Voice of America Teams up with Maputo’s Top Radio 104.2 FM
Washington, DC — March 29, 2011 — Voice of America's comprehensive coverage of global, regional and African news is now available on Top Rádio 104.2 FM in Maputo, Mozambique.
VOA Portuguese Service Director Ana Guedes says the partnership, which officially began Monday, "allows VOA and its network of correspondents in Africa and around the world, to offer a global perspective to the Maputo station." We are pleased to be working together with Top Rádio, Guedes said, and hope listeners will enjoy VOA's coverage of international news and current affairs.
Top Radio, with its mix of youth and adult contemporary music, broadcasts in three languages, Portuguese, English and Changane.
Under the rebroadcasting agreement, Top Rádio 104.2 FM will air VOA's Portuguese news and current affairs program from 1930 to 2000 hours (7:30 pm to 8 pm) local time on Monday through Friday. A one hour VOA English lesson will air at 1800 hours (6 pm) Monday through Friday, and the VOA health show "Vida Sem Medo" will air from 1400 to 1600 (2 pm to 4 pm) Saturday afternoons.
The agreement also gives Top Rádio full access to VOA's popular music programs.
Carlos Henriques, Regional Adviser for VOA Audience Development, says, "Mozambique is an important market for VOA Portuguese Service programs and we are delighted to be on Top Rádio 104.2 FM with a full range of VOA content.
Top Rádio station manager David Muianga, says, "We are consolidating the promotion of social values by integrating the VOA programming on Top Rádio, and therefore offering to our listeners and the general public, in particular in the Maputo City and Maputo province area, news and information that is up-to-date and credible."

Bangladesh Betar reaches expats with Thomson
Thomson Broadcast is supplying a 250 kW TSW 2300D shortwave transmitter, together with the rotatable HP-RCA 2/2/0.5 shortwave antenna system to Bangladesh Betar, the new transmitter and antenna installation will be located at the Kabirpur Shortwave Station, about 40 km north of the capital Dhaka, and is scheduled to be operational by September 2011 while the antenna is planned to be on air by spring 2012.

Radioplayer: Radio's digital future
Today sees the launch of Radioplayer – an online service with brings together all BBC radio content and the majority of the UK’s commercial stations. Surprisingly, such a service has not existed before.
Reduced BBC Hindi service will affect millions, critics say

KLICK! – The Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum photo competition
A call for entries: Photographic images reflecting human rights and globalization from around the world. Leading up to the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn from June 20-22, Germany’s international broadcaster is calling for entries for its worldwide photo competition. ”Klick! – Your View of Human Rights and Globalization” will focus on photographic images that highlight human rights and globalization around the world. DW will publish the submitted photos online in a virtual atlas at http://www.dw-gmf.de/klick_competition/. The website also offers more information about the competition and banners to download. Human rights and globalization always share one focus: people. That’s why DW is looking for photos with situations involving people for this competition. Photos and a brief description need to be sent to klick@dw-world.de by April. 20. The online voting process will begin on April 25 to select the final 30, which will be exhibited at the Global Media Forum in Bonn. The approximately 1,500 Global Media Forum participants and guests will then select three winners from the 30 in the exhibition. These three winners will receive an iPod Nano (8 GB), an iPod Shuffle (2 GB) and a USB stick (4 GB). Pvt FM radio to be allowed to carry news sourced from AIR
Private FM radio channels will soon be allowed to broadcast news but will have to source it from the All India Radio (AIR), a senior government official said today.

BBC World Service and Radio Australia agree to share content and transmission sites.
BBC and Radio Australia signed a memorandum of understanding to explore a number of new areas of joint activity, including in English Language teaching. As the BBC and Radio Australia share editorial values and approach, it means that we can distribute content from both organisations on existing transmission sites, operated by BBC or Radio Australia.

Next edition of Media Network Plus March 26 at 0100UTC
Hi Everyone,
Just to let you know the next edition of Media Network Plus for March will have it's first transmission at 0100UTC on the 26th on 9955khz. This months show will include part of David Goren's Shortwave Shindig from the SWL Fest on March 4th Also on the program some news on what is going on in Japan concerning shortwave after the earthquake and tsunami.
This weekend will be Happy Station's 2nd Anniversary as myself as host. Coming up on the program some of the most fun interviews from the past year. We will also present a recreation of an original program from the late 1920s. This recreation also includes some vintage clips from PCJ of that era.

Dear friends, you are once again invited to take part in a prize winning contest entitled "Multicultural Timisoara", organized by Radio Romania International and focused on a true multicultural and multiethnic melting pot, Timis county, in Western Romania, with emphasis on the city of Timisoara. We are trying to pique your curiosity regarding Timisoara, the Timis county capital, in the historical province of Banat,with at least two historical data: in November 1884, Timisoara became the first European city with public electric lighting, and in December 1989 the anti-communist revolution in Romania started in Timisoara.

Aside from this ethnic and confessional diversity, we have to mention that Timisoara is one of Romania's economic engines, a higher education center with a long tradition, a city with an exceptional cultural life, but also a center of communications and transportation. Mostly German, Italian and US businesspeople have made investments in Timisoara. The German National Theater, the Hungarian National Theater and the Romanian Opera house share the same historical building. An important cultural landmark is the "Banat" Philharmonics. Another one is the Banat Museum, set up in 1872. It hosts the largest collection of archeological pieces in Banat. The institution has various branches, such as an Art Museum, an Ethnography Museum, the Banat Village Museum. From an architectural point of view, the city boasts a large heritage of historic buildings (according to some sources, as many as 14,500). The Baroque style of Viennese influence is prevailing. It earned Timisoara the name of "Little Vienna", but we can also find buildings in the Art Nouveau, secession, eclectic or Romanian styles. Timisoara has many green areas that mostly stretch along the navigable part of Bega River. For this reason, Timisoara has earned the moniker "city of parks and roses".
Timisoara is a "city of firsts" among cities that are now on Romanian soil: 1728 - the beginning of works to turn Bega River into a navigable canal; 1854 - the first telegraph service; 1855 - the first city in the Habsburg space to have public gas lighting; 1881 - the first telephone network; 1886 - the first ambulance service in Hungary and Romania; 1895 - the first street laid with asphalt; 1899 - the first electric tram in today's Romania, and many more.
