India releases ham radio license figures

India releases ham radio license figures

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released the amateur radio license figures for 2017-18

The figures are given in the 2017-18 DoT Annual Report and show 628 new licences were issued, a record number. The report also notes that 2594 candidates took the amateur radio exam.

The large discrepancy between new licences and candidates suggests it is still difficult to get the Government to issue licences.

Indian Amateur Radio Licences by Jose Jacob VU2JOS

The licensing system in the Republic of India has always been very bureaucratic. The form filling exercise involves supplying height, eye color, occupation and details of your Father (but not your Mother!). In addition applicants have to go through police checks to prove they are a suitable person to hold a licence. In the past this process has meant a delay of between 12 and 24 months before a licence is finally issued.

There are two licence classes in India, General (400w HF, 25w VHF/UHF) and Restricted (50w HF, 10w VHF/UHF). A licence costs 1000 rupees ($15) for twenty years or 2000 rupees ($30) for lifetime.

You'd think that with all the computers in homes, all the smartphones in the hands of everybody from children through senior citizens, all the internet, the world wide web, the forums and blogs and Twitter and Facebook and email and chat boxes and social media, there would be absolutely no interest in an old-time hobby like ham radio.

On air, from a home radio shack

Under the light of a 60-Watt bulb in his ‘radio shack’ at his home at Kannanchery here, M. Sanil Deep has travelled the world through his HAM radio for three decades.

Mr. Deep, or VU3SIO as he is known in the wireless world, is a lucky man. He has not lost any memory to the vagaries of time. In fact, he can pull them out, one by one, at a moment’s notice from his antique iron boxes, caress, and relive them.

They look unassuming, but these quiet types murmuring strings of numbers and letters into their transceivers are manning back-up comms for the world, the communication system most likely to survive an apocalyptic event.

These are the people who maintain the kit we fall back on when masts jam, cables break and global comms fail.
