HAM Radio license exam in Assam

Good News for anyone interested in becoming a Amateur Radio Operator (HAM) in Assam. The NIAR Club Station, Guwahati and Guwahati University Amateur Radio Activity Centre are jointly going to arrange ASOC Examination in Assam, tentatively in the month of May/June 2020. The exam will be conducted in Guwahati by WPC wing of Ministry of Communications, Govt. of India. If sufficient candidate apply for the exam from Upper Assam, the organisers may arrange an examination centre in Jorhat also. Interested radio enthusiasts may contact the following persons for  application form and other details. All assistance regarding study materials, mock test will be provided to enrolled candidates and a pre-exam ham radio workshop will also be arranged in Jorhat very shortly.

India releases ham radio license figures

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released the amateur radio license figures for 2017-18

The figures are given in the 2017-18 DoT Annual Report and show 628 new licences were issued, a record number. The report also notes that 2594 candidates took the amateur radio exam.

The large discrepancy between new licences and candidates suggests it is still difficult to get the Government to issue licences.

The licensing system in the Republic of India has always been very bureaucratic. The form filling exercise involves supplying height, eye color, occupation and details of your Father (but not your Mother!). In addition applicants have to go through police checks to prove they are a suitable person to hold a licence. In the past this process has meant a delay of between 12 and 24 months before a licence is finally issued.

There are two licence classes in India, General (400w HF, 25w VHF/UHF) and Restricted (50w HF, 10w VHF/UHF). A licence costs 1000 rupees ($15) for twenty years or 2000 rupees ($30) for lifetime.

Disaster preparedness: APRO to use amateur radio

To add teeth to the disaster preparedness, Assam Police Radio Organisation (APRO) has decided to fall back on the use of amateur radio, also known as HAM radio.

The APRO is already working on a plan to regroup trained HAM radio operators once again after the Government of India lifted the ban on its use recently.

HAM Operators to Network International Fleet Review

VIJAYAWADA: As many as 22 Ham Radio operators from two Telugu speaking states - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - will be connecting all the important key points of International Fleet Review scheduled to be held in Visakhapatnam from February 4 with the Ham radio communication network.

They will deploy their personal modern all mode communication equipment (single unit capable of functioning in multi modes like HF, VHF and UHF) that have ability to transmit in the ranges of both global and local. Further, they will be deploying VHF repeater for linking all the walkie-talkies in the vicinity of Visakha City.

Special callsign AU3NIAR to celebrate three decades of NIAR

National Institute of Amateur Radio was established with its Headquarters at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India in the year 1983. The activities of the organisation include Awareness Programs, Training, Technical Workshops, Advocacy, DX-pedititions, Contesting and Emergency Communications to promote peoples participation in Communication, Information Technology and Disaster Management through Amateur Radio.

ISRO's 100th Mission

The Japanese amateur radio satellite PROITERES will be one of the payloads of today's PSLV C21 launch and will be the 100th mission of ISRO.

PROITERES was built by a team of students and faculty members of Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT) and the spacecraft aims to demonstrate powered flight using a Pulsed Plasma Thruster (PPT) engine. Its amateur radio callsign is JL3YZK.

 

PROITERES stands for PRoject of OIT Electric-Rocket-Engine Onboard Small Space Ship and will transmit on 437.485 MHz FM/AFSK. The spacecraft carries a camera and the two CPU's run the Linux operating system.

Disaster-hit planners revisit forgotten HAM radios

Shillong, Sep 26 (IANS) The 6.8-magnitude earthquake that shattered the hill state of Sikkim has woken up planners in Meghalaya to the urgent need to reintroduce HAM or amateur radios for uninterrupted communication in the aftermath of a disaster.

Most of the planners felt that communication was vital in a post-disaster situation to speed up rescue and relief operations.
