DRM India Timeline

DRM India Timeline

How long does it take to introduce a new technology? Years and years is the answer. With the success of DRM in India we have often been asked how it all began, who drove the implementation and where we are. This is how the idea of a DRM Indian Timeline was born and you can have a first glance of it here.

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) continues strong presence at BES Expo 2016 in New Delhi

The DRM Consortium, its members and partners, will have another strong presence at the 22nd international BES (Broadcasting Engineering Society) conference and exhibition on terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, taking place in New Delhi, India, 4-6 February 2016.  Key members Ampegon, Communication Systems INC, Fraunhofer IIS, Nautel, NXP and RFmondial will be in attendance.

As DRM digital radio starts to become a reality in India with 75% of DRM installations now on air and an Indian-made receiver in the market, under the banner "Digital Radio for All" visitors will be able to experience the DRM sound at the Nautel/Comcon stand. At the same time we are looking forward to receiving excellent audio quality and extra service form regular AIR (All India Radio) services to be shown on fixed and mobile receivers.

According to Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Consortium Chairman: "DRM transmissions will offer the majority of the Indian population improved audio quality similar to FM but across much wider areas, multi-lingual text news, improved service reliability, diversified content and many additional features. We are proud to support the BES event and this year our presentations and demonstrations will practically prove the progress made in India while we will learn from our Indian colleagues how the media landscape of India is changing."

About DRM

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) is the universal, openly standardised digital broadcasting system for all broadcasting frequencies.

The DRM standard comprises of two major configurations: 'DRM30′ intended for broadcasts on short, medium and long wave up to 30 MHz and providing large coverage areas and low power consumption. The configuration for the VHF bands above 30 MHz is called 'DRM+', tailored for local and regional coverage with broadcaster-controlled transmissions.

All DRM configurations share the same audio coding, data and multimedia services, service linking, multiplexing and signalling schemes.

DRM provides high quality sound combined with a wealth of enhanced features: Surround Sound, Journaline text information, Slideshow, EPG, and data services.

DRM to Celebrate Indian Platform Activity with Workshop in New Delhi

India is one of the leading countries in introducing DRM through an ambitious roll-out plan spearheaded by the public broadcaster, All India Radio (AIR). The progress has been good but the successful take-up of Digital Radio for the millions of radio listening Indians will depend on: affordable receivers, sufficient digital broadcasts, effective marketing and good content.

With the endorsement of AIR, the DRM Consortium launched an "Indian DRM Chapter" (Platform) in February 2011. Its focus is to support the digital roll-out in India.

The Platform, which meets virtually every month in order to exchange information and share in the latest development, is to hold a DRM Workshop at the LaLit Hotel in New Delhi on November 22 offer an opportunity to all interested parties and stakeholders to hear how the DRM transmissions in India have been progressing, to get the latest DRM news from all over the world and receive an update on the All India Radio digital roll-out.

Mr Yogendra Pal, the Honorary Chair of the India Platform is looking forward to this meeting of the India Platform: "The meeting of the Indian Platform members is long overdue. Though we share information virtually all the time there is no better way to get the latest information and contribute to the successful introduction of DRM in India, than meeting face to face."

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Consortium Chair, is keen that this event should be open and welcoming to anyone interested: "DRM needs to go beyond the transmission sites and excite radio manufacturers, content-makers and listeners now. As you know, the DRM India Platform is open to membership from other broadcasters, digital chip, module and receiver manufacturers, transmission companies, distributors and retailers. On the 22nd we will all meet and take the project forward."

About DRM

Dgital Radio Mondiale TM (DRM) is the universal, openly standardised digital broadcasting system for all broadcasting frequencies below and above 30 MHz, including LW, MW, SW, band I, II (FM band) and band III. DRM provides digital sound quality and the ease-of-use that comes from digital radio, combined with a wealth of enhanced features: Surround Sound, Journaline text information, Slideshow, EPG, and data services. DRM on short, medium and long wave for broadcasting bands up to 30 MHz (called 'DRM30') provides large coverage areas and low power consumption. The enhancement of the DRM standard for broadcast frequencies above 30 MHz ('DRM+') uses the same audio coding, data services, multiplexing and signalling schemes as DRM30 but introduces an additional transmission mode optimized for those bands.

DRM launches dedicated information for India

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is pleased to announce the launch later this week of their new online information web page targeted at India. This is the first initiative of the new DRM chapter/group for India which was established a year ago in New Delhi. The new "Noticeboard" is for the benefit of all stakeholders and members of the public who are interested in making DRM a reality in India. Led by former AIR senior executive, Mr Yogendra Pal, the India chapter brings together AIR, some commercial broadcasters, chipset and receiver manufacturers, OEMs and other expertise from India and abroad.
Mr Pal described the new initiative as "coming at an opportune time as India is preparing for the introduction of DRM".

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairperson, welcomed the launch of the new "Noticeboard" which can also be found on the DRM website:  "We want all those interested to have an open space to share information, ask questions and get real news about DRM developments and receivers primarily in India".
