EBU takes listeners on a global journey for World Radio Day

To mark World Radio Day (13 February), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is organizing a 'Musical Caravan' from east to west in partnership with other broadcasting unions across the globe.

Listeners will be taken around the world in a little over two hours.

This special compilation submitted by EBU Members, Associates and its sister unions (ABU, ASBU and CBU*) and coordinated by the EBU Music Unit in Geneva consists of songs representing the musical heritage of 34 countries.

The broad list of contributions include a Richard Strauss lied recorded by Bavarian Radio, an Indonesian song for peace and friendship, a folk tune from India and carnival music from the Caribbean.

The EBU will also share key facts about radio listening compiled by the organization's Media Intelligence Unit in the week leading up to World Radio Day 2016 on its Facebook page and Twitter account.

Another highlight of the EBU's contribution to World Radio Day 2016 will be a special performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by the NHK Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo and the Kunitachi College of Music Chorus. An interview with conductor Paavo Järvi can be found here.

EBU Head of Radio Graham Dixon said: "Radio plays a very significant part in all our lives. On average, we will listen to nine years of radio in a lifetime – more than any activity except breathing and sleeping!  Radio provides a convenient way to encounter new ideas, new music and new ways of thinking, and also provides valuable company to counter isolation and loss.  Nine years of an average lifetime is indeed an impressive figure, but the real personal impact of radio cannot be quantified. World Radio Day provides a great opportunity to reflect on the power of radio."

EBU Study: Radio stands out as most trusted medium across Europe

Radio is the most trusted medium among citizens in 23 out of 34 countries across Europe according to a new report by the EBU's Media Intelligence Service (MIS).

By contrast, social networks, which were measured for the first time, tend not to be trusted in any single country surveyed.

The report is based on the results of the 2014 Eurobarometer, a survey consisting of approximately 1,000 face-to-face interviews in each EU, acceding and candidate country.

EBU urges radio fans to share what they listen

Radio fans are being urged to share where they listen as part of a week of top-level meetings and events at the EBU culminating in World Radio Day 2015, a joint initiative between the EBU, ITU and UNESCO.

A 24-hour broadcast relay will be launched on World Radio Day itself, bringing the global community of broadcasters and listeners even closer together. More than 40 stations around the world will dedicate a half-hour segment of their programming to the World Radio Day theme, handing over in English and then continuing in their native language. The EBU will invite listeners around the world to tweet details and pictures of where they listen to their radio using #MyRadio, with a selection of the most interesting and unusual gathered and posted on social media.

A week of top-level events

Experts will gather at the EBU in Geneva from 11 February. They will discover and share the latest technological developments in digital and hybrid radio at the 2015 Digital Radio Summit on Wednesday 12 February, and will be joined on the 12 and 13 February by software developers, integrators and engineers from broadcasters, service providers, network operators and manufacturers who will head to the ITU headquarters in Geneva for the hands-on RadioHack 2015.

'This is the United Nations calling the peoples of the world'

The week will round off on Friday 13 February with World Radio Day 2015. This year's theme is 'Youth and Radio'. Delegates will gather at the ITU headquarters in Geneva to celebrate the day with an added focus on innovation, in the presence of the Secretary General of the ITU, the Director General of UNESCO and the EBU. There will be live and pre-recorded contributions from, among others, the BBC, China Radio International, Australia's ABC and performances from the United Nations Orchestra.

"The EBU continually strives to harness the latest trends and provide the radio industry with fresh initiatives and standards in broadcasting. This year, we are particularly pleased to join forces with the ITU in their 150th year to showcase how far we have come and shine a light on the way forward. The theme of youth, linked to innovation, ties in very neatly with several of our campaigns, including our support for public service media in negotiations on spectrum allocation and talks on digital terrestrial radio (DAB+) and the Smart Radio initiative." said EBU Head of Radio Christian Vogg.

EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre said, "It is a privilege for the EBU to be involved in World Radio Day 2015, particularly in such a significant anniversary year for the ITU. Radio broadcasters and listeners are a strongly united community and it is a pleasure for us to host a week of top-level events leading up and including the day itself."

BBC applauds ITU decision to track sources of satellite interference

Leading international broadcasters and broadcasting unions are welcoming new steps taken by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to address harmful interference with satellite transmissions, including cases of deliberate interference.

At its recently concluded Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan, Korea, member states agreed to support ITU efforts to track reported cases of interference with satellite broadcasts.

Broadcasters have complained that interference has cut them off from audiences in numerous countries and regions over the past several years.

The new action to address the problem was approved on 7 November 2014 by the Plenipotentiary Conference, attended by representatives of 171 countries.

Director of the BBC World Service Group, Peter Horrocks, says: "This is a welcome step forward. The BBC believes strongly in the free flow of news and information around the world. We must all work together as international broadcasters to put an end to jamming."

Entitled "Strengthening the role of ITU with regard to transparency and confidence-building measures in outer space activities", the agency noted that countries are increasingly relying on space-based communications for a wide variety of services, including remote sensing, communications, and weather forecasting, as well as for bridging the digital divide.

Interference, the ITU assembly noted, makes the delivery of satellite services less reliable, and therefore complicates efforts to bridge the digital divide - efforts which bring enhanced telecommunication services to the developing world.

The Resolution invites the ITU to enter into agreements with satellite monitoring facilities in order to detect the sources of interference, a process known as 'geo-location' and it calls upon the ITU to create a database on interference.

The effort to counteract satellite jamming brings together a coalition of broadcasters from a number of countries, including Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The EBU and the Arab States Broadcasting Union have also taken a leading role. In addition, satellite operators who have been impacted by the practice - in particular, France's Eutelsat and Saudi Arabia based Arabsat - have worked with the broadcasters.

The successful effort to obtain ITU action on the proposal was also a multi-national effort, introduced by a representative of France's Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR) and steered through debate by an official of the United Kingdom's regulatory authority, OFCOM.

More information on the ITU resolution is available here

Digital Radio Summit 2010

Visit http://tech.ebu.ch/digitalradio10

17 February 2010 / 9 to 18 (CEST)
Geneva (CH)
Defining multiplatform hybrid broadcast/broadband radio.
This digital radio summit will gather all the key players in European digital radio:
- WorldDMB - the developers of DAB, DAB+ and T-DMB
- DRM - the developers of DRM30, DRM+
- IMDA: Internet Media Device Alliance, developing and promoting Internet Radio devices
- RadioDNS, a organisation aiming at providing an efficient and seamless link between broadcast and IP platforms

Developing the magic formula in this context raises questions:
- How do these delivery platforms work with broadcasting content? What strategy do the broadcasters need to adopt?
- Which services work best with each platform - is there a pattern?
- How can they work together in a hybrid broadcast broadband environment?
- How will the receiver industry cope?

Who should attend?
- Broadcasters working on strategy, media delivery, new media, multimedia developments
- Service providers
- Industry forums: receiver manufacturers, platform manufacturers
