AGORA on Radio For Peace International: the voice of the world's youth in service of peace

The International Federation of Young Citizens (IFYC) announces the official launch of AGORA , an innovative monthly radio program dedicated to international news, civic engagement and intercultural dialogue.

Broadcast on shortwave by Radio For Peace International (15770 kHz, every 3rd Sunday of the month from 1pm to 2pm UTC), AGORA is part of a strong initiative: to make the voices of the world's youth heard while actively contributing to a culture of peace and understanding between peoples.

Through this partnership, Radio For Peace International affirms its commitment to open,  accessible and peace-oriented information , by supporting a youth-led initiative aimed at bringing civil societies closer together internationally.

A global space for free and engaged expression Each month, AGORA gives a voice to engaged young people from all continents. Far from dominant media narratives, they share their local realities and initiatives.

The ambition is clear: to circulate authentic testimonies, create bridges between cultures and encourage constructive dialogue between citizens and institutions.

As Gaƫtan Guerin, head of the Radio department at FIJC, points out: "AGORA is first and foremost a collective adventure, where everyone grows thanks to others and where ideas circulate to bring forth a
richer discourse."

With AGORA, the FIJC affirms its commitment to building an international media outlet by and for young people, capable of bringing together different perspectives and fostering a global and inclusive public debate.

A strong editorial line

The name AGORA, inspired by ancient Greece, embodies a place of debate, exchange and living democracy. This choice reflects the core values upheld by the FIJC:

pluralism of information
freedom of expression
international opening
pedagogy and intercultural dialogue

A structured, bilingual and international program

Lasting one hour, AGORA consists of two parts:
a first part in French
a second part in English, produced in partnership with Radio For Peace International , in order to broaden its global audience.

The show is structured around various segments:

The World in Brief : Little-Known International News
Outstanding : Portraits and interviews with committed actors
Society Chronicle : Analysis of contemporary issues
Echoes from the countryside : perspectives from rural areas
Histo Tempo : cultural and musical exploration
Diplomatic gossip : accessible decoding of international relations

A project led by young people

AGORA is produced by the Radio department of the FIJC. The program is produced by a team of students from the Lille School of Journalism (ESJ Lille), from different levels of training, from second year to master's level.
The recordings take place in the studios of Radio Campus Lille, a key partner in the project, which supports the show in its production and broadcasting.

RFPI starts a new broadcast channel towards Iran

Uploaded Image
In a significant development: RFPI has announced the launch of a new broadcast frequency for Iran.

Programs will now also be available on 9330 kHz, every day from 1700 - 1730 UTC, with a power of 100 kW.

Behind this technical announcement lies a crucial issue: enabling thousands of people to access free and independent information.

In a country where access to information is restricted, each broadcast we air is much more than a radio program. It's an open window, a link to the world, an opportunity to understand, to reflect, to remain free.

Radio For Peace International launches a daily program in Farsi for the people of Iran

Radio For Peace International launches a daily program in Farsi for the people of Iran

In a context marked by regional tensions and conflicts that disrupt the flow of information in the Middle East, Radio For Peace International (RFPI) announces the launch of a daily program in Farsi language for the Iranian people , broadcast on shortwave.

The war in the region, combined with restrictions imposed on the media and regular internet disruptions, severely limits Iranian citizens' access to independent and verified information. In response to this situation, RFPI is strengthening its commitment by offering a program designed specifically for Iranian listeners , providing them with direct access to international news and independent analysis.

Since 2019, RFPI has been developing programs dedicated to human rights, press freedom, and access to reliable information , aimed at populations living in crisis zones or facing censorship. Shortwave broadcasting allows them to reach listeners even when internet access is restricted or when international media are blocked.

A daily broadcast to Iran

The program is broadcast daily from 05:00 to 05:30 UTC on the frequency 15640 kHz towards Iran.

Lasting 30 minutes, the program is structured to offer clear, accessible and useful content to listeners:
- 2-minute introduction presenting the themes of the show
- 8 minutes of verified news on Iran and the international situation
- 8 minutes of political analysis and a direct message to Iranian listeners
- 5-minute educational module , offering civic and practical content
- 5 minutes of music celebrating culture and artistic diversity
- 2-minute conclusion

This format aims to combine information, analysis and educational content , in order to provide Iranian listeners with reliable reference points in an unstable regional context.

Shortwave radio: a direct link with the population

In areas marked by conflict and media restrictions, shortwave radio remains one of the few means of broadcasting capable of crossing borders and bypassing technical barriers.

"In times of war or high political tension, access to information quickly becomes limited. Shortwave radio makes it possible to maintain a direct link with the population and to continue to broadcast independent information," explains the RFPI team.

Informing and supporting the right to information

RFPI's programs are produced by an international team of journalists committed to freedom of information and media pluralism .

With this new daily Farsi broadcast, the radio station intends to speak directly to the Iranian people and help maintain access to independent information despite the war, censorship, and restrictions on the media space.

NASWA SWL FEST
2026 Fest dates — May 1, 2 2026 — Holiday Inn Express & Guest Suites, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania and via Zoom

The NASWA SWL Fest is a conference of radio hobbyists of all stripes, from DC to daylight. Historically, every year scores of hobbyists have descended on the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suburbs for a weekend of camaraderie. The Fest is sponsored by NASWA, the North American Shortwave Association, but it covers much more than just shortwave; mediumwave (AM), scanning, satellite TV, and pirate broadcasting are among the other topics that the Fest covers. Whether you've been to every Fest (all 38, starting with the first year at the fabled Pink & Purple Room of the Fiesta Motor Inn) or this year's will be your first, you're sure to find a welcome from your fellow hobbyists, even if it's a "virtual" welcome!.

The 39th Annual (!) NASWA SWL Fest will have two days of sessions where you can learn about the latest developments in the radio listening hobbies. In addition, there's the Hospitality Suite, where attendees partake of tuning oil and other treats and engage in spirited conversations. And of course, the infamous midnight ride of Pancho Villa that traditionally closes things out every year is likely to make a return appearance.

The 2026 Fest will be the third in-person event since 2020 and the CoVID-19 Pandemic, and it will again be limited to 65 in-person participants due to meeting space considerations. However, we also offer the option of participating via Zoom, as we have the past four years.

Radio Free Europe’s Bulgaria, Romania Services to Close

Radio Free Europe's Bulgaria, Romania Services to Close

The Bulgarian and Romanian services of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) are set to cease operations on March 31, sources with knowledge of the situation told BIRN, ending two of the most prominent Western-supported journalism initiatives active in the contemporary media environment.

The closures follow that of RFE Hungary and reflect funding cuts by US Congress. The Moldovan service is secure for this year but external funding is being sought.

RFE/RL President & CEO @SteveCapus:

"This decision has not been taken lightly and is primarily driven by ongoing budgetary challenges. We are proud of the unflinching, balanced journalism produced by Svobodna Evropa and Europa Liberă RomĆ¢nia since their return to Bulgaria and Romania in 2019 and are grateful to these teams for their dedication to their audiences – and RFE/RL – over the last seven years."

Radio Free Asia says it resumes broadcasts to China

Radio Free Asia says it resumes broadcasts to China

By Reuters

- RFA resumes broadcasts in Mandarin, Tibetan, and Uyghur
- Funding cuts by Trump administration led to RFA's initial shutdown
- RFA highlights human rights abuses in China and other authoritarian countries

Full story at :

RFA is back in business! We are proud to have resumed broadcasting to audiences in China in Mandarin, Tibetan, and Uyghur, providing some of the world's only independent reporting on these regions in the local languages. They join RFA Burmese and Korean, which has been reaching audiences inside Burma and North Korea since December. This critical work, which we've been able to resume due to private contracting with transmission services, is already making waves. RFA's Uyghur Service aired a report over the weekend about how children of detainees in Xinjiang are being forced into manual labor at a young age instead of going to school (link below).

Congress' recently enacted FY'26 spending package, signed into law by President Trump, shows its unwavering bipartisan support of our critical mission and work. Rebuilding our network relies on us receiving those funds consistently. But I am confident our work will continue and grow. RFA's incredible journalists and technicians, as well as our legal and HR teams, have made this all possible. I cannot be more proud of everyone behind this effort to get back on our feet as we enter a critical phase for our organization's present and future.

BBC launches emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran

BBC launches emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran
The programme will air daily for 30 minutes across medium and shortwave frequencies

The BBC World Service has launched a temporary emergency lifeline radio programme for Iran in response to the ongoing turmoil in the country, and the unprecedented crackdown on protests.

To complement the existing BBC News Persian video and digital services, the radio programme will be available on mediumwave and shortwave across Iran to increase the population's access to news and information. To broaden its offer and availability of programming, the BBC World Service has also made some of its TV content available on mediumwave radio.

Since 8 January, the Iranian people have been subject to an internet blackout. Prior to this, BBC News Persian's digital services saw their biggest reach in a year with their platforms reaching more than 33 million people.

The short-term programme will cover the latest news and developments in Iran and will place events inside the country within their wider regional and international context. It will feature voices from inside Iran alongside clear, informed analysis of the most recent political, social, and economic developments shaping the situation in the country.

The programme will air daily for 30 minutes across medium and shortwave frequencies from 4.30pm GMT / 8pm Iran Standard Time. The temporary programme has been granted resource from existing funds until the end of March 2026.

Fiona Crack, Interim Global Director, BBC News, says: "A key role of the BBC World Service is to step up in times of crisis to provide news and information for our audiences in greatest need. BBC News Persian reaches one in four adults in Iran, which is an astonishing feat considering their reporting is banned in the country.

"The team have been essential in telling the urgent story of the Iranian people to audiences around the world, and our new radio programme will give the Iranian people more ways to access independent and impartial news."

Tarik Kafala, Interim Regional Director, Middle East and North Africa, says: "BBC News Persian have worked tirelessly to deliver journalism throughout this period of unrest as the demand for trusted news has soared in Iran. The teams have supplied extended TV hours in Iran and an increased offer on digital platforms for the Iranian people. They have reported for UK audiences across bulletins, live pages and on forensic journalism with BBC Verify."

The BBC World Service has a history of launching emergency services in times of crisis. In April 2025, BBC News Burmese started providing audio and video content on a satellite channel in the aftermath of Myanmar earthquake.

In April 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime, the BBC World Service set up an enhanced audio channel on FM and mediumwave for the people of Syria. This follows the emergency radio service for Gaza in November 2024 and for Sudan in May 2023 amid conflict.

In February 2022, the BBC News Ukraine service extended TV bulletins following the invasion of the country.

Where to find the programme:

The live programme will be available at 4.30pm GMT (8pm Iran Time) on 702kHz medium wave and 9465kHz short wave

The programme will be repeated at 6pm GMT (9.30pm Iran time) on 702kHz mediumwave and 5395kHz shortwave

A visualised version of the programme will be broadcast on BBC Persian TV at 6pm GMT (9.30pm Iran time)

CML Micro launches the CMX918 ultra-low-power SDR tuner enabling longer battery life from LF to VHF

CML Micro introduces ultra‑low‑power CMX918 SDR tuner, compatible with digital broadcasting standard such as Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM)

Advanced SDR tuner combines digital radio capability including Digital Radio Mondiale with industry-leading low power consumption for portable and embedded receivers

Maldon, UK, 20th January 26. CML Micro, a leading developer of mixed-signal, RF, and microwave semiconductors for global communications markets, is pleased to announce the launch of the CMX918, an advanced, ultra-low-power, multi-mode Software-Defined Radio (SDR) tuner designed to significantly extend battery life in portable, embedded, and always-on radio applications.

This latest addition to CML Micro's extensive portfolio enables manufacturers to develop next-generation radio devices with smaller footprints, extended tuning capabilities, and reduced power consumption without compromising RF performance. As a result, the CMX918 is particularly suited to battery-powered hand-held devices, portable receivers, remote sensors, automotive and maritime systems where power efficiency is critical. The CMX918 facilitates seamless in-circuit integration via standard SPI, I²C, and I²S interfaces.

In addition to supporting established analogue transmission methods such as AM, FM and SSB, and specialist data services like NAVDAT, the CMX918 architecture ensures compatibility with key digital broadcasting standards including Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM).

Measuring just 5 × 5 mm, the CMX918 provides broad frequency coverage from 150 kHz to 108 MHz, using a highly flexible, software-driven architecture designed for low-power, high-performance applications. The compact footprint and wide tuning range make the device ideally suited to advanced space-constrained designs requiring coverage across LF, MF, HF, and VHF bands while delivering excellent real-world RF performance.

The CMX918 utilises a low-IF architecture with an integrated low-phase-noise VCO to ensure robust real-world signal reception. Software-configurable AGC, selectable IF bandwidths, and standardised digital interfaces support seamless integration across a wide range of radio platforms, enabling the CMX918 to operate as either a stand-alone receiver or as part of a larger high-performance unit.

Key technical features include:

- High spurious-free dynamic range for superior signal integrity
- Integrated low-phase-noise VCO with fast lock time
- Support for AM, FM, DRM, SSB, and many data modulation schemes
- Compact 5 × 5 mm VQFN32 package, ideal for space-constrained designs

"The introduction of CMX918 reinforces CML Micro's expertise in digital radio and software-defined receivers," explains Matthew Phillips, Product Line Director for Broadcast and Maritime, at CML Micro. "By combining wideband performance, high dynamic range, and ultra-low-power operation in a small form factor device, we're empowering integrators and designers to develop smart and adaptive digital radio products quickly and cost effectively."

Developed for flexible deployment, the CMX918 has been designed to meet the requirements of both OEMs and system integrators. Building on CML Micro's proven SDR technology building-block portfolio, the product enables high-performance, low-power receiver designs across a broad range of applications. Optional in-house design services can provide manufacturers and solution developers with flexible integration pathways spanning digital broadcast radio, professional communications, IoT, automotive, and embedded SDR platforms.

For validation and design purposes the CMX918 may be used in conjunction with the EV9180 evaluation kit and ES9180 software tools, which operate in conjunction with CML Micro's PE0004 Universal Interface Card to provide an intuitive, informative, stable and repeatable test environment.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has resumed shortwave radio broadcasts into Iran following the imposition of an internet blackout by the Islamic Republic. Working with several commercial vendors, RFE/RL's Persian-language service Radio Farda is once again providing an alternative to state-controlled media. Radio Farda reaches 6.5 million Iranians inside the country each week across digital platforms.

As nationwide protests in Iran continue, Radio Farda remains a lifeline for the people of Iran, providing vital news and insight, amplifying the voices of activists, verifying the deaths of protesters, and delivering expert analysis on the developing U.S. response.

President & CEO Stephen Capus said:

"At this historic moment, when the Iranian people have been plunged into digital darkness by their government, Radio Farda's return to the airwaves is an essential breakthrough. We're reaching the people of Iran with the facts they need to stay safe – and ensuring their voices continue to be heard. Our journalists at Radio Farda are working nonstop to fulfill our commitment to the people of Iran."

In the week leading up to the Islamic Republic's internet blackout, Radio Farda's digital reach surged. Between January 2-8, Radio Farda's Instagram content was viewed at least 30 million times per day – 241.8 million views total – with 96% coming from Iran. Radio Farda is a primary source of international perspectives on the crisis for Iranians, providing the latest statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the House Foreign Affairs Committee Majority, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), as well as analyses of the crisis and its impact on U.S. and foreign policy debates and analysis by experts such as Jack Goldstone, Michael Sobolik, Michael Rubin, and Ilan Berman.
