Please note that we are interrupting the regular flow of topics in Wavescan to present a special program honoring the fascinating historic story of the exotic Radio Andorra high in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain.  On August 7, Radio Andorra would have celebrated its 80th anniversary, if it were still on the air.  

This special edition of Wavescan was professionally produced by Christian Milling in Germany, it was edited for broadcast in Wavescan by Dr. Adrian Peterson in Indianapolis, and it was prepared for broadcast by Jeff White at Radio Miami International WRMI in Miami Florida.  Edition NWS 545 contains the Radio Andorra story, and it is scheduled for broadcast in the normal scheduling of Wavescan, beginning over this coming weekend.  You may check the availability of this special program in your part of the world by accessing the websites of the following international shortwave stations:-

Mystery Broadcast of AWR DX Program “Wavescan”

WINB Test Transmissions

At the present time, the American shortwave station WINB is conducting a lengthy series of test transmissions in the digital DRM mode from its new transmitter at Red Lion in Pennsylvania. According to Hans Johnson, Frequency Manager for WINB, these test transmissions are beamed to Europe and to North Africa.

The AWR international DX program "Wavescan" has been invited to participate in the WINB test transmissions and these special digital broadcasts are scheduled to be on the air during the month of September.  Reception reports on the reception of these DRM broadcasts will be most welcome and they can be addressed to both WINB in Pennsylvania and to the AWR DX program "Wavescan" in Indiana.

The schedule for the broadcasts of "Wavescan" over WINB indicates that this half hour DX program will be on the air twice each week, Monday and Friday, at 1630 UTC on 15670 kHz.  In addition, there will be another broadcast of "Wavescan" during the week in between the Monday and Friday, a Mystery Broadcast, on a day and at a time not announced in advance.

All reception reports addressed to "Wavescan" will be verified with a specially endorsed QSL card, and reception reports of the unannounced in-between Mystery Broadcasts will be honored additionally with a souvenir from AWR in Indiana.  Reception reports indicating reception in the digital DRM mode are preferred, though honest reception reports in the analog mode will also be appreciated.  The analog reports will at least give an indication to WINB of the coverage area of these test transmissions.

Multiple reception reports, each on a different day, will be verified individually with the specially endorsed QSL card.

All of the "Wavescan" broadcasts are scheduled for transmission on 15670 kHz and genuine reception reports from anywhere in the world will be most appreciated.  These may be sent by email, or by postal mail with an address label and return postage if possible.  Remember that IRC Coupons are now no longer valid in the United States.  Remember also that the postal address in Indiana has been "borrowed" temporarily and it is valid only in September and October.

Shortwave radio station WINB is owned and operated by World International broadcasters and it was inaugurated in October 1962 with a 50 kW Continental transmitter Model No 417B.  The original transmitter was rebuilt and taken into service again in 1997.

The international DX program "Wavescan" is a co-operative venture on the part of Adventist World Radio and KSDA Guam, Radio Miami International WRMI in Florida, Voice of Hope KVOH in California and Voice of Hope in Zambia Africa, and World Wide Christian Radio WWCR in Tennessee.

At last !  The Results of Last Years Wavescan DX Contest

We here at the AWR DX program "Wavescan" take pleasure in announcing today the list of winners for the big 2015 Annual DX Contest, "The World's Most Unusual DX Contest".  This contest took place during the months of October and November, and all entries were received at the Indianapolis address by the end of December.  You will remember that our big 2015 DX contest invited participants to provide information in five different areas:-

1. You were invited to design your own DX contest in any way and in whatever form you             choose.        

2. You were invited to describe how you have fulfilled the requirements of your own self-                 designed DX contest.

3. Please list what you consider is the best QSL that you have received since the 2014                       DX contest?

4. Provide three reception reports for the broadcast on shortwave, mediumwave or FM                       of any AWR programming in any part of the world.

5. Where possible, provide three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection.

We are grateful again for the large number of entries received this year from so many countries around the world, and we appreciate the time consuming effort that so many listeners exerted in preparing their excellent entries.  As always, we note that many entries were from new participants this year, and we are grateful also to those who have entered on previous occasions during the past 40 years of contesting.

As in all previous contests, there were many entries of particularly high quality, some even in a book style of presentation.  The QSL cards and color copies of QSL cards are appreciated, and the story behind so many of these interesting QSLs will be presented here in Wavescan over a long period of time, one each week.

And now, the name of the World Winner in our big 2015 listener contest: "Design Your Own DX Contest".  This year's winner presented a most unique procedure in order to obtain a QSL card.  He observed that some of the longwave chronohertz stations emit a signal that can be received by a specific type of clock, an Atomic Clock, if you please.  The signal from the radio station adjusts the readout of the time on the clock.  He will receive a book of his choice, one of the authoritative volumes on shortwave history written by the noted radio historian Jerome Berg of suburban Boston in the United States.

We might also add that the entry from Jose Roberto da Silva Cunha in Jardim Perola, Brazil, as mentioned above as the Continental Winner for South America, was judged to be a close runner up in second place in this year's contest, due to his splendid, colorful and neat presentation.    

Once again, we acknowledge with appreciation the many entries in this year's 2015 Design Your Own DX Contest.  Thank you for participating, and we trust that you enjoyed participating as much as we did in perusing all of your interesting entries.  All entries will be acknowledged through the post, and all reception reports will be verified, though it will take time, well into this New Year 2016, to process them all.

We invite you to enter our 2016 DX Contest, which will run during the month of August.  This will be the final Wavescan DX contest, and you are invited to make a list of your QSL cards from Adventist World Radio, one for each shortwave transmitter site.  How many AWR shortwave sites have you verified?  You will be given a temporary postal address for our 2016 DX contest in due course.  Full details will be announced quite soon.

AWR Wavescan QSL: Last week & first week

International news media are carrying the news regarding the transfer of WYFR, the large shortwave station in lower central Florida, to WRMI Radio Miami International in Miami in the United States, at the end of this month. Due to this remarkable radio development, the international DX program, "Wavescan", will interrupt the flow of its regular programming to honor the occasion. The final broadcasts of "Wavescan" over WRMI Miami will be on the air during the last complete week in the month of November, and during the first complete week in December, "Wavescan" will be aired for the first occasion over the large new WRMI which is located a little north of Lake Okeechobee in lower central Florida.

The DX program, "Wavescan" is written in Indianapolis by Dr. Adrian Peterson, DX editor for Adventist World Radio, and it has been produced over the past several years by Jeff White at WRMI Radio Miami International in Miami. This program is on the air from WRMI in Florida, KSDA on the island of Guam, and seasonally by several of the shortwave relay stations in the AWR network, and also over WWCR and WINB in the United States.

All reception reports to "Wavescan" for the last week in November will be QSLed with a special "Last Week" endorsement for WRMI Miami, and all reception reports to "Wavescan" during the first week in December will be QSLed with a "First Week" endorsement for the new WRMI at Okeechobee. These special endorsements will be applied to all QSL cards issued for these special editions of "Wavescan" as heard on any of these stations that carry the program, though, where possible direct broadcast from the old and the new WRMI would also be appreciated. "Wavescan" may also be heard via numerous electronic deliveries, including station websites and iPod deliveries.

Listeners are encouraged to send their reception reports for these broadcasts to the Wavescan address in Indianapolis with address label and return postage, and also to the station that is carrying the programming, and also to the address for the new WRMI. The last edition of "Wavescan" via the old WRMI will be a special tribute to this station, and the first broadcast from the new WRMI will honor this new development.

AWR Wavescan Special - Tribute to Ekala

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has announced that they plan to close their historic shortwave station located at Ekala, a dozen miles north of Colombo in Sri Lanka. In view of the close association of Adventist World Radio with SLBC and their Ekala shortwave station over a long period of time beginning back in 1951, we are planning to honor the occasion with a special edition of the AWR DX program Wavescan, under the title "Tribute to Ekala". We plan to broadcast this special edition of Wavescan under the old title from around 40 years ago, "Radio Monitors International". At this stage, the closure date for SLBC Ekala is not yet finally confirmed, though it is our intent to place this special program on the air in the regular scheduling of Wavescan to co-incide with their last week on the air. SLBC plans to transfer their shortwave planning to the ex-Deutsche Welle station located near Trincomalee on the east coast of the island.

A special one time only QSL card will be prepared, based on the early QSL cards issued in Poona India for the broadcasts from AWR-Asia and Radio Monitors International. All reception reports for this one particular edition of Wavescan-Radio Monitors International will be verified with this special card, and the reception reports can be for any of the broadcasts of this program over any station that carries the program. Postal mail reception reports are preferred, with return postage, though in some cases email reports will be verified.

"Wavescan" CALLING AFRICA !

"Focus on Africa"

During the entire coming year, 2013, programming in the AWR DX program, "Wavescan", will be concentrated upon the radio broadcasting scene on the continent of Africa, including nearby islands and the Middle East. Tentative planning for the scheduling of radio features includes a historic rundown of an African radio station, large or small, as the the main opening topic every 3rd week. As follow on topics in the weekly half hour program, many additional African features will be presented, including interviews and on-the-spot recordings made by the program producer, Jeff White of Radio Miami International WRMI in Florida.

All of the African information that will be presented on air in "Wavescan" throughout the year 2013 will be under the title, "Focus on Africa", and the purpose for this year long emphasis is to encourage

the development of international radio broadcasting and shortwave listening throughout the African arena. The international DX program, "Wavescan" is researched and written in Indianapolis and produced by Jeff White in the studios of shortwave WRMI in Miami.

We here at "Wavescan" always welcome reception reports from our listeners, and we receive listener mail from some 100 countries throughout the world. All reception reports are verified with our QSL

cards through the postal system, and of course, some form of return postage is always appreciated.

In particular, we would welcome reception reports from listeners living in continental Africa and nearby areas. The international DX program "Wavescan" is the current name for the original DX program, "Radio Monitors International" that was launched from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in 1975, as part of the shortwave scheduling of Adventist World Radio.

Special DRM broadcasts for Wavescan

The "Wavescan" DX program which is a joint production of NASB members Adventist World Radio and Radio Miami International, will be included in a new series of four DRM (digital) shortwave transmissions called "DRM Mix" sponsored by Spaceline in Bulgaria which will take place on 22, 23, 25 and 26 December, 2012. Wavescan will air from 17.00 - 17.30 UTC on those days. The frequency will be 9755 kHz from Bulgaria, covering Europe with 100 kW. Wavescan QSL cards are available for reception reports on these broadcasts. The program content will include information on the history of broadcasting in Bulgaria.

Contest Results: Our Big 2011 "Choose a Channel" DX Contest

And now, here is the information you have been waiting to hear. In our program today, we present the results of the recent 2011 Wavescan DX contest that was conducted back during the month of June. The DX contest this year was organized to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Adventist World Radio, and it featured the listening and reporting of all of the stations that can be heard on one particular shortwave frequency, under the title "Choose a Channel" DX Contest. The history of Adventist World Radio goes way back to October 1, 1971, when AWR made its first broadcast on shortwave in a service originating out of Portugal and beamed towards various countries in Europe.
The awards for this year's contest are similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of the Jerry Berg radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2012 for each continental winner. In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.
You can remember that all AWR reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card. Please remember that it will take a period of many months, well into the new year 2012, to process all of the contest entries and reception reports, but each will in due course be processed.
There were two surprising facts exhibited in the contest entries this year. One was the magnificent quality of many of the top entries; and the huge number of reception reports included in this year's entries. One entrant submitted 63 reception reports, and two entrants both submitted 45 reception reports each.
