Radio Bulgaria celebrates in 89th Anniversary

Radio Bulgaria celebrates in 89th Anniversary

On February 16, Radio Bulgaria celebrates its 89th anniversary. Radio Bulgaria is active on social media in 11 languages and connect with listeners through modern digital platforms.

It all began on a Sunday in February when Bulgarian Radio, then called Radio Sofia, began broadcasting its first foreign language programmes to Europe, North Africa and North America. The first programmes were in Esperanto. A few months later, broadcasts in French, German, English and Italian were introduced.

After 9 September 1944, broadcasts in Bulgarian for foreign audiences were discontinued. They were not resumed until the late 1950s.

In 1992, the foreign language programmes of Bulgarian National Radio were renamed Radio Bulgaria. In the following years, some language sections were closed, including Italian, Portuguese and Arabic.

Radio Bulgaria's first website was launched in 2004, offering content in 11 languages to reach an even wider audience. Today Radio Bulgaria offers content in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Serbian, Greek, Albanian, Turkish, Romanian and Bulgarian, through sound, text and images.

Radio Bulgaria turns 85

On 25 January, 1935 Tsar Boris III signed a decree making radio broadcasting state-owned, and the idea for Radio Sofia to broadcast in different languages came into being several months later. So it came about that on 16 February, 1936 the first transmissions targeted at other countries were launched – in the Bulgarian language, plus news bulletins in Esperanto. And even though the BNR's foreign-language programmes were only named "Radio Bulgaria" in 1992, it is the year in which the first broadcasts were launched that is considered to be its birthdate.

"From the very outset the engineers, technicians and editors of the radio, with first director Sirak Skitnik regarded it as a means of communication connecting Bulgarians around the world and bringing foreigners information about the country," says Antoaneta Radoslavova-Doycheva, curator of the Museum of History of Radio in Bulgaria.

On 31 January, 2012, Radio Bulgaria terminated its shortwave broadcasts and migrated to the Internet. "Still, I am happy the radio's foreign-language programmes have continued, albeit online, because the policy regarding Bulgarians abroad should be continued," Antoaneta Radoslavova says.

Radio Bulgaria drops shortwave wef Feb 2012

Dear listeners and friends of the short waves and Radio Bulgaria, with a huge regret to inform you very bad news. After more than 75 years in the world broadcasting from January 31, 2012 at 2200UT Radio Bulgaria cease broadcasting on short and medium waves. The solution is that Radio Bulgaria is not necessary now its short waves and medium waves listeners. The reason -no money for broadcast on short and medium waves. And who listens to short waves today? Already has internet. Maintaining the short waves was "Mission Impossible"! Hope dies last. As a frequency manager in the last 19 years my main task was to provide best quality signal of Radio Bulgaria in worldwide coverage. There will be no short waves, there will be no frequency manager. For all people who work in Radio Bulgaria that bad news is shock and horror
Beginning of the end. But expect your moral support. Please send e-mail to:

Bulgarian National Radio Celebrates 75th Anniversary

Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov bestowed the Bulgarian National Radio with the President's Badge of Honour. This happened at an official ceremony in the Coat of Arms Hall in the Presidency on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the radio. The prize was given to the radio's director general Valeri Todorov. President Parvanov explained that the radio deserved this distinction due to its leading position in the Bulgarian radio air in covering the social, political and cultural life of Bulgaria and its extreme speed in informing its audience. The President underlined the important role of the BNR in maintaining the connection with Bulgarian emigrants abroad. He also stated that the radio was an important factor for consolidating the reputation of Bulgaria worldwide with its broadcasts in 11 languages that could be heard far beyond Bulgarian national borders. The 75th anniversary of the Bulgarian National Radio was marked with a festive concert at Ivan Vazov National Theatre and a ceremony for granting its traditional annual awards named after the radio's first director Sirak Skitnik. Earlier today, a special postal stamp was validated, dedicated to the radio's anniversary.
