AWR Grand Finale DX Contest

Ever since Adventist World Radio was inaugurated way back more than 40 years ago, listeners in many countries on all continents have looked forward to participating in the annual DX contest.    Our historical records show that the first listener contest was conducted by the fledgling new AWR back during the year 1972, just a few months after the official inauguration on October 1, 1971.

The longest series of annual DX contests began under the original Adventist World Radio in Asia, AWR-Asia in Poona India, and these were introduced just a few years later, in 1977.  Since then, this well established AWR DX program has transmigrated from Asia to the United States, and the name likewise has evolved into the now familiar "Wavescan".

Throughout all of these intervening years, the annual winner's list contains the names of well known international radio monitors living on all continents.  In addition, the long roster of regional winners over the years includes a host of names, international radio monitors living in up to a hundred different countries.  Any and all entrants have an equal possibility of winning one of the many awards that are available each year.

You are invited to make up a tabulated list of all of your AWR QSL cards, one only for each AWR shortwave site.  You may also include reception reports for any AWR shortwave site that you have not yet verified, up to a maximum of three additional sites.  The listing of each QSL card for each AWR site that you have verified should show the station name, location, country, frequency, date and a brief description of the card.  Here is a sample listing showing how to give the information:-

You are invited to prepare three reception reports for the broadcast on shortwave, mediumwave or FM of any AWR programming in any part of the world.  You may choose the international shortwave programing from Adventist World Radio, via KSDA Guam, or any of the shortwave relay stations that carry AWR programming, or any of the 1700 local mediumwave or FM stations in any part of the world that are affiliated with Adventist World Radio.  You may include up to three reception reports of AWR programing from shortwave sites that you have not yet verified.

Please do not send a recording of your reception; we just need your honest reception report on paper.  All reception reports will be verified with a special contest endorsement.

E. Three Radio Cards

Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry.  These cards may be old or new, and they may be        QSL cards, reception report cards, or picture cards of radio stations, etc.  Not valid for this contest are amateur cards nor CB cards.

The awards for the 2016 AWR "Grand Finale DX Contest" will be similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of Jerome Berg's radio     history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2017 for each continental winner.  In addition, there will be other special awards as well as AWR souvenirs and radio curios for many participants.

Each entry will receive the special postage stamp that commemorates the 200th anniversary of Indiana.

An additional ward is offered for an entry from Australia or New Zealand, a copy of Dr. Bruce Carty's colorfully prepared History of Radio Broadcasting in Australia.

All AWR reception reports will be verified with a specially endorsed AWR QSL card.  Please remember that it will take a period of many months, well into the new year 2017, to process all of the contest entries and reception reports, but each will in due course be processed.

The World's Most Unusual DX Contest

The time has come, the event you are waiting for has arrived! The new month of October is the official period for our big 2015 Wavescan DX contest. This year, we invite you to participate in The World's Most Unusual DX Contest, and this time you may design your own contest details. Read on for this years requirements.

Awards

The awards for the 2015 AWR The World's Most Unusual DX Contest will be similar to all previous contests, with the addition of several extra awards.

* Every entry will receive a full size copy of two historic American mediumwave QSL cards dating back to the early 1920s.

* Four entries will receive a special numbered QSL card featuring Thomas Kincade art in color showing twin radio towers, the only Kincade painting that depicts a radio station.

* All AWR reception reports will be verified with specially endorsed AWR QSL cards, and two new cards are now available.

* Additional AWR souvenirs, radio curios, Christmas card, AWR Magazine and small keepsakes.

* One entry from Australia and New Zealand will receive a copy of the new 5th edition of Dr. Bruce Carty's remarkable and readable book Australian Radio History. This large format volume, in full colour throughout, presents almost 100 pages of fascinating information about every known mediumwave station that ever took to the air in Australia during the past almost 100 years, beginning in 1918.

* Each continental winner will receive a copy of the 2016 edition of the World Radio TV Handbook.

* The World Winner will receive a copy of one of Jerome Berg's remarkable shortwave radio history books. The winner may choose which of the four thick volumes he would like to receive.

A. The World's Most Unusual DX Contest: Description

* You are invited to design your own DX contest in any way and in any form you consider is best. Your self-designed DX contest may be based upon any aspect of radio associated in some way with shortwave or mediumwave broadcasting, such as for example: Listening, monitoring, collecting QSLs, programming, script writing, radio history, current radio events, radio in the future, large radio stations, little radio stations, rare stations, distant stations, local stations, silent stations, visiting radio stations, radio magazines, radio receivers, personal radio memories, recording for           broadcast an so on.

* Your self-designed DX contest may be in any form you desire, and it may be ambitious and complicated, or it may be simple and quite easy, in whatever way you consider is most appropriate.

* You should then describe in a paragraph or two, the details of your own self-designed QSL contest.

* Not valid for this contest are amateur nor CB radio stations.

B. World's Most Unusual DX Contest: Fulfillment

* Please demonstrate the way you have fulfilled the requirements for your own self-designed DX contest, in a brief paragraph or two.

C. Your Best QSL since the 2014 DX Contest

* What is the best QSL that you have received since the 2014 DX contest? Please provide details and a photocopy, in colour if possible.

D. AWR Reception Reports

* You are invited to prepare three reception reports for the broadcast on short wave, medium wave or FM of any AWR programming in any part of the world. You may choose     the international shortwave programing from Adventist World Radio, via KSDA Guam; or any of the shortwave relay stations that carry AWR programming; or any of the 1,700 local medium wave or FM stations in any part of the world that are affiliated with Adventist World Radio.

As Adventist World Radio enters into its 43rd year of international radio broadcasting, we take pleasure in announcing our annual "Wavescan" DX contest, which comes to you under the title, "Rare, Unusual, Unique QSLs".  In short, you are invited to check your collection of QSL cards and letters for rare, unusual and unique QSLs from shortwave, mediumwave and communication stations throughout the world.  You are also invited to log AWR programming to Asia on shortwave, mediumwave or FM during the month of September 2014.

Here are the details of our 2014 "Rare, Unusual, Unique QSLs"  -  AWR "Focus on Asia" Annual DX Contest:-

  

A. Rare, Unique and Unusual QSL Cards and Letters

 

* You are invited to make a list of what you consider to be your rare, unique or unusual QSL cards or letters in your QSL collection.  Perhaps no one else in the world has a QSL verifying some transmissions that you have verified.

 

* Your list of QSLs can show any number of different rare, unique or unusual QSLs up to a total of 5 QSLs.

 

* Your QSLs may verify a wrong transmission channel or an emergency broadcast due to flood, fire, earthquake, turmoil etc, or a transmission from an emergency transmitter, or test broadcasts or first broadcast or last broadcast, unusual propagation, etc.

 

 * These QSLs can be from any shortwave broadcasting station or shortwave communication station or mediumwave station located in any country anywhere in the world.  Amateur QSLs nor CB QSLs are not valid for this contest.

  

B. Details of Rare, Unique and Unusual QSL Cards and Letters

 

* Please state very briefly, no more than one paragraph for each, why you consider each item in your list of QSLs is rare, unique or unusual.

 

* You are invited to provide a photocopy of each of the QSLs that are on your list in Part A. Preferably, these photocopies should be in color, though black & white copies may be acceptable.

  

C. AWR Reception Reports

 

* You are invited to prepare three reception reports for the broadcast on shortwave mediumwave or FM of any AWR Asian programming.  These broadcasts from Adventist  World Radio may be from shortwave, mediumwave or FM stations located anywhere in Asia or on nearby Asian islands; or AWR programming beamed into Asia on shortwave from other countries.

 

D. Adventist Photograph

 

* You are invited to visit a unit of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination in your country and take a photograph of it, preferably in color, though B&W can be acceptable, and submit one picture with your contest entry.

 

* The Adventist unit may be, for example a:-

 

- SW MW FM communication or amateur radio station, radio studio, TV station, TV studio

- Church building, church congregation, public meeting, or church event

- Administrative office or building

- University, high school, academy, elementary school, language school, kindergarten or day care

- Hospital, medical clinic, dental clinic, orphanage, nursing home, retirement center, etc

- Food factory, printing company, publishing house, etc

- Book shop, health food shop, restaurant, etc

- ADRA mobile emergency relief van, boat, airplane, office or project

Adventist World Radio welcomes reception reports from listeners in all countries.  Please note the following items of information:-

 

* Each reception report should contain the following items of information

   - Date

   - Time, preferably expressed in International Radio Time, equivalent to UTC

   - Frequency in kHz

   - Sufficient program details to verify that you actually heard the AWR programming

 * Reception reports by postal mail are preferred, though email is also acceptable.

 * Where possible, please enclose return postage in the form of currency notes in any international currency, or mint postage stamps.  Please note that IRC coupons are too expensive for you to buy, and they are no longer valid in the United States.

 

* Where possible, please enclose your address label.

 

* You will receive a full data QSL card, including location, through the postal system in response to your reception report.

 

* Several different QSL cards are available.

 

* The envelope will be affixed with regular postage stamps, not a postage label.

 

* AWR does not send out email QSLs.

 

* It is not necessary for you to send and resend the same reception report.  All reception reports that we receive are verified with a regular full data QSL card.

 

* At times, there may be a delay before you receive your AWR QSL card.  This is due to the large inflow of reception reports we receive from listeners in so many different countries.

This is what you have been waiting for, the results of our big AWR 2012 "Listen to AWR" DX Contest. Here are the details. You will remember that you were invited to participate in 5 different areas:-

Part A. Listen to as many shortwave locations in use by Adventist World Radio as possible during the month of July 2012.

Part B. Prepare just one reception report for any AWR transmission from each AWR transmitter site in any country that you were able to log during the month of July 2012.

Part C. Provide a photocopy of a QSL that you already hold in your collection from any of the AWR shortwave stations that you have heard, during the past five years only.

Part D. Submit three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection.

Part E. Post your entry with all items to Adventist World Radio in Indianapolis.

Contest Results: Our Big 2011 "Choose a Channel" DX Contest

And now, here is the information you have been waiting to hear. In our program today, we present the results of the recent 2011 Wavescan DX contest that was conducted back during the month of June. The DX contest this year was organized to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Adventist World Radio, and it featured the listening and reporting of all of the stations that can be heard on one particular shortwave frequency, under the title "Choose a Channel" DX Contest. The history of Adventist World Radio goes way back to October 1, 1971, when AWR made its first broadcast on shortwave in a service originating out of Portugal and beamed towards various countries in Europe.
The awards for this year's contest are similar to all previous contests. There will be a special award for the world winner, one of the Jerry Berg radio history books; and World Radio TV Handbook 2012 for each continental winner. There were two surprising facts exhibited in the contest entries this year. One was the magnificent quality of many of the top entries; and the huge number of reception reports included in this year's entries. One entrant submitted 63 reception reports, and two entrants both submitted 45 reception reports each.

"Choose a Channel" - AWR 40th Anniversary DX Contest

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Adventist World Radio, our DX program "Wavescan" is conducting a big worldwide DX contest, "Choose a Channel". It was back on October 1, 1971, that AWR made its first broadcast on shortwave in a service originating out of Portugal and beamed towards various countries in Europe.

Here are the details of our 2011 "Choose a Channel" DX Contest:-

A. Choose a Channel
We invite you to choose any shortwave channel, just one channel, anywhere in the world upon which Adventist World Radio is broadcasting, during the month of June 2011.

B. Prepare Reception Reports
You are invited to listen to the shortwave channel that you have chosen at any time, day and/or night, during the month of June 2011, and see how many different stations, including Adventist World Radio, that you can hear on that one specific channel. You are invited to prepare a standard reception report for each station, one sheet of paper for each station.

C. Photocopies
You are invited to search your QSL collection, and where possible, provide a photocopy of a QSL that you already hold in your collection from each of the shortwave stations that you hear on that one channel. These photocopies should be in color if possible, but black & white is also acceptable. If you do not already have a QSL from any of the stations you select, then you should state so in your contest entry.

D. Three Radio Cards
Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry. These cards may be old or new, and they may be QSL cards, reception report cards, or picture cards of radio stations, etc. (Not valid for this contest are amateur cards nor CB cards.)

E. Assemble Your Contest Entry
Post your entry with all items to Adventist World Radio in Indianapolis, remembering that the total number of stations you hear on the channel, and neatness and preparation, will all feature in the judging procedure. Remember also, that we will then post your reception reports to the other shortwave stations involved, requesting them to issue QSL cards to you in response.

AWR DX Program "Wavescan" - Annual DX Contest - 2010 "Station Profiles"

It's that time of the year again! Yes, we're talking about our big annual DX contest here in "Wavescan". The title for our big 2010 DX contest is "Station Profiles", and here are the details for all five parts in this year's contest:-

A. Five Station Profiles:

Make a list of five different radio stations for which you would like to have a "Station Profile" presented on air in a coming edition of "Wavescan". You may suggest five different radio stations, or the radio stations in five different cities, or in five different countries, or any combinations of these designations. These radio stations may still be on the air, or they may now be silent. You may choose only shortwave broadcasting stations, or shortwave communication stations that have been used also for broadcasting.

B. Five Paragraphs:

You are invited to write just one short paragraph about each of the five stations you have chosen in the above list, and state why you have chosen that particular station.

C. Five Photocopies:

You are invited to search your QSL collection, and where possible, provide a photocopy of a QSL from each of the five radio stations in your above list. These photocopies should be in color if possible, but black & white is also acceptable. If you do not have a QSL from any of the stations you select, then you should indicate the reason why you do not have a QSL; such as for example, the station is now silent, or you are unable to hear the station in your part of the world, or they do not verify reception reports, etc.

D. Three Reception Reports:

You are invited to send in at least three reception reports on any transmission from Adventist World Radio on any station, shortwave, mediumwave and FM.

E. Three Radio Cards:

Where possible, you are invited to include three radio cards for the Indianapolis Heritage Collection with your contest entry. These cards may be old or new, and they may be QSL cards, reception report cards, or picture cards of radio stations, etc. (Not valid for this contest are amateur cards nor CB cards.)

When the listener hears his name in the program, he can send in a reception report and receive a specially endorsed QSL card.

In response to numerous requests from a multitude of listeners in many different countries throughout the world, Adventist World Radio is pleased to announce the re-introduction of our popular DX contests in association with our DX program, “Wavescan”. It is planned that the DX contest for this year will be conducted during the month of April and it will be staged under the title, “QSL Alphabet DX Contest”.
In our 2008 DX contest, listeners are invited to search their own personal QSL collections and to choose 26 QSLs, one for each letter in the English alphabet. Listeners are also invited to submit at least 3 reception reports on AWR transmissions, and to provide at least 3 radio cards. Here are the full details for the four parts in this year’s big DX contest.

* PART A: Alphabet QSL List
Search your own personal collection of QSL cards and identify 26 QSLs, (preferably QSL cards, though QSL letters will also qualify), with each QSL representing the 26 consecutive letters in the English alphabet. These QSLs, all in your own personal collection, should confirm the reception of broadcasts from radio stations on shortwave, mediumwave, longwave, FM, TV and utility communications, but not amateur nor CB. For example, you can choose one QSL to represent the letter A, and it could be a QSL from Austria, or Australia, or Argentina, or Ahmedabad in India, or ABC Radio, etc, etc. Representing the letter B, you could choose for example, BBC, or Belgium, or Berlin, or 2BL, or Radio Butterworth, etc. And so on down through each letter of the alphabet. For the letter X for example, you could choose, CFRX, or XEW, or 3XY, etc; and for the letter Z, you could choose Zambia, or Zimbabwe, or 2ZB, or Zed Radio, etc. You should then make up a tabulated list of the 26 QSLs that qualify, giving the letters of the alphabet, the radio station, the station location, the year of the QSL, and a brief description. (Remember, in Part A, it is not necessary for you to send the QSLs to the AWR office, just your tabulated list.) Here is a sample for the tabulated list of QSLs:-

Where possible submit at least 3 radio related postcards for the Indianapolis Historic Collection, old or new, and these can be picture cards, text cards, QSL cards, etc. (Not valid are amateur QSL cards nor CB QSL cards.)
