AWR Grand Finale DX Contest

Ever since Adventist World Radio was inaugurated way back more than 40 years ago, listeners in many countries on all continents have looked forward to participating in the annual DX contest.    Our historical records show that the first listener contest was conducted by the fledgling new AWR back during the year 1972, just a few months after the official inauguration on October 1, 1971.

The longest series of annual DX contests began under the original Adventist World Radio in Asia, AWR-Asia in Poona India, and these were introduced just a few years later, in 1977.  Since then, this well established AWR DX program has transmigrated from Asia to the United States, and the name likewise has evolved into the now familiar "Wavescan".

Throughout all of these intervening years, the annual winner's list contains the names of well known international radio monitors living on all continents.  In addition, the long roster of regional winners over the years includes a host of names, international radio monitors living in up to a hundred different countries.  Any and all entrants have an equal possibility of winning one of the many awards that are available each year.

You are invited to make up a tabulated list of all of your AWR QSL cards, one only for each AWR shortwave site.  You may also include reception reports for any AWR shortwave site that you have not yet verified, up to a maximum of three additional sites.  The listing of each QSL card for each AWR site that you have verified should show the station name, location, country, frequency, date and a brief description of the card.  Here is a sample listing showing how to give the information:-

Please do not send a recording of your reception; we just need your honest reception report on paper.  All reception reports will be verified with a special contest endorsement.

E. Three Radio Cards

Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry.  These cards may be old or new, and they may be        QSL cards, reception report cards, or picture cards of radio stations, etc.  Not valid for this contest are amateur cards nor CB cards.

The awards for the 2016 AWR "Grand Finale DX Contest" will be similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of Jerome Berg's radio     history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2017 for each continental winner.  In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.

Each entry will receive the special postage stamp that commemorates the 200th anniversary of Indiana.

An additional ward is offered for an entry from Australia or New Zealand, a copy of Dr. Bruce Carty's colorfully prepared History of Radio Broadcasting in Australia.

All AWR reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card.  Please remember that it will take a period of many months, well into the new year 2017, to process all of the contest entries and reception reports, but each will in due course be processed.

As Adventist World Radio enters into its 43rd year of international radio broadcasting, we take pleasure in announcing our annual "Wavescan" DX contest, which comes to you under the title, "Rare, Unusual, Unique QSLs".  In short, you are invited to check your collection of QSL cards and letters for rare, unusual and unique QSLs from shortwave, mediumwave and communication stations throughout the world.  You are also invited to log AWR programming to Asia on shortwave, mediumwave or FM during the month of September 2014.

Here are the details of our 2014 "Rare, Unusual, Unique QSLs"  -  AWR "Focus on Asia" Annual DX Contest:-

  

A. Rare, Unique and Unusual QSL Cards and Letters

 

* You are invited to make a list of what you consider to be your rare, unique or unusual QSL cards or letters in your QSL collection.  Perhaps no one else in the world has a QSL verifying some transmissions that you have verified.

 

* Your list of QSLs can show any number of different rare, unique or unusual QSLs up to a total of 5 QSLs.

 

* Your QSLs may verify a wrong transmission channel or an emergency broadcast due to flood, fire, earthquake, turmoil etc, or a transmission from an emergency transmitter, or test broadcasts or first broadcast or last broadcast, unusual propagation, etc.

 

 * These QSLs can be from any shortwave broadcasting station or shortwave communication station or mediumwave station located in any country anywhere in the world.  Amateur QSLs nor CB QSLs are not valid for this contest.

  

B. Details of Rare, Unique and Unusual QSL Cards and Letters

 

* Please state very briefly, no more than one paragraph for each, why you consider each item in your list of QSLs is rare, unique or unusual.

 

* You are invited to provide a photocopy of each of the QSLs that are on your list in Part A. Preferably, these photocopies should be in color, though black & white copies may be acceptable.

  

C. AWR Reception Reports

 

* You are invited to prepare three reception reports for the broadcast on shortwave mediumwave or FM of any AWR Asian programming.  These broadcasts from Adventist  World Radio may be from shortwave, mediumwave or FM stations located anywhere in Asia or on nearby Asian islands; or AWR programming beamed into Asia on shortwave from other countries.

 

D. Adventist Photograph

 

* You are invited to visit a unit of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination in your country and take a photograph of it, preferably in color, though B&W can be acceptable, and submit one picture with your contest entry.

 

* The Adventist unit may be, for example a:-

 

- SW MW FM communication or amateur radio station, radio studio, TV station, TV studio

- Church building, church congregation, public meeting, or church event

- Administrative office or building

- University, high school, academy, elementary school, language school, kindergarten or day care

- Hospital, medical clinic, dental clinic, orphanage, nursing home, retirement center, etc

- Food factory, printing company, publishing house, etc

- Book shop, health food shop, restaurant, etc

- ADRA mobile emergency relief van, boat, airplane, office or project

Adventist World Radio welcomes reception reports from listeners in all countries.  Please note the following items of information:-

 

* Each reception report should contain the following items of information

   - Date

   - Time, preferably expressed in International Radio Time, equivalent to UTC

   - Frequency in kHz

   - Sufficient program details to verify that you actually heard the AWR programming

 * Reception reports by postal mail are preferred, though email is also acceptable.

 * Where possible, please enclose return postage in the form of currency notes in any international currency, or mint postage stamps.  Please note that IRC coupons are too expensive for you to buy, and they are no longer valid in the United States.

 

* Where possible, please enclose your address label.

 

* You will receive a full data QSL card, including location, through the postal system in response to your reception report.

 

* Several different QSL cards are available.

 

* The envelope will be affixed with regular postage stamps, not a postage label.

 

* AWR does not send out email QSLs.

 

* It is not necessary for you to send and resend the same reception report.  All reception reports that we receive are verified with a regular full data QSL card.

And now, here is the information you have been waiting to hear. In our program today, we present the results of the recent 2011 Wavescan DX contest that was conducted back during the month of June. The DX contest this year was organized to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Adventist World Radio, and it featured the listening and reporting of all of the stations that can be heard on one particular shortwave frequency, under the title "Choose a Channel" DX Contest. The history of Adventist World Radio goes way back to October 1, 1971, when AWR made its first broadcast on shortwave in a service originating out of Portugal and beamed towards various countries in Europe.
The awards for this year's contest are similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of the Jerry Berg radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2012 for each continental winner. In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.
You can remember that all AWR reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card. Please remember that it will take a period of many months, well into the new year 2012, to process all of the contest entries and reception reports, but each will in due course be processed.
There were two surprising facts exhibited in the contest entries this year. One was the magnificent quality of many of the top entries; and the huge number of reception reports included in this year's entries. One entrant submitted 63 reception reports, and two entrants both submitted 45 reception reports each.

AWR DX Program "Wavescan" - Annual DX Contest - 2010 "Station Profiles"

It's that time of the year again! Yes, we're talking about our big annual DX contest here in "Wavescan". The title for our big 2010 DX contest is "Station Profiles", and here are the details for all five parts in this year's contest:-

A. Five Station Profiles:

Make a list of five different radio stations for which you would like to have a "Station Profile" presented on air in a coming edition of "Wavescan". You may suggest five different radio stations, or the radio stations in five different cities, or in five different countries, or any combinations of these designations. These radio stations may still be on the air, or they may now be silent. You may choose only shortwave broadcasting stations, or shortwave communication stations that have been used also for broadcasting.

B. Five Paragraphs:

You are invited to write just one short paragraph about each of the five stations you have chosen in the above list, and state why you have chosen that particular station.

C. Five Photocopies:

You are invited to search your QSL collection, and where possible, provide a photocopy of a QSL from each of the five radio stations in your above list. These photocopies should be in color if possible, but black & white is also acceptable. If you do not have a QSL from any of the stations you select, then you should indicate the reason why you do not have a QSL; such as for example, the station is now silent, or you are unable to hear the station in your part of the world, or they do not verify reception reports, etc.

D. Three Reception Reports:

You are invited to send in at least three reception reports on any transmission from Adventist World Radio on any station, shortwave, mediumwave and FM.

E. Three Radio Cards:

Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry. Return postage in the form of currency notes in an international currency, or mint postage stamps, or IRC coupons would be welcome. Where possible, a self addressed return envelope, business size or half quarto size, would also be welcome. The awards for this year's contest will be similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of the Jerry Berg radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2011 for each continental winner. In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants. There will be special awards for listeners in Africa responding to this year's contest. You can remember that all reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card. Please remember that it will take a period of many months to process all of the reception reports, but each will in due course be verified. In addition, and over a period of time, it is our intent to present in our Wavescan DX program, many, and perhaps all, of the "Station Profiles" as submitted in this year's DX contest. When we present each of these specific "Station Profiles" in our "Wavescan" program, we will also call on-air the listener who made the suggestion. When the listener hears his name in the program, he can send in a reception report and receive a specially endorsed QSL card.

Wellenforum is holding it's 4th Mediumwave-Summer-Contest.

1. Contest Period:

The contest runs from Wednesday, 15.07.2009 (00.00 UTC) to Friday, 31.07.2009 (23.59 UTC).

2. BC Stations

During the contest period participants can score by listening to MW BC stations.Listening time has to be at least 10 minutes for each station.Valid contest frequencies are between 525 kHz and 1700 kHz.Verification should be done by adequate program details like a news headline or a music title.Please do not use phrases like music or news !

3. Conditions of Participation

The contest is open to all DXers, regardless of their membership in any DX club and/or wellenforum.

Logs can be made through the wellenforum-Online-Log facility, which will be available at
www.contest.wellenforum.de in due course.

Please note, that a registration is necessary to be granted access to the wellenforum-Online-Log-facility. You can also send in your logs via eMail to fwi@wellenforum.de.

4. Awards

Every participant will receive a participation certificate promptly after the contest has finished.This time we will not evaluate any individual score and ranking.

5. Diploma

On the occasion of the ITALY MEDITERRANEAN GAMES, every registered wellenforum-member has the chance to be awarded with a special Mediterranean Diploma .

To receive this diploma, participants have to log at least one station from every country adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea.

"Wavescan" DX Program to Continue from New Location

The final edition of AWR's DX program "Wavescan" produced in Singapore is scheduled for broadcast on May 31, 2009, with the usual scheduled repeats during the first few days into June. Beginning in the first week of June, "Wavescan" will be written and produced in the United States for broadcast worldwide. In the new arrangement, the scripts for "Wavescan" will be researched and written in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the program will be assembled and produced in the Miami, Florida, studios of shortwave station WRMI/Radio Miami International. QSL cards acknowledging the reception of "Wavescan" will be available from both WRMI and Adventist World Radio. At the end of May, AWR's Singapore office and studio will be transferred to nearby Batam Island, Indonesia. This move will achieve considerable cost savings for AWR. Many long-time listeners will remember that the original AWR DX program, "Radio Monitors International," was produced in the Poona (Pune), India, studios of Adventist World Radio and broadcast on the domestic and international shortwave services of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Beginning in 1984, North American coverage was achieved through the services of Jeff White and his original Radio Earth/Radio Discovery service. "Radio Monitors International" became "Wavescan," and Radio Earth/Radio Discovery became Radio Miami International/WRMI. The new presentations of "Wavescan" will be very similar to the earlier editions as produced in Singapore. Each edition will include a station profile on an important or a little-known shortwave station from a historical perspective. There will also be other features from the fascinating world of international radio broadcasting, as well as regular bulletins of DX news. It is intended that the regular DX bulletins from Japan, Bangladesh, Philippines and Australia will be included as usual in these new broadcasts of "Wavescan." Other radio entities are welcome to re-broadcast "Wavescan," archive the programs on Internet websites, and reprint items and articles from the scripts and archive the scripts, with the usual attribution to AWR "Wavescan" and to Radio Miami International/WRMI. As was announced in "Wavescan" earlier, the annual worldwide listener contest during the month of June will continue as planned. Listeners are invited to prepare a list and give details and photocopies of 5 QSLs from silent shortwave stations; to submit 3 reception reports on AWR transmissions; and, where possible, to submit 3 suitable radio cards to the "Wavescan" address in Indianapolis. Adventist World Radio would like to express appreciation to AWR assistant program director Rhoen Catolico for his splendid work on the production of "Wavescan" during the past three years and to wish him every success with his endeavors as he returns to his homeland in the Philippines. We would also like to express our appreciation to Jeff White at WRMI for mutual co-operation in the areas of international radio broadcasting over the past quarter century, and we are grateful for this new relationship in the production and distribution of the program in his station in Miami. Here are the rules :

1. Contest period:

From 21. Dec 2008 to 4. Jan 2009.

2. Stations

During the contest you have to receive BC stations on long- and medium wave.

3. Participation Conditions

Participation is free and independent from a listener club membership. Newcomers can also participate as well as medium wave specialists. Like the last wellenforum contest, participation is via an online form. You can find the form on http://www.contest.wavetalk.org/ . Please follow the registration hints. Every station has to be heard at least for 10 minutes.. Notes on the programme heard have to be logged as detailed as possible to really identify the station (no empty phrases like "music", "news" etc.).

4. Points

Every bc station log on long wave and medium wave is counting. Logs without a clear identification will count one third of the points that you can get for this station. Points for a log are depending on the CIRAF zone of the station. This is based on the publication "EDXC RADIO Countries" that we will provide.

Scoring scheme:
Station logged from the CIRAF zone of the place of reception 10 points
Station logged from a CIRAF zone bordering the zone were your place is 20 points
Station from the rest 30 points

Example:
Your place is in Germany. Your CIRAF zone is 28. All stations from this zone are 10 points worth. Stations from CIRAF zones bordering zone 28 are 20 points worth (bordering zones are 18, 27, 29, 37, 38 and 39). The rest is 30 points worth.

5. Award:
Every participant will receive a participation certificate showing individual score and ranking prompt after the contest has finished.

SWLs must log the complete QSO consisting of the call including the Serial Number and the second call. Incomplete QSOs do not count. Every station counts once per band and mode for the SWLs.

Wavescan Alphabet DX Contest

Adventist World Radio takes pleasure in announcing the results of our recent listener contest in our DX program, "Wavescan". Even though these days "Wavescan" is beamed mostly to listeners in Asia, yet there was a concentration of entries from listeners in Europe, the Americas, the South Pacific, and of course, from many countries in Asia itself.
The "Wavescan" DX contest this year invited listeners to make up a list of the QSLs in their collection that illustrate the 26 letters of the English alphabet, one QSL for each letter. Participants were also invited to provide copies of what they considered to be the best five in their list, and also to submit three reception reports on AWR radio transmissions, as well as three radio oriented cards. The world winner will receive a copy of Jerry Berg's first book, "On the Short Waves", and continental winners will receive a copy of either "Passport to World Band Radio" or "World Radio TV Handbook". In addition, curios and souvenirs will also be sent out to many of the entrants in appreciation for their participation.
And here is the information you are waiting for! The world winner for our big "Alphabet DX Contest, 2008" is: Gunter Jacob of Passau in Germany; and thank you, Gunter for your excellent entry. Those of you who have been following our contest results over the years will note that this is now the 3rd occasion in which Gunter has achieved the top honor as world winner in our international DX contest.

3rd Wellenforum Summer Contest 2008

1. Contest Period:
The contest runs from Tuesday, 15.07.2008 (00.00 UTC) to Thursday, 31.07.2008 (23.59 UTC).

2. BC Stations
Every MW log is given a value, each heard station gets one single value. Every station has to be heard at least for 10 minutes. Notes on the programme heard have to be logged as detailed as possible to really identify the station (no empty phrases like music , news etc.).

3. Conditions of Participation
The contest is free of charge and open to all DXers regardless of their membership in any DX club and their knowledge. Logs have to be made through the wellenforum-Online-Log facility which will be available at : http://www.contest.wavetalk.org

Please note, that a registration is necessary to be granted access to the Log-facility.

4. Scoring
Every station from the logger's country gets 10 points, every station from the logger's continent gets 20 points, and stations from other contintents than the logger's get 30 points.
