HAM Operators from Cyclone Shelters of Nachugunta Island, Andhra Pradesh, excel in Island On The Air (IOTA) Expedition

25 FEB 2024 8:49PM by PIB Delhi

Advocating last mile connectivity and a HAM in every village, alongside the readiness of HAMs to aid in communication failures, a dedicated team of amateur radio operators (HAMs) embarked on a significant journey from the cyclone shelters of Nachugunta Island, Andhra Pradesh, to participate in the Island on the Air (IOTA) expedition. It aimed atintegrating HAM education in primary and secondary schools for widespread adoption and enhanced disaster response across the country. Despite facing the challenges of a very difficult and remote location, these enthusiasts showcased the spirit of innovation and resilience that truly embodies the 'Make in India' ethos in the communication sector.

The In-charge of the Wireless Monitoring Station in Vijayawada and the Head of the International Monitoring Earth Station in Jalna, Maharashtra, accompanied by an official from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) headquarters, visited the remote site. During the visit, they commended the steadfast dedication of the HAM operators, acknowledging their efforts as a reflection of India's excellence in communication technology.

At the site, five Amateur High Frequency stations and one Amateur Satellite station were set up using most of the self-designed and locally developed communication equipment, showcasing India's commitment to the "Make in India" initiative. Operating from the disaster-prone village of Nachugunta Island (AS-199), located in the West Godavari District within the Vijayawada region of Andhra Pradesh, these operators utilized the cyclone shelters along the Bay of Bengal coastline as their base for communication.

In the course of their expedition, the team of HAMs made approximately 4,000 global contacts with HAMs including from US, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Europe, Soth Asia etc, showcasing their proficiency in establishing communication links across the globe. Moreover, they seized the opportunity to raise awareness about emergency communication preparedness, conducting sessions in local schools and villages to educate the community about the significance of effective communication during crises.

The success of this expedition not only highlights the technical expertise of the HAM operators but also underscores the importance of community engagement and preparedness in the face of natural disasters. Through their commendable efforts, the team has not only demonstrated India's capabilities in the field of amateur radio operations but has also contributed significantly to enhancing emergency communication resilience in vulnerable areas.

Radio hams' help 'invaluable'

NASA asked for help from the Amateur Radio community in tracking NanoSail-D on 437.270MHz - their response has been described as 'invaluable'.

The NanoSail-D satellite ejected from FASTSAT last week and deployed its sail late Thursday. The unfurling marks the first time a NASA craft has ever opened a solar sail in low-Earth orbit, according to agency officials.

Dean Alhorn, NanoSail-D principal investigator said:
"To get to this point is an incredible accomplishment for our small team and I can't thank the amateur ham operator community enough for their help in tracking NanoSail-D,"

"Their assistance was invaluable. In particular, the Marshall Amateur Radio Club was the very first to hear the radio beacon. It was exciting!"

Chennai's 3rd & Highest Point VHF Repeater at Yelagiri Hills re-activated

Very happy to inform that due to the untiring efforts & committment of a team of Chennai Hams , the third and highest point repeater in Chennai range has been re-activated at Yelagiri Hills . Yelagiri is a hill-station on midway between Chennai and Bangalore located at an altitude of 1,050 metres (3,500 ft). Distance : 258+ km from Chennai, 150 km from Bangalore.

Yelagiri Repeater Frequency: 145.475(-600)

Approximate Geographic GPS Coordinates:

Latitude : 12.572827
Longitude : 78.649235

This repeater has been non operational for a longtime now due to various technical reasons, today a dedicated team of HAMS made the visit and the tedious climb up the top of the hill and carried out basic repairs. It was tested from Chennai with good signal report usng beam as well as Omni directional antennas . In further weeks it needs to be tested to see how much this repeater could cover, but this repeater should pave way for reliable amateur VHF link between Chennai & Bangalore as well as all other towns and cities within 150-200-250 Kms of the Yelagiri repeater.

With this Chennai has three VHF repeaters operational, the other two repeaters are 145.775(-600) & 145.675(-600). There is also a UHF repeater under test , Tx-435.800/Rx-434.100.

At least one Haitian Ham station active

From the CQ / WorldRadio Online Newsroom:

Some ham radio activity from Haiti is beginning to be heard, following yesterday's devastating earthquake.

Father John Henault, HH6JH, in Port-au-Prince, made contact late Wednesday morning with the Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net (IATN) on 14.300 MHz, the IARU Global Centre of Activity frequency for emergency communications. Based on relays monitored at W2VU, Father John reported that he and those with him were safe, but had no power and no phone service. He was operating on battery power and hoping to get a generator running later in the day. He asked the station copying him, William Sturridge, KI4MMZ, in Flagler Beach, Florida, to telephone relatives with information that he was OK.

The following frequencies are in use for earthquake-related traffic and should be kept clear unless you are able to provide requested assistance:
14300 (IATN), 14265 (SATERN); 7045 (IARU Region II) and 3720 (IARU Region II) kHz. Additional frequencies may be activated on different bands at different times of day, so be sure to listen carefully before transmitting to make sure you are not interfering with emergency traffic.

We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
