59th ABU General Assembly 2022 being held from 25th to 30th November’ 2022 in New Delhi

Prasar Bharati, India's Public Service Broadcaster, which controls the premier electronic media organizations   All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) is hosting the 59th ABU General Assembly 2022. The theme of this year's assembly is "Serving the People: Media's Role in Times of Crisis". The Conference is being held from 25th to 30th November 2022 at the Hotel Pullman. The event also includes the TV Song festival being held on 27th November' 2002 in Siri Fort Auditorium.

The ABU (Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union) is a nonprofit, professional association of the broadcasting organizations of Asia and pacific region.
Around 300 international delegates from 40 countries representing 50 organizations are participating in the event.
The event coincides with the celebration of the 75th year of the India's independence "Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav".

Series of the international conferences are planned on the topics ranging from the Programming, Sports, Technical, Women's Contribution and Participation, Planning and Strategy.

CEO, Prasar Bharati, in his address to the press on 26-11-2022 during the conference at hotel Pullman highlighted the important role the electronic media played during the Covid crisis and the necessity of the Electronic media to keep themselves ready, updated and relevant for the future.  Prasar Bharati   is set to play a leading   role in shaping the policies for taking further the objectives of the ABU.

The Conference is first of its kind in the Broadcasting sector after Covid pandemic and is being held in the physical form. The participants are very excited and are enthusiastically participating in the event. Leading Broadcasting Equipment companies are also showcasing their latest products and services in the conference.

The Conference is expected to strengthen relations with Foreign Broadcasters, particularly from ASEAN countries, thus favoring the Act East Policy of the Government of India.

The Conference will provide opportunities for Broadcasters to interact with each other, discuss the challenges faced by Media industry in general and Public Service Broadcasters in particular.

The Conference will also provide opportunity to India to showcase its rich culture to visiting foreign dignitaries, thus promoting tourism and "Atma Nirbhar Bharat"on the International stage.

Digital Radio MondialeTM (DRM) – Announces New Webinar


Following from the two successful webinars "DRM Benefits in Times of Crisis," the DRM Consortium in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Broadcast Union (ABU) is announcing a follow-up interactive webinar session, focused on "DRM for Education" on June 18th, details for registration will follow shortly.

The webinar will try to demonstrate how digital radio DRM can be as effective in delivering rich and tailored teaching material to millions of students who have no access to IP connections and devices. The webinar will be mainly practical and interactive and will highlight the great advantage of digital over analogue in delivering education and information in a new way.

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) collaborates with ABU and ASBU to jointly host webinar

Under the theme of "DRM Benefits in Times of Crisis," The DRM Consortium in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Broadcast Union (ABU) and Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) will jointly and for the first time host a two-part interactive webinar session. The webinar will focus on key DRM benefits and what makes the standard so useful in times of crisis and disasters.

The first session will take place on Thursday 23rd April 2020 and the second session will take place a week later Thursday 30th April 2020 (0800 UTC, 0900 BST- London and Tunis time, 1600 MYT, Kuala Lumpur time).

Both webinars will explore the benefits of the DRM digital radio technology in times of crisis and disasters by demonstrating key features such as, Emergency Warning Functionality (EWF), monitoring map, content server programming using Journaline and how the DRM technology is used in public signage. The webinars will also delve into how DRM data casting technology could be valuable in education for all, especially in regions which are not always covered by internet or television signals.

The speakers will include: Ruxandra Obreja (DRM Chair), Alexander Zink (Fraunhofer IIs, DRM Vice-Chair), Yogendra Pal (Chair Indian Platform), Simon Keens (Ampegon), Jan Bremer (NXP) and Radu Obreja (DRM Marketing Director).

According to DRM Chairman, Ruxandra Obreja:" This webinar duo on the 23rd and 30th of April is a first for us as our long and fruitful cooperation with ABU is now being enriched with that of ASBU. We feel that as a lot of people are under lockdown just now, a webinar is an excellent opportunity to learn more about DRM and its many advantages, beyond excellent audio, which can become particularly useful in times of crisis. We hope that many participants will register for the two events to be technically hosted by ABU".

Digital Radio Mondiale at ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2015

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium will have a strong presence once again at the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium (DBS) 2015 in Kuala Lumpur LINK, one of the premier digital events in Asia.  DBS is a key event in the DRM calendar. A general update will be offered on the opening day (Wednesday 4th March) under the title 'Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) - Delivering to all your needs'. 
 
Focusing on the significant cost and spectrum savings delivered by DRM (i.e. using Single Frequency Network deployment) the DRM Workshop "Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) - Clever Radio for Smart Countries" is to be held on Thursday 5th March 1400-1500 in Safir room 2. The event will offer participants an opportunity to learn more about digital radio and to experience the full DRM technology.  Attendees will be invited to ask their own questions about the practical steps needed to create a healthy digital system involving the key stakeholders: listeners, regulator, broadcasters and the receiver manufacturing industry. The new Avion DRM radio has recently been unveiled in India and participants will be able to see and hear for themselves how the listener can experience more choice, enhanced sound quality, text and additional data services. 
 
Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairman, is excited about this premier ABU event which has been supported by the Consortium for quite a number of years now because: "We can bring the latest developments to a wide range of specialists while having DRM championed by some of our best DRM experts and practitioners."

World Radio Day relays round the world

ABU members will be taking part in a round-the-world broadcast relay to celebrate the 4th World Radio Day.
 
On Friday 13 February 2015, participating broadcasters around the globe will devote at least half-an-hour of their programming to the WRD 2015 themes "Innovation and youth in radio".
 
The main organisers, the European Broadcasting Union, in partnership with the ABU and other broadcasting unions, will also offer three short optional pre-recorded radio features devoted to Radio and Youth, Radio and Innovation and the History of Humanitarian Use of Radio: UN Radio.

ABU launches new excellence award for broadcast engineers

The ABU is calling for entries for a new award for engineering excellence.

The ABU Developing Broadcasters' Excellence Award recognises innovation and excellence and adds to a stable of engineering awards offered by the Union.

Sponsored by Sony, the new award is open to staff or former staff of ABU's developing broadcaster members within the Asia-Pacific region only and comprises a citation, a commemorative trophy and a fully-paid fellowship to carry out a study tour of Sony's main technology centre in Japan or any of its other prestigious institutions.

DRM - Strongest presence to date at ABU Digital Symposium

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is the principal sponsor of the 5-8 March ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium (DBS) in Kuala Lumpur, one of the premier digital events in Asia.
“With the most significant DRM developments underway in India, especially, and Asia Pacific generally, we felt the time is right to become deeply involved with this significant initiative. ABU to launch next phase of disaster warning campaign at DBS

The ABU is launching the next phase of its Early Warning and Disaster Risk Reduction campaign, to help members deal with the increasing frequency of natural disasters.

The ABU Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Broadcast Media Initiative will be the focus of a special workshop on 8 March 2013, during the Union's Digital Broadcast Symposium in Kuala Lumpur.

ABU DB Symposium 2013 Offers Fascinating Line-up, Attracts Broadcasting Industry

 
Many leading industry players are participating in the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2013 and contributing to it in various ways. The symposium, with the theme Next-Gen Media Space and the Connected World, 9th in the series, is organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union as a key forum towards development of the industry in Asia-Pacific and other regions of the broadcasting world. This Year's offering is a mix of conference, workshops, a 60 booth exhibition and several value-add workshops and meetings conducted by other organisations. Last year's DB Symposium attracted more than 1000 participants. The event is closely supported by the leading lights in the broadcasting industry from the equipment manufacturers, system integrators, transmission network integrators, frequency planners, Internet and broadcast service providers, digital system proponents
and regulatory agencies.

The event will have an equipment exhibition with participation from Harris, WorldDMB, Sony, Grass Valley, Ideal Systems, Playbox Technology, Nevion, Conax, Front Porch Digital, Tektronix, Nautel, Measat, Rohde & Schwarz, Net Insight, Miranda, Kathrein, LS telcom, Asia-Pacific Broadcasting, Mahajak, Salzbrenner Stagetec Mediagroup, Exir Broadcasting, EMS Test Measurement, Gencom Technology, MediaCorp, VSN, RFS, SM CNS, Enensys, Lemo, Orban, Radio Television Malaysia and Asia Media. More are expected to join.

DB Symposium will also feature 16 dedicated workshops conducted by many of the above and also Dolby, DVB, Dalet and the ABU. The latter workshop will address TV content concepts and content creation. The main conference (6-8 March) features 11 sessions with 60 eminent speakers from all walks of the industry making presentations. The emphasis is on next generation services and employing Internet connectivity.

Six value-add workshops will be conducted alongside the symposium together with some other organisations. These are ITU-ABU-AIBD Workshop on Digital Migration, IPPTARABU Workshop on HDTV Operations, DRM Workshop, ABU Workshop on Implications of Broadcasters' Treaty, ABU Workshop on Olympic Sports Coverage and Production of Sporting Events and UNESCAP Workshop on EWB-Implementation and Operations.

ABU supports World Radio Day 2013

13 February 2013 is the day proclaimed by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate radio as a strong, vital and necessary medium for society.

The ABU is part of the International Committee for the World Radio Day (WRD), constituted by agreement among the most representative broadcasting organisations that supported the implementation of World Radio Day within the UN and other international bodies.

DRM Consortium in co-operation with ABU is holding a July webinar on Emergency Warning and DRM


The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is joining forces on July 16th (0800 GMT) with the Asia–Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) to run a webinar on using features of DRM as an Emergency warning system. Senior members of the DRM Consortium and ABU will be presenting this special feature and giving answers to some of the frequently asked questions on this topic.

Sharad Sadhu, Director ABU Technology, is pleased to play a part in this project: "This is the first joint webinar organised with the DRM Consortium on one of the critical concerns for broadcasters in Asia. We welcome this collaboration, a first of its kind."

Lindsay Cornell, Chair of the DRM Technical Committee says: "Emergency warning systems can be built using DRM as the core distribution technology. This could offer a vital service in time of need to
communities around the world."

NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary Uday K Varma exhorted the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) to set up a world class Broadcasting Research Centre in India since it is a major contributor to the broadcasting business in Asia.

Regional event helps add another dimension to industry

The ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2011 takes place from 8 to 11 March in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Judging by the response by the broadcasters and the rest of the industry, the highly regarded regional event helps add the 3rd dimension to the broadcasting industry in capacity building and equipping them to enhance their services in step with rapid advances in technology and content offering.

This multi-dimensional event has again received a huge response from the entire broadcasting industry. Broadcast Australia is the Principal Sponsor for the event and the four Major Sponsors are Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), Harris, Sony and ATDI.

The proceedings of the conference are being webcast live with a choice of low bit-rate video+ audio stream or audio-only stream.

The first DRM+ trial in the Asia-Pacific Region takes off

The two-day DRM+ technical trial conducted in Colombo on 29-30 November. The DRM Consortium has joined forces with the ABU, SLBC, Deutsche Welle, and Leibniz University-Hannover to run the trial and showcase it to the broadcasters and the radio industry. One of the SLBC FM transmitters in Colombo was used for the trial.
