According to a Nielsen India report, after print, radio has the second-highest ad-attention, followed by TV and streaming services. In terms of ad-effectiveness, radio ads are the second most effective in driving purchase intent, with TV being the most effective medium," according to the report Power of Radio commissioned by Music Broadcast that operates Radio City FM channel.

I am sure that what I write below will find a resonance with quite a few readers who are senior citizens. An electro-mechanical contraption, sometimes as big as a 21-inch television set, vanished from the scene altogether some three decades ago - giving way to smaller devices, gradually reduced and ultimately miniaturised to a shirt-pocket size. Yes, I mean the big radio of yesteryear powered by vacuum tubes, ironically called valves, metamorphosing into a wonder creation of semi-conductor technology called pocket radios or transistors. Finally, the entry of TV into the drawing room has vanquished the dignified and respectable presence of the radio in middle class homes in what can be termed the tragedy of decent entertainment at home.

The announcement of FM phase III and auctions this month, though long overdue, have come as a perfect anniversary gift in the tenth year of private FM radio. While the opening of private FM radio a decade ago in the four metros "breathed life into a dead medium", phase II and now phase III will lead to further expansion in the country to tier-II and tier-III towns.
