bodeli in the state.

This station will be set up at an estimated cost of Rs. 11.00 Crore and is strategically located to cover approximately a 55 km radius area, encompassing approximately 75% of the tribal district of Dahod. Moreover, this transmitter will also partially cover the neighbouring tribal districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Alirajpur and Jhabua.

With the launch of the Dahod station, over 25 lakh residents of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh will gain access to high-quality FM broadcasts. This development not only enriches the cultural and informational tapestry of the region but also facilitates better communication and connectivity for the communities it serves.

In addition to this, Prasar Bharati is also working on the installation of FM transmitters in key locations, including Bhuj, Bhavnagar, Dwarka, Radhanpur, and Dessa with varying power capacities at a cost of more than 39 crores. These projects are part of the Broadcast Infrastructure Network Development  Scheme funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The projects when completed and made operational will increase the FM coverage in the state to approximately 65% of the state's area and will enable a reach of about 77% of its population. These projects mark a significant stride toward providing quality radio entertainment and information to a broader audience.

Earlier in the month of April this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Ninety One  100 W FM transmitters strengthening Akashvani FM's presence across the country. As of now, Akashvani boasts a total of 613 functional FM transmitters in India, providing FM radio services to approximately 59.2% of the country's area and serving about 73.5% of the population.  In addition, the Akashvani AM network operating on medium wave already covers 88% of area and 95% of the population of the country.

PM Modi to inaugurate 91 FM transmitters on April 28 to boost radio connectivity in India


Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 91 FM transmitters tomorrow to boost radio connectivity in the country. The FM transmitters of 100 Watts will be inaugurated through video conferencing. These transmitters have been installed in 84 districts across 18 States and two Union Territories. A special focus of the expansion has been on enhancing coverage in aspirational districts and in border areas. The States and Union Territories which are covered include Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala,  Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Ladakh. With this expansion of All India Radio's FM service, an additional 2 crore people, who did not have access to the medium, will now be covered. It will result in expansion of coverage in about 35 thousand sq km area.

The government has been committed to enhance FM connectivity in the country. The Prime Minister has been a firm believer in the important role which radio plays in reaching out to the masses. Mr. Modi started Mann ki Baat programme, which is now nearing its landmark 100th episode to harness the unique strength of the medium to reach out to the widest possible audience.

Norway to switch off FM radio in risky, unpopular shift to digital

Norway is set to become the first nation to start switching off its FM radio network next week, in a risky and unpopular leap to digital technology that will be closely watched by other countries considering whether to follow suit.

Critics say the government is rushing the move and many people may miss warnings on emergencies that have until now been broadcast via the radio. Of particular concern are the 2 million cars on Norway's roads that are not equipped with Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) receivers, they say.

Bangladesh Betar to extend FM coverage

Bangladesh Betar is moving ahead with plans to widen its frequency modulation (FM) broadcasting coverage by setting up region-based FM radio bands. 

So far, a total of 32 separate FM radio bands have been set up by Bangladesh Betar. They run their shows for several hours each day. Besides the state-run bands, there are 17 private FM stations currently in operation, while the government has recently licensed 28 private organisations for FM broadcasting, which are yet to launch their operations.

Of the state-run FM bands, Dhaka station alone has eight, while Rajshahi station has four bands. Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna and Rangpur have three bands each.
The Comilla station has two bands while Thakurgaon, Barisal, Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarbon and Jessore have one each.

Gyan Vani FM channels to resume operation from January

The operation of Gyan Vani FM channels, which were stopped in 2014 due to discontinuation of payments by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), will be resumed from January.
Signing of an MoU between IGNOU and All India Radio (AIR) last week paved the way for resuming the operation of the educational radio channels.

IGNOU Vice Chancellor Prof Ravindra Kumar, who was present on the occasion of the MoU signing on December 9, said in the near future, there will be 56 Gyan Vani channels.

Before being shut down on October 1, 2014, 37 Gyan Vani stations across the country were broadcasting educational radio programmes which were instructional and enriched in nature for different target groups.

The MoU will facilitate sharing of Prasar Bharati's broadcasting infrastructure for the transmission of Gyan Vani radio stations which possess 10 KW FM transmitters, Prof Kiron Bansal, in-charge of Public Information Unit at IGNOU, said.

Gyan Vani began operations in 2001 as a collaborative media initiative of Human Resource Development and Information and Broadcasting ministries. IGNOU was the nodal organisation running the channels.

Due to discontinuation of payments by IGNOU from April 1, 2013, resulting in accumulation of dues to the tune of Rs 21.64 crore, operation of Gyan Vani channels were stopped by AIR.

Software package for car radios with DRM – Digital Radio Mondiale

Erlangen, Germany, March 10, 2016: A new generation of car radios is just around the corner. These devices receive information not by analog transmission, but digitally – for example, via the new standard, DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale). The advantages: increased sound quality, along with the ability to simultaneously transmit images and text information. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS are now offering device manufacturers a new software package with a decoder for DRM+, and in so doing have pushed digitization one step forward. DRM+ was developed for digital transmissions in the FM band and rounds out the DRM standard.

In a sense, FM radios are true antiques: for decades, they have relied on traditional analog signals. Digital transmission, however, makes for a far superior listening experience. Rather than being sent over the airwaves in analog form, the information is broadcast digitally. An antenna picks up the signal, and software embedded in the radio converts it back into music. The result: enhanced audio signal quality.

In the digitization of FM frequencies, many countries are moving to the new standard, DRM – short for Digital Radio Mondiale. India, with over a billion potential radio listeners, is but one example. The digital information is transmitted via the same frequencies that radio broadcasters have used for analog transmission for decades. Up to now, however, the introduction of the DRM standard has been delayed because broadcasters are waiting for device manufacturers to build DRM-capable radios. The manufacturers, in turn, have been holding back production until the broadcasting companies switch over to digital transmission signals.

The researchers at Fraunhofer IIS are stepping up to help accelerate the international DRM rollout. After developing high-quality receiver software for the DAB standard, which is popular in Germany and Europe, it was a logical step for Fraunhofer IIS to take a comparable approach to DRM. "As with our established DAB software package, we have now developed receiver software for the complete DRM standard," reveals Thomas Dettbarn, scientist at Fraunhofer IIS. "The radio manufacturers can build on a proven modular system, thus shortening their development times and, in turn, reducing their costs. This allows them to focus on integration and application development."

A central component of the modular system developed by Fraunhofer IIS, and the heart of any digital radio, is the baseband decoder. This converts the transmission signals received from the broadcaster into digital data streams. In the DRM standard, the sound quality is ensured by the new audio codec MPEG xHE-AAC – the successor to HE-AAC v2, which has a track record of success in DRM and DAB+. Numerous service decoders for the representation of text, images, and other value-added information are available as additional components of the modular DRM system. Of special note here is the text information service Journaline: similarly to teletext on TV, it presents specific information from the broadcaster that the users can read while listening to their favorite station. This may be news, weather reports, sports results, or station contact details for participating in the radio program. Journaline is also part of the DRM Emergency Warning Functionality, or EWF. In the case of an alert, EWF enables DRM receivers to switch automatically over to the emergency program, in which the audio announcement is accompanied by text giving multilingual details and instructions on looking up further needed information.

For manufacturers, Fraunhofer's modular approach to DRM means that they can select various features according to their own radio designs and compose the functional range of their devices as required.

BBC Burmese now on FM in Burma

BBC Burmese radio programmes - Mobigeno (Mobile Generation) and the English learning series Flatmates - will now be available for listening on FM in Burma (Myanmar), thanks to a re-broadcasting agreement with the country's leading radio network, Padamyar FM. This is a first for the BBC in Burma.
 
The Padamyar FM network, which is available in 120 towns across Burma, will now re-broadcast two BBC Burmese programmes which have a special appeal to younger audiences. The 10-minute Mobigeno – a programme for "mobile generation", in which successful young professionals, artists and sports personalities share their experiences and aspirations - will be broadcast at 10.25am local time every Saturday. Flatmates, the 5-minute radio soap opera for English learners, will be broadcast at 13.55 on Sundays and Thursdays.
 
Editor of BBC Burmese, Tin Htar Swe, says: "With the internet not readily available in Burma, FM is an important and very popular platform in the country. We are really thrilled to be expanding our reach via Padamyar FM's extensive network. This is also an exciting development for our listeners who can now tune in to BBC Burmese in crystal-clear FM quality."
 
Thida Swe, Assistant Director of Padamyar FM, adds: "We see the re-broadcasting partnership with the BBC as a milestone for our network. And while we are proud to be the first to deliver the BBC Burmese radio on FM in Myanmar, we are also happy that these programmes help the country's youth to better themselves and their chances for success – via inspirational stories from their peers, and also by improving their English."

Microsoft confirms Windows Phone 8 update to bring FM radio

Microsoft has announced a new Windows Phone 8 update that will bring features like FM radio and add CalDAV and CardDav support, which will extend support for Gmail and other Google services. The announcement came following the launch of the Nokia Lumia 925, which would be the first phone to ship with the update pre-installed.

China Radio to start Tamil FM channel in India

Beijing: China Radio International's Tamil service is all set to launch its FM station in India as part of its 50th anniversary this year.

CRI Tamil, which broadcasts on shortwave in Tamil Nadu, is in talks with some FM stations in Chennai, said Cai Jun aka Vani, deputy director of the Tamil department of CRI in Beijing.

Mobiles, cars help raise radio listenership

PATNA: On the occasion of World Radio Day, radio aficionados have a reason to cheer. Surveys conducted by various research organizations, including All India Radio's National Audience Research wing, show that radio is still the undisputed leader among the various means of communication.

Recently, the AIR initiated a step to set up six Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) transmitters of 300 kW and 21 medium wave transmitters of 100 kW and 300 kW , according to Prasar Bharati sources in Delhi. Apart from this, keeping with the government decision for transition to the digital mode of transmission, AIR is switching from analog to digital in a phased manner. With the target of complete digitization by 2017, listeners can look forward to highly enhanced transmission quality in the near future.

AWR now on FM band in India

Today [November 12, 2012], a Seventh-day Adventist program was broadcast for the first time on FM radio in India. The program was produced by Adventist World Radio (AWR) in the Telugu language, and was aired on a station in Hyderabad, India. The name of the program is Avennel, which means The Dawn in Telugu.
 
Adventist World Radio has just signed a contract with a broadcast agency for an initial series of 11 Telugu programs. Additional broadcasts in Hindi and English will follow in other large cities, such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Delhi, and others, as resources permit.
 
Hyderabad – known as India's "cyber capital" – is a city of more than nine million people and has the largest Muslim population in India. After China, India is the second most-populated country in the world.
 
"This is a very significant step to reach the large cities in India, which comes after two years of intensive work negotiating with related agencies and preparing the programs," says AWR president Dowell Chow. "Thanks to God and our faithful supporters, we are now blessed to be able to witness the opening of a new window of opportunity to reach the people of India with the gospel of salvation."
 
This first program went on the air at 5:30 p.m. local time in Hyderabad. AWR currently broadcasts programs for Indian listeners in 13 languages, through shortwave radio, on demand, and podcasts.

Radio broadcasters group pushes for analog FM chips in digital smartphones

Radio’s relevance may come down to smartphones. Last week, at a House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing about the “Future of Audio,” industry heads faced off about industry standards, evolving technologies and whether FM analog chips should be placed in smartphones, an issue that has brought accusations against radio’s “refusal to innovate” since 2010.
