Vatican Radio's Hindi service completes 60 years

Vatican Radio's Hindi service completes 60 years

The Vatican Dicastery for Communications honored the Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam departments of Vatican Radio for 60 years of outstanding service at a Christmas gathering on Thursday. Vatican Radio is the Pope's radio station, whose mission is to spread the message of love, peace, justice, goodwill, and reconciliation to the world.

Vatican News

Vatican City, Thursday, December 18, 2025 (REI): A new chapter was added to the history of Vatican Radio in 1965, when Hindi broadcasts were launched for India and South East Asia.

In 1964, Pope Paul VI visited India for the World Eucharistic Conference. A few months after this important visit, in May 1965, Vatican Radio began broadcasting in Hindi to India and Southeast Asia. From 1965 to 1982, Hindi broadcasts were broadcast twice a week. From 1982 onwards, the ten-minute evening broadcast was extended to the next morning.

In 1986, when Pope John Paul II visited India, the need for daily broadcasts to India and Southeast Asia was realized. The hard work and dedication of Father Xavier Rajan S.J., then Director of the Indian Section of Vatican Radio, bore fruit, and additional time was allocated to Indian languages from January 31, 1986.

In 1990, in addition to the 15-minute morning broadcast in Hindi, a five-minute news bulletin was added to the evening broadcast. In 1993, our broadcasts began with a 14-minute commentary and six-minute news daily. A replay of the 20-minute evening broadcast can also be heard the following morning.

With the increase in broadcast time and frequency, Indian language channels opened their own offices for the convenience of listeners in India and Sri Lanka. Local offices forwarded listeners' letters to Rome, courtesy of the Pontifical Apostolic Nunciature in New Delhi. The printing and distribution of the radio's monthly magazines were also handled by local offices. The Chennai office was first opened in 1982, followed by Colombo and Kochi. In 1999, at the initiative of Father Cyprian S.J., the then Director of the Indian Department, a Hindi office was opened in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand.

The Hindi service was further enriched by daily updates to the Vatican Radio website. In addition to updating the web page, news began to be broadcast through a news bulletin, initiated by Father Justin Tirkey SJ in 2009.

In the Hindi broadcast, you can receive the Pope's blessing by listening to his Angelus message on Mondays. Church documents are broadcast on Tuesdays and the Pope's message at the weekly General Audience on Wednesdays.

On Thursdays, you can enjoy an introduction to the Holy Scriptures (the Bible), on Fridays, a topical charitable discussion, on Saturdays, Sunday Scripture and liturgical reflections, and on Sundays, a Sunday program and a Hindi play on important social issues. We also broadcast special reports on the Pope's apostolic visits to various countries around the world.

The creators of Vatican Radio's Hindi service consider it an honor to broadcast the voice of Mother Church and her Supreme Head, the Pope, to the world's sixty million Hindi-speaking people. We pray to God that our efforts may contribute to the creation of a better world, enriched with human and Christian values.

Vatican Radio underwent a major transformation in 2017 when Vatican News became integrated with Vatican Radio. The new design of the Vatican News website has been designed to provide greater accessibility for readers and listeners. Currently, the Hindi Department is headed by Father Dilip Sanjay Ekka, a Jesu Sanghi, and is assisted by Sister Anugrah Minj, H.C., Sister Usha Manorama Tirkey, D.S.A., and Juliet Genevieve Christopher, who lead the work of the Vatican Radio Hindi Service.

In keeping with the changing times, Vatican Radio is now available digitally and is increasingly focusing on social media. Vatican Radio Hindi has also opened accounts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and WhatsApp, and these are regularly updated. Efforts are currently underway to refine the web radio as well.

Tatsuhiko Inoue appointed as new NHK President

Tatsuhiko Inoue appointed as new NHK President

December 10, 2025, Tokyo – NHK announced the appointment of current Vice President Tatsuhiko Inoue as the next President of NHK. The appointment was decided by NHK's Board of Governors which met on December 8 to discuss the successor to President Nobuo Inaba, whose term ends on January 24, 2026. Following the announcement, Inoue held a press conference last night to express his views on NHK's role amid a changing media landscape. Inoue's three-year term as NHK president will begin on January 25.

Inoue joined NHK as a news reporter in 1980, beginning his career at NHK's Nagasaki Station in southern Japan, where he spent six years covering disasters, incidents, and a wide range of local news. From 1986 onward, he specialized in political and foreign affairs reporting, later rising to become Head of the Political News Division in 2005. He subsequently served as Controller of Editing in the News Department. In June 2011, in the aftermath of the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, he assumed the role of Director of the Programming Department. In this capacity, he was entrusted with comprehensive responsibility for planning and coordinating NHK's entire programming, including news broadcasts dedicated to safeguarding lives and delivering vital information to the public.

Inoue became a member of NHK's Executive Board and was appointed Senior Director in 2014, a role that involved shaping NHK's strategies and corporate plans. From 2016, he served for six years as President and CEO of two NHK technical affiliates—NHK I-Tech and Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT)—where he oversaw initiatives supporting broadcasting technologies and Japan's satellite broadcasting infrastructure.

In February 2023, Inoue was appointed Executive Vice President of NHK in recognition of his extensive professional expertise, broad network of relationships both within and beyond NHK, and his considerable managerial experience. Inoue is 68 years old.

Before Inoue, six consecutive presidents came from outside the broadcaster. He is the first NHK official to become president since 2005, when Hashimoto Genichi took up the position.

Comment from Tatsuhiko Inoue:
Even as social conditions and the media landscape undergo profound changes, NHK remains steadfast in  its  mission to deliver accurate information and provide high-quality, enriching content. At the same time, the challenges before us are clear: further adapting to the digital era, expanding our international presence, fostering the next generation of talent, and ensuring the sustainability of reception fee revenues. I regard the management team as a single, united force, and together with the entire NHK Group, we will confront these challenges with determination and collective strength.

About NHK
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) is Japan's sole public service media organization. Funded by receiving fees from Japanese households, it has a reputation for impartial, high- quality programs including news, documentaries, children's and educational programs, music, entertainment, culture, animation, and drama. Posted On: 10 DEC 2025 5:49PM by PIB Guwahati

The two-day Regional Community Radio Sammelan (East) was inaugurated in Guwahati today. Organised by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi, the theme of the Sammelan is "Celebrating 20 Years of Community Radio in India." More than 65 Community Radio Stations from the Eastern and Northeastern region are participating in the event.

Welcoming the gathering, Dr. Pragya Paliwal Gaur, Vice Chancellor of IIMC, New Delhi said that it was an honour for IIMC to partner with the Ministry for this milestone gathering. She highlighted the growth of the Community Radio ecosystem, with over 550 stations now operating across India and more in the pipeline, including in the Northeast. Dr. Gaur spoke about the important role of Community Radio in promoting gender-sensitive communication, disseminating emergency information, involving students of media education, preserving folk traditions, and responsibly integrating AI in content development. She urged stakeholders to work together to strengthen community-led development through Community Radio.

Delivering his address, Shri L. Madhu Nag, Registrar, IIMC, highlighted the significant transformation of India's radio landscape—from mainstream FM broadcasting to the emergence of Community Radio as a powerful platform for local voices. Emphasizing the core pillars of strengthening CR stations, he underscored the importance of community-driven content creation, enhanced capacity building, and long-term financial sustainability. He noted that creatively produced, locally rooted content remains central to the success of Community Radio.

Ms Shilpa Rao, Director CRS, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting informed about the objectives of the Sammelan and mentioned that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is committed to the growth and reinforcement of the Community Radio sector in North East Region. She also appraised them about the initiatives taken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in this regard.

Shri Mahendra Meena, Under Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, remarked that Community Radio stations have become indispensable for last-mile communication. He stated that CR stations amplify real community voices and help ensure accurate information reaches people during emergencies and developmental programmes. He reaffirmed the Ministry's continued support to the Community Radio movement.

Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Pranvendra, Convenor of the Sammelan, extended a warm vote of thanks to all participants for travelling to Guwahati and joining the collective celebration of two decades of India's Community Radio movement. She appreciated the commitment of CR practitioners and experts who continue to strengthen grassroots broadcasting across the region.

The first day of the sammelan featured several technical and interactive sessions. Deputy Wireless Advisor, Ministry of Telecommunications Shri Manish Sheelwant spoke in detail about transmitter replacement and migration to the SARAL Sanchar portal, along with guidance on applying for WoL renewal.

Prof. (Dr.) Kanchan K. Malik stressed on the relevance of gender based programming and the vital role of women in CRS programming and participation in the overall content management and broadcasting.

A panel discussion on the engagement of State Governments in promoting Community Radio across the eastern region, moderated by Shri Amit Dwivedi, Project Director CRS engaged with CRS practicioners from Bihar, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal and Odisha.

The first day also included an insightful session on 'Promotion and Preservation of Indigenous Languages and CRS' led by Prof. Uma Pappuswamy from the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru. She said that as the nature of the CRS is hyperlocal, indigenous languages can best be preserved and promoted through the CRS.

The day concluded with a session on community-based content, delivered by Shri N. A. Shah Ansari, Director, Radio Namaskar, Konark, Odisha. He spoke on the best practices to be adopted while creating community based content.

The Sammelan provides Community Radio practitioners a platform to share experiences, raise concerns, explore innovative approaches and collectively strengthen the future of grassroots broadcasting across the eastern and northeastern region

Major Boost for Public Service Broadcasting: Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approves Central Sector 'Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND)' Scheme with an outlay of Rs.2,539.61 crore up to 2025-26.

- FM Coverage of AIR to increase to cover more than 80 per cent of the country's population
-  8 lakh DD Free Dish DTH Set Top Boxes (DTBs) to be distributed to people living in remote, tribal, Left Wing Extremism (LWE), border areas and aspirational districts

04 Jan 2023 4:07PM by PIB Delhi

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the proposal of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting regarding Central Sector Scheme "Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development" (BIND) at a cost of ₹2,539.61 crore for infrastructure development of Prasar Bharati i.e. All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD). The "Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development" scheme of the Ministry is the vehicle for providing financial support to Prasar Bharati for expenses related to expansion and upgradation of its broadcasting infrastructure, content development and civil work related to the organization.

Prasar Bharati, as the public broadcaster of the country, is the most important vehicle of information, education, entertainment and engagement for the people especially in the remote areas of the country through Doordarshan and All India Radio. Prasar Bharati played a stellar role in communicating public health messages and awareness to the public during the covid pandemic.

The BIND scheme will enable the public broadcaster to undertake a major upgradation of its facilities with better infrastructure which will widen its reach, including in the LWE, border and strategic areas and provide high quality content to the viewers. Another major priority area of the scheme is the development of high-quality content for both domestic and international audience and ensuring availability of diverse content to the viewers by upgradation of capacity of DTH platform to accommodate more channels. Purchase of OB vans and digital upgradation of DD and AIR Studios to make them HD ready will be also be done as part of the project.

At present, Doordarshan operates 36 TV channels including 28 regional channels and All India Radio operates more than 500 broadcasting centres. The Scheme will increase coverage of AIR FM transmitters in the country to 66% by geographical area and 80% by population up from 59% and 68% respectively. The Scheme also envisages free distribution of over 8 lakh DD Free Dish STBs to people living in remote, tribal, LWE and border areas.

In addition to enhancing the scope of public broadcasting, the Project for modernization and augmentation of broadcast infrastructure also has the potential to generate indirect employment by way of manufacturing and services related to supply and installation of broadcast equipment. Content generation and content innovation for AIR & DD has the potential of indirect employment of persons with varied experience of different media fields in the content production sector including TV/Radio production, transmission and associated media related services. Further, the project for expansion of the reach of DD Free Dish is expected to generate employment opportunities in the manufacturing of the DD Free Dish DTH Boxes.

Government of India reiterates its commitment to the development, modernization and strengthening of Doordarshan and Akashvani (Prasar Bharati) infrastructure and services, which is a continuous process.

DRM on Air to celebrate 100 years of Radio in Hungary

On December 1st Hungary will celebrate the centenary of its regular radio broadcasting. There will be official events to mark the occasion, accompanied by a DRM transmission on the day.

Currently there are no digital radio services on air in Hungary. For one day only, in honour of the engineers and technicians who embraced the cause of radio broadcasting in the past century, a DRM programme will be aired. It will carry a test audio stream and a short Journaline text service to showcase the benefits of DRM digital radio. This demonstration will take place after four years after the last major DRM campaign in Hungary in 2021.

This time the transmission will be delivered in co-operation with Fraunhofer IIS, 4iG Műsorszóró Infrastruktúra Kft. (the Hungarian broadcasting company) and the DRM Consortium's Associate Member, SZOMEL Kft.

As this is a 100-year anniversary, the transmitted power will be 100 W on 26060 kHz (the frequency might be subject to change). Although this is a relatively small transmitter power, the signal could be received in countries surrounding Hungary, and even in some areas of Germany and the Netherlands, as it happened in 2021.

More details will follow next month.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Hungarian Service Ceases Operations

RFE/RL's Hungarian Service is closing down from midnight on November 21, some five years after relaunching to provide Hungarians with accurate, independent news and information.

In a message to its audience, the service said its team had "worked with dedication to provide independent journalism for audiences in Hungary."

The service's content will remain available online.

"We are deeply grateful for the trust, engagement, and support our readers have shown us," the statement said.

RFE/RL President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Capus praised the work of the Hungarian Service's journalists.

"Their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering contribution to our mission have shaped our success in meaningful ways, and we remain profoundly grateful for everything they have brought to this organization," he said.

The Hungarian service was relaunched in 2020 at the direction of the US Congress. Prior to that, it had operated between 1950 and 1993.

The United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM), an independent government agency that oversees RFE/RL, Voice of America, and other US-funded broadcasters,, notified Congress on November 5, 2025, that it intended to terminate RFE/RL's Hungarian Service. The termination is effective November 21, 2025.

"We are grateful for the audience's attention and support from the first day of our new operation and were honored to provide them unique and original stories," Tibor Vovesz, the head of the Hungarian service, said.

Radyo Pilipinas World Service is back to serve Pinoys abroad thru the shortwave radio !

Radyo Pilipinas World Service is back to serve Pinoys abroad thru the shortwave radio !

Radyo Pilipinas World Service (RPWS) comes back stronger and louder with its services that never ceased online and now finally back on the shortwave radio from its eight months silence.
RPWS the overseas broadcast radio station of the Presidential Broadcast Service (PBS) – Bureau of Broadcast Services (PBS-BBS), under the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) of the Republic of the Philippines has seized operation on the shortwave radio last March 19, 2025 while continuing its online services.

This ensued from United States (US) President Donald Trump's order last March 2025 to stop all United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) broadcast services.

Trump's order has stripped back USAGM's federal funds and placed some of its staff on leave including USAGM Philippines which houses the Voice of America (VOA) facilities responsible for airing RPWS programs through the shortwave radio reaching Filipinos across the world.

RPWS, through the leadership of its Station Manager Mr. Remigio Sampang maintained the overseas broadcast, relentlessly servicing Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Seafarers online despite shortwave radio limitations and challenges.

With the confirmation from USAGM Philippines, RPWS will resume its broadcast operations over the shortwave radio on December 1, 2025.

The revival of its shortwave radio functionality and the expansion to online radio proved RPWS prevailed against all odds.

Afterall, the radio is not dying but it is evolving and adapting to the modern times. Radyo Pilipinas World Service (RPWS) is an embodiment of this claim.

RTI wins two international broadcasting awards at AIBs 2025

The Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) presented Radio Taiwan International (RTI) with two awards at the AIBs 2025 this Friday in London. Rti Academy Director Carlson Huang (黃佳山) received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and host Weimin Tseng (曾偉旻) received Radio or Podcast Presenter of the Year.

While Huang serves as AIB Executive Committee chair for the 2024-2026 term, the association kept the award under wraps until the night of the awards ceremony. They recognized Huang's 30 years of professional dedication, saying it has assisted Taiwan in having a voice on the international broadcasting stage and demonstrating the value of public media in promoting cross-cultural understanding and global exchange.

During his acceptance speech, Huang said that broadcasting has continued to transcend borders despite how the world has changed, connecting people and cultures, and sustaining his long-term dedication to the field.

Cheryl Lai (賴秀如), Rti chairperson, complimented Huang's achievements and spirit throughout multiple decades in broadcasting as a source of pride.

Tseng, who hosts his show in Taiwanese (Tâi-gí), noted that this is his second consecutive year being shortlisted in the Radio or Podcast Presenter of the Year category, saying he was surprised and moved by his being selected.

When accepting the award, Tseng commented, "My program is all related to reviving this language, because this language was suppressed by the authoritarian regime before."

Tseng said receiving an international award is a dream come true and a significant milestone in his career. He pledged to continue promoting multilingual program creation and sharing Taiwan's diversity and resilience with the world.

While RTI is an official broadcast partner of the AIBs, judging is conducted by unaffiliated parties.

BBC World Service announces the launch of BBC Global Women

BBC World Service is launching BBC Global Women, a bold new commitment to highlight women's storytelling across its global output.

Amid reductions in press freedom globally, the need to reach women and girls around the world with trusted news has never been greater. This new editorial priority will enhance the BBC World Service's storytelling by listening, sharing and amplifying stories for women around the world.

BBC Global Women is dedicated to stories that resonate with women worldwide, all year-round.

Alongside new commissions, the initiative will elevate the editorial offer for women by starting conversations, building connections and challenging misinformation. The first commissions under Global Women include exclusive interviews with KPop Demon Hunters' Arden Cho and the First Lady of Sierra Leone, and an investigation into how sexual violence is being used as a weapon in conflict in Ethiopian.

BBC Global Women will deliver fresh, original content throughout the year – including ground-breaking and access-led documentaries, interviews, and stories for women in every corner of the world – across BBC News and BBC World Service digital, social and broadcast channels.

Fiona Crack, Deputy Global Director, BBC News says:

"Press freedom continues to reduce globally, making it harder for the BBC to reach audiences and for audiences to access independent news. Internationally, we also know women in particular view, read and listen to less of our news than men. This is an issue we must urgently address so sharing more stories that matter to women and commissioning stories that resonate with women will be at the centre of BBC Global Women."

Audiences can look forward to a powerful mix of exclusive interviews, original documentaries and social investigations from all corners of the globe.

Upcoming highlights include:

  • Exclusive interviews in the BBC Global Women Meets... series, featuring KPop Demon Hunters' Arden Cho, and First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Bio
  • Groundbreaking documentaries including The Battle to Get My Child Back which follows Greenlandic parents fighting to reclaim their children taken under discredited "parenting competency tests"
  • A BBC World Service investigation into the hidden conflict in Ethiopia's Amhara region where thousands of women have suffered in silence. With incredibly rare access to voices from a region largely closed off to the media, the BBC hears from three survivors of sexual violence which has been used as a weapon in this conflict.

World music Radio Transmitter Update

World music Radio Transmitter Update

3965 kHz went on the air October 29th 2025 from Hvidovre (Copenhagen), 24/7, with 600W. After a couple of days something went wrong and power fell to approx. 50W. Yesterday broadcasting on 3965 was stopped. The transmitter must be repaired. Hopefully back on the air soon.

The transmitter site for 5930 was Bramming (near Esbjerg) until October 5th 2025 with 150W, and then Ishøj until there was an issue with the audio feed. 25800 kHz – 24/7. Transmitter site is Mårslet, South of Aarhus. Power is around 150W, but there are some issues with the transmitter.
