VOA Bengali to be back on shortwave wef 5th June 2016

Anish Lalit of Voice of America Bengali department shares that VOA's Bengali transmission will be back on shortwave with effect from 5th June 2016 as per below schedule :

0000 - 0100 UTC (0530-0630 IST) on 6040 kHz from Udon Thani with Az 280 (Daily)

0300 - 0400 UTC (0830-0930 IST) on 7305 kHz from Udon Thani with Az 276 (Daily)

Voice of America's shortwave transmissions in Bnegali language was discontinued on 30th June 2014 and was available on a single mediumwave frequency.

VOA drops shortwave to Asian sub continent

Farewell VOA shortwave from June 30. Just announced cuts remove english language programs for Asia, many foreign language programs, and also affect Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shortwave services. Services continue to Africa in English.

According to reports  :

- All shortwave frequencies will be eliminated for Voice of America English radio broadcasts to Asia, VOA English teaching programs, and VOA programs to Bangladesh by 30th June (Monday)

- All shortwave frequencies for the following services will also be eliminated: Azerbaijani, Bangla, English (Learning), Khmer, Kurdish, Lao and Uzbek. 

- Shortwave being used by services at RFE/RL and RFA are also being cut.

- BBG's proposed shortwave cuts for FY2014 have been approved by Congress.

USA   Voice of America to end shortwave broadcasts in English and several language services. From Mon June 30 all shortwave frequencies for English News programs to Asia will be eliminated. We will no longer be heard via shortwave in the morning 2200-0200 UTC and in the evening 1200-1600 UTC.

Sequestration Prompts Attempt to Silence U.S. Radio Broadcasting

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) recently informed its workforce about sequestration cuts to Voice of America's (VOA) shortwave and medium-wave broadcasting. Ironically, the Board is cutting the most cost-effective part of its organization: radio.

BBG reverses planned reductions in VOA & RFA broadcasts to Tibet and China

Facing overwhelming bipartisan criticism in Congress and from numerous human rights and media freedom groups, BBG members reversed their previous plan and decided to retain Voice of America (VOA) radio broadcasts in Tibetan, the VOA Cantonese Service (radio, TV and Internet), as well as Radio Free Asia services at present levels.

Annette Lantos Defends Voice of America Broadcasts to China

Annette Lantos, wife of the late Congressman Tom Lantos, has written a letter to the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) defending Voice of America China broadcasts in Tibetan and Cantonese. The BBG put these broadcasts on the chopping block in its budget proposal earlier this year.

Beyond the Radio Days

Some view Voice of America as "stuck in the 1950s with short-wave radios," as one of the agency's Washington-based Africa TV hosts recently phrased it. Don't let Voice of America broadcasts go static

Voice of America (VOA), the jewel in America's public diplomacy effort abroad, is set to be streamlined. Some programs can be downsized. But VOA is in the national interest, especially as Russia, China, and Iran expand state-supported media. Cuts should be handled with care.

Colleagues in the China Branch,

I want to take this opportunity to share information with you about the FY 2012 budget and its possible impact on the Mandarin and Cantonese Services. I have been working closely with other senior agency managers on developments relating to VOA China programs and can confirm for you today that the proposed reductions to the VOA Mandarin and Cantonese Services will not take place on October 1.
These reductions were not included in either the Senate Full Committee or House Subcommittee Draft Funding Bills and no FY 2012 funding bill has been acted on by Congress.
I can assure you that I will continue to be actively engaged in this process and will keep you apprised.

On October 1, 2011, Voice of America’s (VOA) Chinese radio service will go silent, as U.S. international broadcasting abandons the airwaves and moves to the Internet. In the burgeoning age of new media, many, including the management at Voice of America, seem to be questioning the continued relevance of shortwave radio.

Support Continued Voice of America Broadcasting to China

Proponents of U.S. international broadcasting to China got some reason for hope last month when a group of congressmen, led by Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) produced a letter in support of continued funding for communication to the vast Chinese populace. The congressmen propose to fence off a portion of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) budget (part of the state and foreign operations appropriations bill)
