Online HF prediction tools, tailored for Utility DXing

Recently I bumped into the relaunched web pages of the highly esteemed HF Prediction pages of Space Weather Services from the Australian Bureau of Metereology :

On their sub-page "Internet Tools" they offer some excellent tools for HF propagation prediction which seemed to be tailored just to the needs of us listeners.
I wrote a short PDF (7 pages, 22 illustrations) about that, giving some examples. This paper also deals with multipath propagation, degrading even strong digital signals plus FAX. Among the Aussies' web page you will find a set of tools under "Digital HF Prediction", dealing perfectly with just this challenge.

Shortwave listening like a fishing expedition

Trading clicks for turns, clarity for static ... and really loving it
By Bill Husted

My secret is revealed: I'm an analog guy in a digital world. Shortwave listening, once the drug of choice for nerds, is an unlikely hobby nowadays. After all, that distant station I'm straining to hear probably is also available as a crystal clear audio stream somewhere on the Internet.

Bruce Elving, Professor of FM Radio

For DXers, catching far-away stations is kind of like fishing. You don't want to catch just the easy ones. That's one reason FM and TV DXing was more fun than AM and shortwave DXing (at least for some of us). AM and shortwave depend on the ionosphere for distant coverage as a matter of course.

New E-mail list/id for Cumbre DX/DXing with Cumbre

"Cumbre DX" and "DXing with Cumbre" have lost a very good friend. Bob Arnold, N2JEU, who ran Cumbre DX's web and e-mail servers, and who also put the programs on iTunes for us, is a Silent Key at the age of only 58. We at Cumbre are heartbroken at this news, and send our sympathy to Bob's family and friends. "DXing with Cumbre" will continue on the air and WHR streaming audio, but the website, e-mail list and iTunes are gone for now. For those who can get to his funeral on Friday in Canastota, near Syracuse NY, details are available at the obituary link.
Please feel free to share the news, since the Cumbre DX list is gone with Bob's death. We thank Bob for all he did for us, and we know he'll be very much missed in the radio community.

QSLs Are a Portal to the Past

Recent articles in Radio World about AM DXing (long-distance listening) and QSLs (cards and letters verifying reception) are a reminder that the hobby of long-distance radio listening is still around.

Why ham radio endures in a world of tweets

Somehow it makes little sense that amateur "ham" radio continues to thrive in the age of Twitter, Facebook and iPhones. Yet the century-old communications technology -- which demands such commitment that you must generally pass an exam to receive a licence........

AIH3 DXpedition to Aihkiniemi

The first ever purpose-built DXpedition base in Finland was constructed earlier this year, tested by us in October, and found to be excellent. A spartan cabin in the middle of nowhere is equipped with nine beverage antennas, each almost a kilometer in length. A bunch of New Zealand AM stations and a 10-watt highway advisory station from Alaska were among the highlights heard in Aihkiniemi.

Oct DXing from Assam, India

Hi, I am Prithwiraj Purkayastha from Jorhat (Coordinates: 26.75°N 94.22°E), Assam, India. I am a new Dxer and learning this fabulous electronic hobby for last seven years. I am using a Plhilips Analogue Four band Radio with a telescopic antinna for SW listening.

October is always a special month for me. Its on this beautiful month I came to this earth twenty nine years back. On this October itself I also revealed the great word of Shortwave Radio in 2003. So for making this year's October I have planned a OctoDXing and I was little bit successful too through some very interesting SW logs, QSL received and three interesting interviews with BBC (Bengali), VOA (Bengali) and IRIB R. Tehran (Hindi) services. I also ordered an ANJAN DTS 10 receiver from China for more interesting logs in future and to explore this wonderful world of SW Dxing.

Some of my Logs of October, 2010.

Radio buffs rediscover pastime on internet

B Pradeep Nair
They may not be forever emailing, facebooking or tweeting; but they are grateful to the internet. A whole generation that grew up on radio is rediscovering their lost pastime, of listening to faraway radio stations. Thanks to live online streaming, shortwave radio freaks are smiling again. They are bookmarking stations on web browsers and listening in while working on their laptops.
