Voice of Vietnam announces new contest

"What do you know about Vietnam?"

2010 will see numerous celebrations held across Vietnam. These include the country's 65th national day, the 80th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 120th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday, the 35th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification and the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi. This year Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) will also mark its 65th anniversary. To mark the occasion, VOV will launch a writing contest called "What do you know about Vietnam?" for all its listeners overseas and the Vietnamese community abroad.

- First prize will be a free week-long trip to Vietnam

- Second prize is a free 5-day trip to Vietnam

- Third prize is a free 4-day trip to Vietnam

There will also be 10 consolation prizes, each equivalent to VND1 million or US$60.

The 5 questions will be:

01. Name Vietnam's outstanding achievements in 2009 in areas such as economics, diplomacy, social welfare and poverty reduction.

02. When Vietnam took up its position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the 2008-2009 term, what contributions did it make to the UN Security Council, especially during the two months the country chaired the council?

03. How many sites and art forms in Vietnam have been recognized by UNESCO as tangible and intangible heritages of humanity and what are they?

04. In 2010, Hanoi will celebrate its 1000th anniversary and the 11 years since UNESCO recognized it as a city for peace. What do you know about Hanoi and what do you think are the factors that helped Hanoi to win the title "the city for peace"?

2010 HUNTING LIONS IN THE AIR CONTEST

1. ANNOUNCEMENT
The 39th Annual Hunting Lions in the Air contest will take place on the weekend of January 9th and 10th, 2010.

2. OBJECTIVE
"To create and foster a spirit of International understanding and cooperation" among Radio Amateurs (Hams) and Lions through worldwide radio communication and internet.. The contest is to commemorate the birthday of the founder of Lionism, Melvin Jones, born at Ft. Thomas, Arizona USA on January 13, 1879.

3. CONTEST PERIOD
The contest period will be 48 hours and will run from midnight UTC Friday/Saturday to midnight UTC Sunday/Monday. UTC = Universal Time Co-Ordinate (Zulu Time)

4. CLASSES AND CATEGORIES
The contest is open to all appropriately licensed Amateur (Ham) Radio Licencees, Short Wave Listeners (SWLs) and Internet Users as follows:
Class 1 Contestants are Amateur (Ham) Radio Licencees who are also current members of Lions Club (Leo and Lioness Club included) - Individuals
Class 2 contestants are (Ham) radio amateurs operating on behalf of a Lions, Lioness or Leo Club and who are not members of Lions, Leo or Lioness Clubs
Class 3 contestants are not Amateur (Ham) Radio or SWL Licencees but are current members of Lions / Leo / Lioness Club who are taking part on internet using different chat utilities as described separately

The following categories will be permitted in each class:
A Single Operator, All Bands, Single Transmitter,
B Multi Operator, All Bands, Single Transmitter,
C Licenced Short Wave Listener (SWL)
D Internet user

5. BANDS, MODES AND CONTACTS
BANDS: 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters as permitted by respective country of the contestant.
MODE: SSB, CW, ECHOLINK AND OTHER DIGITAL MODES Please note that this is a single competition and that there will not be separate places for the other modes.
CONTACTS: No duplicate contacts with same station and Lions Club is allowed, irrespective of bands, modes, class or category of station.

6. CALL
The SSB call should be "CQ Hunting Lions on the Air" or "CQ Hunting Lions" and the CW/Digital/Internet call be "CQ LIONS".

7. EXCHANGE
Transmit RS(T) plus a serial number. Amateur (Ham) Radio licencees operating on behalf of a Lions, Leo or Lioness Club must transmit the operator's name, Lions Club Name, Number and Lions District Number and Web/Email Address if any, Where as the Internet user except for RST all other details as above should be logged

8. QSO POINTS
One (1) point - each QSO with Lions Club Member or Lions Club in Category 1
Five (5) extra points - each new country where contact is made (excluding the country of the contestant)
Twenty-five (25) extra points - for contacts made with VU2LCI (Not for Indian Stations to remove the ease of QSO Points)

SWL's will score one point for each Lions Club Station heard exchanging reports and additional 5 points for an exchange between two stations of different unique countries. (Example If SWL is from India and he logs South Africa and India, South Africa and Sri Lanka, South Africa with New Zealand Additional 5 points is for only 3 countries and not 4)

9. Additional Bonus Points for Many Lion Hams of same club If Amateur (Ham) Radio Club Station owned by Lions Club with its own callsign additional 10 points for every Lion Ham valid member of the same Lions Club.

10. FINAL SCORE
To obtain the final score, multiply the "QSO points" by "the number of different Clubs worked".

11. LOGS
The following details are to be logged:
Date, Time (UTC), RST Sent and Received, the Amateur Station worked and Band. Additionally, if contact is made with a Lion, Leo or Lioness Club (Class 1) , the Operator's name, Club name, Number, and Lions District number, Email/Web address (if any) of the station contacted must be included on the station log sheet.

SWL logs should, in addition to the above, include the call signs of both stations heard and the sent and received exchanges of each station. This information should be recorded once only for each QSO heard Including the Lions Club details as above Date, Time (UTC), RST Sent and Received, the Amateur Station worked and Band. Additionally, if contact is made with a Lion, Leo or Lioness Club (Class ), the Operator's name, Club name, Number, and Lions District number, Email/Web address (if any) of the Lions Club on the other side of the contact.

Contest Logs can be sent by email to lions@vsnl.net or by Floppy 3.5, Compact Disk to the Contest Manager. Files may be in Excel, or in ASCII format with one QSO on every new line. Fields separated by commas or delimiters, The information shall be set out and tabulated in the same format as the official Log (see appendices). Each QSO must be terminated by a carriage return. Only MS-DOS compatible disks will be accepted. However Three (3) International Reply Coupon IRCs have to be sent for the logs to be compiled before results are announced and for receiving participation certificates - Indian Hams to send sufficient stamps for registered Speed Post.

NB! A written summary sheet must accompany the disk showing all required scoring information as well as your name, postal address, FAX number and/or email where you can be reached. As email is rapidly becoming the most convenient mode of communication, this mode is preferred, however do not forget to send 3 IRCs before last date.

12. DISQUALIFICATION
Logs that do not comply with the foregoing requirements will not be considered and will be rejected. Radio amateurs are expected to operate within the rules of their respective licenses and unsportsmanlike activity is to be discouraged. Actions and decisions of the Contest Committee are official and final.

13. DEADLINE
All logs must be mailed to reach the co-coordinator and envelopes must be date stamped no later than 28 February along with 3 New Format International Reply Coupon (IRC)

Here are the details for 5th wellenforum Christmas Contest :

1. Contest period
From 21. Dec 2009 (00.00 UTC) until 3. Jan 2010 (23.59 UTC) wellenforum is presenting the 5th wellenforum Christmas Contest.

2. Stations
During the contest bc stations on long- and mediumwave should be logged.

3. Participation Conditions
Participation is free and irrespective of any listener's club membership. Newcomers as well as medium wave specialists can participate. Every station has to be heard at least for 10 minutes. Notes on the programme heard have to be logged as detailed as possible to really identify the station (no empty phrases like "music", "news" etc.).

4. Scoring
Every bc station heard on longwave and mediumwave can be logged.
Logs without a clear identification will be awarded only one third of the points achievable for this station. Points for a certain log are depending on the CIRAF zone of the particular station. The CIRAF zones are based on the publication "EDXC RADIO Countries" that we will provide together with this invitation.

Scoring scheme:

Station logged from the same CIRAF zone as the place of reception - 10 points Station logged from a CIRAF zone bordering the zone containing the place of reception - 20 points All other stations - 30 points

Example:
Your place of reception (QTH) is in Germany - therefore your CIRAF zone is 28. All stations from this zone are worth 10 points. Logs from CIRAF zones bordering zone 28 are worth 20 points. In this case bordering zones are 18, 27, 29, 37, 38 and 39. Stations from any other CIRAF zone are worth 30 points.

5. Sending your logs

Wellenforum is holding it's 4th Mediumwave-Summer-Contest.

1. Contest Period:

The contest runs from Wednesday, 15.07.2009 (00.00 UTC) to Friday, 31.07.2009 (23.59 UTC).

2. BC Stations

During the contest period participants can score by listening to MW BC stations.Listening time has to be at least 10 minutes for each station.Valid contest frequencies are between 525 kHz and 1700 kHz.Verification should be done by adequate program details like a news headline or a music title.Please do not use phrases like music or news !

3. Conditions of Participation

The contest is open to all DXers, regardless of their membership in any DX club and/or wellenforum.

Logs can be made through the wellenforum-Online-Log facility, which will be available at
www.contest.wellenforum.de in due course.

AWR 2008 QSL ALPHABET DX CONTEST

In response to numerous requests from a multitude of listeners in many different countries throughout the world, Adventist World Radio is pleased to announce the re-introduction of our popular DX contests in association with our DX program, “Wavescan”. It is planned that the DX contest for this year will be conducted during the month of April and it will be staged under the title, “QSL Alphabet DX Contest”.
In our 2008 DX contest, listeners are invited to search their own personal QSL collections and to choose 26 QSLs, one for each letter in the English alphabet. Listeners are also invited to submit at least 3 reception reports on AWR transmissions, and to provide at least 3 radio cards. Here are the full details for the four parts in this year’s big DX contest.

* PART A: Alphabet QSL List
Search your own personal collection of QSL cards and identify 26 QSLs, (preferably QSL cards, though QSL letters will also qualify), with each QSL representing the 26 consecutive letters in the English alphabet. These QSLs, all in your own personal collection, should confirm the reception of broadcasts from radio stations on shortwave, mediumwave, longwave, FM, TV and utility communications, but not amateur nor CB. For example, you can choose one QSL to represent the letter A, and it could be a QSL from Austria, or Australia, or Argentina, or Ahmedabad in India, or ABC Radio, etc, etc. Representing the letter B, you could choose for example, BBC, or Belgium, or Berlin, or 2BL, or Radio Butterworth, etc. And so on down through each letter of the alphabet. For the letter X for example, you could choose, CFRX, or XEW, or 3XY, etc; and for the letter Z, you could choose Zambia, or Zimbabwe, or 2ZB, or Zed Radio, etc. You should then make up a tabulated list of the 26 QSLs that qualify, giving the letters of the alphabet, the radio station, the station location, the year of the QSL, and a brief description. (Remember, in Part A, it is not necessary for you to send the QSLs to the AWR office, just your tabulated list.) Here is a sample for the tabulated list of QSLs:-

Submit at least 3 reception reports on any AWR transmissions from any location in any mode.

* PART D: Submit 3 Radio Cards
Where possible submit at least 3 radio related postcards for the Indianapolis Historic Collection, old or new, and these can be picture cards, text cards, QSL cards, etc. (Not valid are amateur QSL cards nor CB QSL cards.)

*1. All entries must be sent by post and they should be postmarked during the month of April and received in Indianapolis by the end of May. In some cases, early entries will be accepted. Late entries will not qualify for the awards, but the reception reports will be verified with the special contest endorsement. 3. Conditions of Participation
The contest is free of charge and open to all DXers regardless
of their membership in any DX club and their knowledge.
Logs have to be made through the wellenforum-Online-Log facility
which will be available at www.wellenforum.de in due course.
Please note, that a registration is necessary to be granted access
to the Log-facility.
Every station has to be heard at least for 10 minutes. Notes on the
programme heard have to be logged as detailed as possible to really
identify the station (no empty phrases like “music”, “news” etc.).
4. Scoring
Each broadcast region (please note the specialty for UK) will score
only once.
Each broadcast region receives a basic score of 500 points divided
by the number of logs for this region.
This individual score will be round up to the nearest full number.
There will be a maximum score of 50 points per log.
Ambiguous logs without a definite identification will receive only
1/3 of the full score.
Example: Faroe Is. was logged 20 times = 500 / 20 = 25 points per
participant Madeira was logged 2 times = 500 / 2 = 250 points = 50
points per participant

5. Awards
Every participant will receive a participation certificate prompt
after the contest has finished showing individual score and ranking.
In addition every participant will receive a special diploma listing
those individually logged broadcast regions that have been confirmed
by the contest management.
