This week was the final week for more than 250 employees at Radio Netherlands. They held a final "borrel" (drinkes reception) in the entrance hall of the building in the Witte Kruislaan 55, in Hilversum.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) is changing course and goes forward in a slimmed-down version: a smaller organisation focussing on Free Speech. From the old RNW ("2.0") to the new: a tour of the desks which will be terminated or are changing their approach.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide in English will cease transmissions on 29 June at 20:57 UTC.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide's budget slashed 70%

The Dutch cabinet yesterday announced figures indicating that from 2013, Radio Netherlands Worldwide's annual budget will be reduced by 70 percent, from €46 million (US$65 million) to €14 million (US$19.77 million).

1296 kHz via Orfordness mediumwave, logged on SDR console remote radio network onn RFSpace IQ units, powerful S=9+32 dB signal in the Netherlands.

Otherwise in all Europe noted shortwave logs, but not on Perseus Server Network in Italy this morning. Up- and Download net is so slowly this morning, and even before 0800 UT disconnected at all.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide changes focus

If RNW's new focus meets with government approval, the reduction would be realised by winding down Dutch-language activities and short-wave broadcasts (by closing two transmitting stations in Bonaire and Madagascar, for example). About 100 jobs will probably be lost in Hilversum and on these two islands.

Radio Netherlands shaken by reports of far-reaching cuts

Radio Netherlands Worldwide was shaken on Tuesday evening by unconfirmed reports that government cuts will leave the Netherlands' international service with less than a quarter of its budget.

In response to the reports from commercial broadcaster RTL TV, Radio Netherlands Director General Jan Hoek says "If this is so, it appears decisions are being taken without due care. I can't imagine this happening."

RN New radio season: focusing on features

Radio Netherlands Worldwide is focusing on feature programmes in its satellite, webstream and shortwave broadcasts. In the new 2010-11 season, which starts 31 October 2010, they are streamlining their programming, giving more opportunities to hear extended versions of their top notch programmes such as The State We're In and Earth Beat.

All-day classical music station launched by RNW

From 3 June, Radio Netherlands Worldwide is offering listeners around the world a new service: classical music radio via the internet. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, it will broadcast classical music by Dutch composers and performers to an international public, and combine it with information about RNW's other activities. In the event of global or national disasters, it will also become an important source of news.

RNW sends 'Radio in a Box' to Haiti

Radio Netherlands Worldwide is sending a mini radio station to Haiti. Many radio stations in the country have been destroyed by the earthquake and many of the people that worked there have been killed. It is in disasters like the one in Haiti that information is vital for survival.

Radio Netherlands partners AIR for co-production

MUMBAI: Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) has entered into a new partnership with All India Radio (AIR) for co-production of a show - Earth Beat. Both organisations will work together in the co production called Earth Beat India. The programme will be broadcast nationally by AIR in English and Hindi every two weeks.

Fire puts RNW Madagascar relay station off the air

MADAGASCAR

Fire puts RNW Madagascar relay station off the air. There has been a fire in the high voltage room of the external mains power supply at Radio Netherlands Worldwide's relay station in Madagascar. Firefighters from the Madagascan capital Antananarivo managed to bring the blaze under control within hours. The fire destroyed the high voltage circuit breaker equipment, so broadcasts from Madagascar will be suspended for at least three days and possibly up to a week. Some transmissions have already been moved to other sites, but because of the Christmas holidays this has taken longer than usual to organise. Additional changes are pending and will be published when confirmed.
