WRMI Beefs Up, Big Time

by Paul McLane

Many international broadcasters have scaled back their shortwave operations, citing changes in consumer habits, costs of operation and the revolutionary changes brought by the Internet.

So I was interested to learn that the former WYFR in Okeechobee, Fla., described as the largest shortwave facility in the Western Hemisphere, would reopen.....

WYFR Facility to Return to Shortwave as WRMI

Legendary shortwave station WYFR in Okeechobee, Florida, which ceased transmissions on June 30, 2013, will resume broadcasting in December as a result of an agreement between Family Stations, Inc, and Radio Miami International, Inc.

According to the agreement, Family Radio will sell the WYFR facility t...o Radio Miami International. Family Radio programming for the Caribbean and South America will return to shortwave via the Okeechobee site, and Radio Miami's programming currently aired on WRMI in Miami will switch over to the Okeechobee facility. The station will also carry programs for other international broadcasters, including Pan American Broadcasting's Radio Africa network. A target date of December 1, 2013 has been set for the resumption of broadcasts. The current WRMI transmission site in Miami will be closed, and the WRMI call letters will be transferred to Okeechobee.

"We are very grateful to Family Radio for entrusting us with this magnificent station," said Jeff White, WRMI General Manager. "WYFR is an important part of the heritage of shortwave broadcasting, and we are very happy that it will continue to serve shortwave listeners around the world." The station first went on the air from Okeechobee in 1977, although the origins of the station and its predecessors go back to 1927. WYFR/WRMI is the largest shortwave station in the United States in number of transmitters and antennas. The facility is comprised of 13 transmitters -- twelve 100-kilowatt and one 50-kilowatt -- and 23 antennas beamed to all of the Americas, Europe and Africa.

White, who is also Secretary-Treasurer of the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters (NASB), said that "many people made this transition a reality, not the least of whom was our former
Secretary-Treasurer and current board member, Dan Elyea, who had been the WYFR Station Manager from the time it was built in the late 1970's until his recent retirement. Dan presented us to Family Radio Vice President Tom Evans. Tom and the Family Radio Board have given us their confidence, and we will do our best to keep this station going for many years to come."

"Wavescan" CALLING AFRICA !

"Focus on Africa"

During the entire coming year, 2013, programming in the AWR DX program, "Wavescan", will be concentrated upon the radio broadcasting scene on the continent of Africa, including nearby islands and the Middle East. Tentative planning for the scheduling of radio features includes a historic rundown of an African radio station, large or small, as the the main opening topic every 3rd week. As follow on topics in the weekly half hour program, many additional African features will be presented, including interviews and on-the-spot recordings made by the program producer, Jeff White of Radio Miami International WRMI in Florida.

All of the African information that will be presented on air in "Wavescan" throughout the year 2013 will be under the title, "Focus on Africa", and the purpose for this year long emphasis is to encourage
the development of international radio broadcasting and shortwave listening throughout the African arena. The international DX program, "Wavescan" is researched and written in Indianapolis and produced by Jeff White in the studios of shortwave WRMI in Miami.

We here at "Wavescan" always welcome reception reports from our listeners, and we receive listener mail from some 100 countries throughout the world. All reception reports are verified with our QSL
cards through the postal system, and of course, some form of return postage is always appreciated.

In particular, we would welcome reception reports from listeners living in continental Africa and nearby areas. The international DX program "Wavescan" is the current name for the original DX program, "Radio Monitors International" that was launched from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in 1975, as part of the shortwave scheduling of Adventist World Radio.

Special broadcast from DX Program "ANTENA DX" through shortwave & FM

During the month of August I was presenting the dx program called "Antena DX", which is originally produced by my collegue Víctor Gutierrez from studios of the Panamenian FM radio station "La Chispa Estereo 87.9 FM", in Tortí, and which is rebroadcast through Radio Thruth in Guatemala, as well as available on the web page "Programas DX" on www.programasdx.com Víctor asked me to produce it during the month of August and I wanted to do it. It has been a pleasure to me to produce a radio program for the first time. I have been shortwave listener since many years and I have contributed as DX correspondent for HCJB Equador and currently I produce a short-five-minutes radio program together with the International Dxers Friendship Club, CDXA Internacional. This short program is about history of radio.
I think everytime I listen radio or I produce something for radio I learn new things. Producing "Antena DX" has been a beautiful experience as well. And of course, it was a good desition I make to acept the invitation from Víctor to produce his radio program for this time. Thank you as well for the contributors of the program around the world and I also thank to the listeners.
Next Sunday the 04th will be my last appearence as presenter of the program. So, for this reason I want to send you a special QSL card as a souvenir because of the time I have been in front of the mic recording this.To receive this QSL card the rules are very simple: what you just have to do is tuning the program on La Chista Estereo 87.9 FM, if you live in Panama or through Radio Thruth on 4055 Khz. As you know or maybe you may not know, Radio Thruth broadcasts from the Central American Republic of Guatemala.
There will be two broadcasts from WRMI Radio Miami International on 9955 Khz. As you can see, there are many chances to tune the program and to receive this special QSL card as a souvenir to conmemorate the last Antena DX edtion from Venezuela.
It's very important you to know that there will be not e-QSL cards. Reports might correspond for shortwave or FM broadcasts only. Please don't send us reception reports through Internet. To send your reports, please endorse your envelopes by writing the postal address indicated below. If you want to send us International Repply Cupons, IRC, or any contribution into American dollars it will be very appreciate in the way to cover shipping costs. If you also want to send us cassette recordings or MP3 CD recordings about the reception of our broadcast in your local area we will be very happy to receive those.
To send your letters and reception reports you can write to the following postal address:
Antena DX
c/o Leonardo Santiago
Las Agujas, Pueblo Llano
Estado Mérida

"Wavescan" DX Program to Continue from New Location

The final edition of AWR's DX program "Wavescan" produced in Singapore is scheduled for broadcast on May 31, 2009, with the usual scheduled repeats during the first few days into June. Beginning in the first week of June, "Wavescan" will be written and produced in the United States for broadcast worldwide. In the new arrangement, the scripts for "Wavescan" will be researched and written in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the program will be assembled and produced in the Miami, Florida, studios of shortwave station WRMI/Radio Miami International. QSL cards acknowledging the reception of "Wavescan" will be available from both WRMI and Adventist World Radio. At the end of May, AWR's Singapore office and studio will be transferred to nearby Batam Island, Indonesia. This move will achieve considerable cost savings for AWR. Many long-time listeners will remember that the original AWR DX program, "Radio Monitors International," was produced in the Poona (Pune), India, studios of Adventist World Radio and broadcast on the domestic and international shortwave services of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Beginning in 1984, North American coverage was achieved through the services of Jeff White and his original Radio Earth/Radio Discovery service. "Radio Monitors International" became "Wavescan," and Radio Earth/Radio Discovery became Radio Miami International/WRMI. The new presentations of "Wavescan" will be very similar to the earlier editions as produced in Singapore. Each edition will include a station profile on an important or a little-known shortwave station from a historical perspective. There will also be other features from the fascinating world of international radio broadcasting, as well as regular bulletins of DX news. It is intended that the regular DX bulletins from Japan, Bangladesh, Philippines and Australia will be included as usual in these new broadcasts of "Wavescan." Other radio entities are welcome to re-broadcast "Wavescan," archive the programs on Internet websites, and reprint items and articles from the scripts and archive the scripts, with the usual attribution to AWR "Wavescan" and to Radio Miami International/WRMI. As was announced in "Wavescan" earlier, the annual worldwide listener contest during the month of June will continue as planned. Listeners are invited to prepare a list and give details and photocopies of 5 QSLs from silent shortwave stations; to submit 3 reception reports on AWR transmissions; and, where possible, to submit 3 suitable radio cards to the "Wavescan" address in Indianapolis. Adventist World Radio would like to express appreciation to AWR assistant program director Rhoen Catolico for his splendid work on the production of "Wavescan" during the past three years and to wish him every success with his endeavors as he returns to his homeland in the Philippines. We would also like to express our appreciation to Jeff White at WRMI for mutual co-operation in the areas of international radio broadcasting over the past quarter century, and we are grateful for this new relationship in the production and distribution of the program in his station in Miami. Jeff White is currently the president of NASB, the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters USA, in addition to his management responsibilities at WRMI. Adrian Peterson is DX editor for Adventist World Radio and a Board Member for NASB, the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters USA. The address is:
Adventist World Radio, Box 29235, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229 USA
