DRM Education Webinar

Under the Title of "Digital Radio Mondiale DRM – Delivering Distance Education," the DRM Consortium in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) hosted an interactive webinar session on June 18th which enjoyed the participation of over 165 participants, on par with previous two April webinars organised with the great support of ABU .

During the 120 minute webinar today participants saw how Digital Radio Mondiale DRM can be as effective or even more effective than the internet in delivering rich and targeted teaching material to millions of students who have no access to IP connections and devices.

The webinar main presenters (Alex Zink, Thimmaiah Kuppanda Ganapathy and Ruxandra Obreja) went through the planning and programming stages of getting education audio and text content to the listeners or rather users. The presenters looked at the transmission chain, the content server configuration (the teacher), the DRM software radio receiver (the student) and the DRM distance learning content, with a live demo at the end. During the webinar the questions kept coming and they were answered on the spot or will be answered in writing very soon. A selection of these will be posted on the new Q@A page of the www.drm.org website.

Next series of three webinars by DRM consortium will be organised with AIBD and will start on July 8th. If you wish to be a presenter in August or September please contact DRM consortium.

Nautel's VS1 puts DRM+ On-Air in India

A Nautel VS1 low power FM transmitter was the transmission backbone of DRM+ trial measurements in India that "have thrown up very satisfactory results," according to the DRM Consortium. The tests conducted during the week of May 23rd, 2011 were organized jointly by All India Radio (AIR) and the DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) Consortium, and demonstrated the viability of DRM digital radio in the FM band for the Indian market.

Indian DRM Platform launched

Following the announcement by the Indian government in the spring of 2010 that DRM is to be rolled out across India, leading members of the DRM Consortium, the DRM chair and vice-chair, with the chair and vice-chair of the Technical committee as well as the Asia-group chair and representatives from the BBC, TDP, Transradio, Digidia, Fraunhofer IIS, RFmondial and Analog Devices have taken part in a week of events linked to Radio Asia 2011 (February 21st -23rd) and the India Broadcasting Engineers Society, annual conference (February 24th - 26th). Both events were held in New Delhi.

Among the highlights of this week of presentations, demonstrations and discussions were the excellently attended 'hands-on' DRM workshop, held on Monday February 21st at RAC2011 and the meeting with some of the Indian car manufacturers. The culmination of these events came on February 23rd with the launch of the Indian DRM Platform, an informal group of Indian stakeholders (broadcasters, network operators and manufacturers) whose aim is to raise awareness of DRM in India with the ultimate goal of bringing better, digital radio to new receivers and platforms for the Indian listener.

All these events will be discussed and reviewed in ten days time at the DRM General Assembly Meeting on the 7th - 8th March 2011 at the Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur. This will be the first time that DRM has held its key internal meeting in Malaysia.

The General Assembly is the largest decision-making body of the DRM Consortium. It meets once a year to oversee the Consortium's activities and progress made in spreading knowledge on the use and implementation of DRM digital radio technology. The two day conference (7th-8th March 2011) will be attended by many DRM members and supporters from around the world who will not only review the work that has been undertaken, but will discuss the progress of DRM technology and the challenges faced when introducing digital radio.

At the end of the General Assembly, the DRM Consortium hopes to meet many DRM members and friends at a networking event organized just before Digital Broadcasting Symposium (8th -11th March 2011).

All India Radio tender notice for DRM digital transmitters

India's public service broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) is putting into practice its plans for digitalisation of radio and has placed a global tender notice for the procurement of several DRM digital transmitters. AIR has invited bids for the supply of 34 new MW transmitters, for the upgrade of 36 MW transmitters and purchase of 5 SW transmitters and other associated equipment. The Research Department of AIR is also going ahead with the purchase of a 500 watt DRM shortwave transmitter for conducting trials on 26 MHz SW DRM transmissions for local coverage. This procurement process is the start of the AIR's digitalisation plan of ensuring DRM Digital radio coverage for the entire country, thereby providing better and more robust radio services to the listeners.

Earlier this year, AIR had placed orders for the purchase of two 1000 KW DRM capable transmitters which are now being made ready for inspection and delivery. These MW transmitters can be operated in DRM mode, in analogue or in simulcast mode and provide coverage to very large areas in the Indian subcontinent. The transmitters have been manufactured by Thomson Broadcast & Multimedia, A.G.

And recently All India Radio has also confirmed the purchase of 6 mobile DRM transmitters of 10 KW each which are AM/DRM ready. These containerized transmitters are meant to be used in disaster management CASES as they can be easily transported to the affected areas by air/rail/road. A 60 meter medium wave mobile mast goes in another container which can be easily erected together with the transmitter and start broadcasting as and when required. These transmitters are being supplied by M/S Riz, Croatia.

Digital makeover for DD, AIR soon
