Adventist World Radio Makes Special QSL Offer

Adventist World Radio Makes Special QSL Offer

As a gesture of courtesy to the international radio world, Adventist World Radio is making a limited-time special-opportunity for shortwave monitors around the world to obtain postcard style QSL cards through the postal system.  Genuine reception reports on any AWR radio transmissions, on shortwave, mediumwave or FM will be most welcome.  These broadcasts may be according to current AWR scheduling, or from earlier times.  These postal reception reports should be addressed only to the AWR office in Indiana, and where possible return postage in an international currency should be included.  IRC Coupons are not valid in the United States.  Sending reception reports electronically is discouraged.  Each reception report will be verified with cards in the leftover stock of AWR QSL cards in a total of more than 200 different designs and they will be forwarded to the listener through the postal system.

Each postal reception report should be sent to the following address, and they should be posted no later than December 31, 2023:-

Mystery Broadcast of AWR DX Program “Wavescan”

WINB Test Transmissions

At the present time, the American shortwave station WINB is conducting a lengthy series of test transmissions in the digital DRM mode from its new transmitter at Red Lion in Pennsylvania. According to Hans Johnson, Frequency Manager for WINB, these test transmissions are beamed to Europe and to North Africa.

The AWR international DX program "Wavescan" has been invited to participate in the WINB test transmissions and these special digital broadcasts are scheduled to be on the air during the month of September.  Reception reports on the reception of these DRM broadcasts will be most welcome and they can be addressed to both WINB in Pennsylvania and to the AWR DX program "Wavescan" in Indiana.

The schedule for the broadcasts of "Wavescan" over WINB indicates that this half hour DX program will be on the air twice each week, Monday and Friday, at 1630 UTC on 15670 kHz.  In addition, there will be another broadcast of "Wavescan" during the week in between the Monday and Friday, a Mystery Broadcast, on a day and at a time not announced in advance.

All reception reports addressed to "Wavescan" will be verified with a specially endorsed QSL card, and reception reports of the unannounced in-between Mystery Broadcasts will be honored additionally with a souvenir from AWR in Indiana.  Reception reports indicating reception in the digital DRM mode are preferred, though honest reception reports in the analog mode will also be appreciated.  The analog reports will at least give an indication to WINB of the coverage area of these test transmissions.

Multiple reception reports, each on a different day, will be verified individually with the specially endorsed QSL card.

All of the "Wavescan" broadcasts are scheduled for transmission on 15670 kHz and genuine reception reports from anywhere in the world will be most appreciated.  These may be sent by email, or by postal mail with an address label and return postage if possible.  Remember that IRC Coupons are now no longer valid in the United States.  Remember also that the postal address in Indiana has been "borrowed" temporarily and it is valid only in September and October.

Shortwave radio station WINB is owned and operated by World International broadcasters and it was inaugurated in October 1962 with a 50 kW Continental transmitter Model No 417B.  The original transmitter was rebuilt and taken into service again in 1997.

The international DX program "Wavescan" is a co-operative venture on the part of Adventist World Radio and KSDA Guam, Radio Miami International WRMI in Florida, Voice of Hope KVOH in California and Voice of Hope in Zambia Africa, and World Wide Christian Radio WWCR in Tennessee.

Please note the following addresses for reception reports on the WINB test broadcasts:-

* By postal mail to WINB: Box 88, Red Lion, Pennsylvania 17356, USA

AWR Grand Finale DX Contest

Ever since Adventist World Radio was inaugurated way back more than 40 years ago, listeners in many countries on all continents have looked forward to participating in the annual DX contest.    Our historical records show that the first listener contest was conducted by the fledgling new AWR back during the year 1972, just a few months after the official inauguration on October 1, 1971.

The longest series of annual DX contests began under the original Adventist World Radio in Asia, AWR-Asia in Poona India, and these were introduced just a few years later, in 1977.  Since then, this well established AWR DX program has transmigrated from Asia to the United States, and the name likewise has evolved into the now familiar "Wavescan".

Throughout all of these intervening years, the annual winner's list contains the names of well known international radio monitors living on all continents.  In addition, the long roster of regional winners over the years includes a host of names, international radio monitors living in up to a hundred different countries.  Any and all entrants have an equal possibility of winning one of the many awards that are available each year.

As Adventist World Radio enters into its 45th year of international radio broadcasting, we take pleasure in announcing our annual "Wavescan" DX contest for the year 2016.  This year's contest is planned as the last ever contest from the AWR DX program "Wavescan" and it comes to you under the title,

In short, you are invited to make up a list of all of your AWR QSL cards, one only for each different AWR shortwave site.  "Grand Finale" Annual DX Contest:

AWR Grand Finale Annual DX Contest

"Grand Finale" Annual DX Contest

How Many AWR Shortwave Sites Have You Verified?

Ever since Adventist World Radio was inaugurated way back some 45 years ago, listeners in many countries on all continents have looked forward to participating in the annual DX contest.

Since then, this well established AWR DX program "Radio Monitors International" has transmigrated from Asia to the United States, and the name likewise has evolved into the now familiar "Wavescan".

As Adventist World Radio enters its 45th year of international radio broadcasting, we take pleasure in announcing our annual "Wavescan" DX contest for the year 2016.  This year's contest is planned as the last ever contest from the AWR DX program "Wavescan" and it comes to you under the title,

AWR 2015 Contest Results

The World's Most Unusual DX Contest

At last !  The Results of Last Years Wavescan DX Contest

We here at the AWR DX program "Wavescan" take pleasure in announcing today the list of winners for the big 2015 Annual DX Contest, "The World's Most Unusual DX Contest".  This contest took place during the months of October and November, and all entries were received at the Indianapolis address by the end of December.  You will remember that our big 2015 DX contest invited participants to provide information in five different areas:-

1. You were invited to design your own DX contest in any way and in whatever form you             choose.

2. You were invited to describe how you have fulfilled the requirements of your own self-                 designed DX contest.

3. Please list what you consider is the best QSL that you have received since the 2014                       DX contest?

4. Provide three reception reports for the broadcast on shortwave, mediumwave or FM                       of any AWR programming in any part of the world.

5. Where possible, provide three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection.

We are grateful again for the large number of entries received this year from so many countries around the world, and we appreciate the time consuming effort that so many listeners exerted in preparing their excellent entries.  As always, we note that many entries were from new participants this year, and we are grateful also to those who have entered on previous occasions during the past 40 years of contesting.

As in all previous contests, there were many entries of particularly high quality, some even in a book style of presentation.  The QSL cards and color copies of QSL cards are appreciated, and the story behind so many of these interesting QSLs will be presented here in Wavescan over a long period of time, one each week.

From a long list of entries, we have chosen the following listeners to whom awards will be sent in due course.

Here are the 2015 Continental Winners, each of whom will receive a copy of the 2016 edition of the "World Radio TV Handbook":-

Continental Winners

* Africa Middle East      Shaikh Jawahar           Major City         Mid East     Most precious QSLs
* Asia                             Harumasa Yokoi          Nagoya             Japan         One day listening
* Europe                         Rumen Pankov            Sofia                  Bulgaria      Countries that jam
* North America            Andrew Lisowski          Springfield VA   USA           Logging continents
* South America            Jose Roberto Cunha  Jardim Perola   Brazil            Five hard stations
* Pacific/Asian Islands  Eddy Probowo              Jakarta             Indonesia    Multiple reports

Among the many outstanding entries in this year's contest, neat, colorful and nicely prepared, we have chosen the following to receive the Award of Merit:-

Award of Merit

* India              Sheikh Shamim          Trivandrum     Focus on Time
* Israel             David Crystal              Gilboa              Relations listener & station
* Ukraine         Bondar Volodimir        Frankivsk        Monitoring different SW bands
* UAE              Dr. Avinash Cheekoth Al Ain               Letters of Alphabet
* USA              Patrick Hector              Woodland        First and last QSLs

And now, the name of the World Winner in our big 2015 listener contest: "Design Your Own DX Contest".  This year's winner presented a most unique procedure in order to obtain a QSL card.  He observed that some of the longwave chronohertz stations emit a signal that can be received by a specific type of clock, an Atomic Clock, if you please.  The signal from the radio station adjusts the readout of the time on the clock.  He will receive a book of his choice, one of the authoritative volumes on shortwave history written by the noted radio historian Jerome Berg of suburban Boston in the United States.

World Winner

The World Winner for 2015 is :- Mikio Kohara of Osaka in Japan

We might also add that the entry from Jose Roberto da Silva Cunha in Jardim Perola, Brazil, as mentioned above as the Continental Winner for South America, was judged to be a close runner up in second place in this year's contest, due to his splendid, colorful and neat presentation.

Once again, we acknowledge with appreciation the many entries in this year's 2015 Design Your Own DX Contest.  Thank you for participating, and we trust that you enjoyed participating as much as we did in perusing all of your interesting entries.  All entries will be acknowledged through the post, and all reception reports will be verified, though it will take time, well into this New Year 2016, to process them all.

We invite you to enter our 2016 DX Contest, which will run during the month of August.  This will be the final Wavescan DX contest, and you are invited to make a list of your QSL cards from Adventist World Radio, one for each shortwave transmitter site.  How many AWR shortwave sites have you verified?  You will be given a temporary postal address for our 2016 DX contest in due course.  Full details will be announced quite soon.

Adventist World Radio Offers Special QSL Stamp for Kigali Broadcasts

Adventist World Radio Offers Special QSL Stamp for Kigali Broadcasts

At the beginning of this current Transmission Period B14 October 6, 2014, Adventist World Radio began a relay service from the Deutsche Welle shortwave relay station near Kigali in Rwanda Africa.  The AWR relay via DW Kigali is on the air for a total of 2½ transmitter hours daily in three languages, French, Amharic & Fulfulde.  In one particular time block, two transmitters carry the programming in parallel.

However, Deutsche Welle has subsequently announced that they plan to close their African relay station at the end of this current Transmission Period B14 March 28, 2015 and then dismantle the station.  The last AWR broadcasts from DW Kigali will therefor also end at the same time.

For those who would like to receive a QSL card for these now short term broadcasts, AWR would welcome all reception reports from listeners in any part of the world.  Each reception report will be verified with a QSL card (not an Email QSL), and the envelope will be affixed with genuine postage stamps, not postal labels.  In addition, while supplies last, a special QSL stamp showing Kigali will be attached to the QSL card.

It is not necessary to send an off-air recording of your reception.  We just need your honest reception report on paper. Where possible, please enclose return postage in the form of currency notes in any international currency, or mint postage stamps. Please note that IRC coupons are too expensive for you to buy, and they are no longer valid in the United States.

Also please enclose your address label.

The only address for the special Kigali QSL stamp is the Indianapolis address at :

Adventist World Radio, Box 29235, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229, USA.

All reception reports, including all that have already been received, will be QSLed in due course.  However, please be patient with us as we already hold uncounted hundreds of reception reports still pending, and it may take us many months to process them all.

The current AWR website shows the following scheduling for the daily Kigali transmissions:-

0600 - 0630 UTC        15700 kHz      French
0600 - 0630                 17800              French
1700 - 1730                   9490              Amharic
1930 - 2000                 17800              Fulfulde
2000 - 2030                 17800              French
