Radio Taiwan International is inviting listeners and web users all over the world to select this year's "Top 10" Taiwan, cross-strait, and international news stories. Participants will have a chance to win one of great prizes such as smartphones, tablet computers and more just by voting for the news story that they think is most important

Notes
* Each participant is eligible for only one prize. Any individual found to be intentionally using software to vote an excess number of times will be barred from participating.
* The winners will be chosen at random by computer and then sent notification via email. Each prize winner must then send his or her personal information to the event organizer via email within ten days of receiving the notification. Failure to do so will result in the winner's disqualification from prize collection. Radio Taiwan International will ensure that winners' personal information will not be misused in anyway, in accordance with relevant laws.
* Each prize will be sent to the address provided by the relevant winner.

Radio Taiwan International - Frequency change for listeners in South Asia

Starting March 7th, 2011 our english transmission to South Asia from 1600 to 1700 UTC on 11550 KHz will be replaced by 9435 KHz. While we do notice the occasional problem of noise and interference in certain parts of India, the new frequncy has a stronger signal than 11550 KHz. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank listeners for monitoring the reception condition for us in India.

Purpose
Radio Taiwan International (RTI) is giving away a limited number of t-shirts to our listeners around the world to thank you for your support of the radio station.

How to enter
To enter for a chance to win a t-shirt, you can send us an email or a reception report about the reception condition in your part of the world. RTI will send you a Qualified Shortwave Listener (QSL) card along with a contest entry card. Return the contest entry card back to RTI with your name and mailing address. There is no limit to the number of entries listeners can send. Photocopies of the card, however, will not be accepted.

Deadline for receiving QSL card and contest entry card Send us an email that is time-stamped or a reception report that is postmarked between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2010 to receive the QSL card and the contest entry card.

"Having Fun in Taipei"
2009 Mandarin and Taiwanese Speech Contest for Non-native Speakers Sign up before April 30th!

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is the most familiar Taiwanese city for people living in other countries. In order to encourage foreigners to learn Taiwanese and Mandarin Chinese, Radio Taiwan International (RTI) and the Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism are hosting a speech contest for foreigners. As long as you have lived in Taiwan for less than six years, you are eligible to enter. The contest offers an opportunity to not only learn more about Taiwan, but also to speak about how you have fun in Taipei and demonstrate your language skills. All contestants will be treated to afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, and we will be present the first-place winner with a prize of NT$30,000 and a free night's stay at the Grand Hotel.

RTI Chairwoman Alice Kao has a hint for contestants: In order to encourage participants to learn as much as possible, those using both Taiwanese and Mandarin in their speeches will get bonus points! In addition to the top three contestants who will receive cash prizes from $10,000 to $30,000NT, there will also be one $6,000 prize awarded for each of the following: the most amusing, the most confident, and the most stylish contestants! RTI adds two new programs

Radio Taiwan English Service has added two brand new shows in March. Taiwan Inc, which is aired on Wednesday, offers a unique look at Taiwan's economic situations. Sino Files, aired on Sunday, is a 15-minute program about China and Chinese culture. Meanwhile, the 30-minute weekday music program "Soundwaves" has been cancelled.

Radio Taiwan seeks integration through airwaves

NEW DELHI - Radio Taiwan International held its biennial Listeners' ClubMeet in Delhi on Saturday.Previously held in March 2006 in New Delhi and Kolkata, the RTI delegatesvisited Chennai and Kolkata along with New Delhi this year. Speaking to themembers of the listeners' club, RTI chairman Yu Cheng said, "We aim toachieve international cooperation through our programming and news. AlthoughTaiwan has a population of over 22 million, we still haven't been granted aplace in the WHO."Added Andrew Cheng, Director of the Information Division of Taipei Economicand Cultural Center in New Delhi, "Taiwanese journalists aren't even allowedto cover the World Health Assembly proceedings. We are eager to again becomea member of the WHO and we require international support for our cause."RTI is a national radio station and is under the Central Broadcasting System(CBS), which is the national broadcasting system of Taiwan. CBS wasestablished in 1928 in Nanjing (mainland China) as the voice of theKuomintang (KMT) government. After the conclusion of the Second World Warwhich saw the surrender and withdrawal of Japanese forces, the KMT and theCommunist Party of China (CPC) resumed their civil war. The KMT retreated toTaiwan in 1949 and the Central Broadcasting System moved with them.The RTI currently broadcasts in 13 languages over various regions of theworld. Among the broadcasting langauges include French, German, Indonesian,Thai and Japanese The language for broadcast in India is currently English."We have been suggested by listeners over our tour across India to broadcastin Hindi, Tamil and Bengali. It is too early for me to give you concreteinformation but I will make sure I put this forward to the relevantGovernment agencies back in Taiwan," said Cheng."Currently, we look at Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese as very importantlanguages for broadcast as we have about 300,000 immigrant workers in Taiwanfrom the South-East Asian region and many of them have married taiwaneselocals," said Carlson Huang, Chief of Foreign Languages section and EnlishProgram host in the RTI."The RTI is government owned and works similarly to the way the BBC or theDeutsche Welle networks run.Our main aim in broadcast is to provideinformation to listeners about Taiwan, its culture and its people. We lookto establishing international cooperation through our work," said Huang onthe fuctionalities of the RTI.Although, the members of the club were generally very happy with theprogramming content, there was an issue that most of them brought up. Theissue of there being distubance in the signals between 0930 and 1000 Hrs andthat there are times when the signals just fade away at those times. Thestation currently broadcasts at two frequencies viz. 9785 kHz and 11550 kHzand the problem was experienced at the 9785 kHz frequency."This is a serious problem as we see it. We will talk this over with ourtechnical team when we get back and we certainly would want to rectify themat the soonest. Also, although we have got many positive response on ourprogramming content, we will not rest on our laurels but will work towardsmaking the content even better," promised Cheng.
