Hear the voice of the marginalized

BANGALORE: If you have not tuned into 90.4 MHZ, then do so. In today's life, when the voices of marginalized communities are lost in the hustle-bustle of the city, this radio station provides an opportunity for these secluded communities to express themselves. Imparting the real meaning of broadcast media, the channel brings fourth the voices that are heard the least. Sex workers, transgenders, rag-pickers, auto drivers, physically disabled, slum-dwellers and HIV positive persons, all are part of this community radio station called Radio Active.

Vanya Radio Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=707Jn8o3-gQ

Sajan Venniyoor comments :

First things first: this is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the "first tribal community radio station" in the world. It is probably not even the first in India. There are literally hundreds of tribal community radio stations in Latin America and North America, in New Zealand, Australia, PNG and the Asia Pacific in general, and no doubt dozens more in East Asia.

Secondly, this is not a community radio station. It is owned and run by Vanya (a govt-run 'society') and the Tribal Welfare Dept. of Madhya Pradesh. As one can see from the YouTube video, it seems to be run entirely by non-tribals. The announcer speaks chaste Hindi. The station starts the day's broadcast with 'Vande Mataram', that well known tribal song.

It is commendable that at least some of the programmes broadcast by Vanya Radio are in Bhili, a tribal dialect, but that does not make it a tribal radio station. AIR broadcasts in dozens of tribal dialects in central India and in the North East, where it also runs five 'community radio stations'.
That does not make AIR a tribal or community broadcaster.

According to the news story, "the radio station will play an important role in disseminating information about various welfare schemes". That is what state-run radio stations do. AIR has done that for nearly 65 years now, at immense expense, without any marked success.

Ravenshaw Radio 90.4 Cuttack testing

I am in Odisha now deputed by NIAR to particpate in Mock Drill at Cyclone Shelter.

While travelling through Cuttack the other day, on my cellphone radio, I heard some 90.4 MHz but could not identify it. The next day while travelling through Cuttack again, checked the frequncy and got id as "Revinsa Radio". Upon calling on the announced telephone number got information that they had restarted testing from previous day ie 16 Dec 2010 ! It is the Community Radio station of Ravenshaw University, Cuttack. The correct name is "Ravenshaw Radio", also visited the station later .

Launch of Radio Mewat

We are happy to announce the launch of Radio Mewat by SMART NGO. Though still at its testing stage we have started broadcasting a two hour program twice a day. It will be inaugurated and launched formally later this month. The frequency allotted to us is 90.4 FM. Our broadcast timing is 8am-10 am and 3pm to 5pm. The transmitter and Antennae was provided to us by UNESCO and was procured and installed by NOMAD India. The radio is headquartered in Nuh, the administrative block of district Mewat, a recently carved out district of Haryana.

About Mewat:
Mewat is an extremely backward area and marginalized district in the state of Haryana. Just 75 km away from the national capital it is seeped in poverty and illiteracy. Lack of potable water, health facilities, sanitation and hygiene are some of the concerns of this area. The radio could be an important tool for inclusive development and could assist in increasing the participation of the community in the process of development through information dissemination.

With its headquarters in the administrative town of Nuh, Radio Mewat will reach out to a niche target of roughly 4 to 5 lakh people. The Radio will have a reach of 15km (radius).

For a district like Mewat the community radio could play an important role- first in informing and then in helping access the information for self development. Acquiring knowledge is the first step toward change, whether this change is social, economic, cultural, legal, or political. Information is the catalyst, fuel, and product of this process of transformation that can stimulate change and a desire to change. With an agenda to include the excluded population the Community radio can be a unique and innovative tool for development.

The radio will help in disseminating information and will meet the objective of supporting "developmental and promotional activities" with a view to securing greater inclusion, particularly among weaker sections, low income groups and in backward regions. Radio Mewat is broadcasting programs on the local issue, the recently held Panchayat Elections, locally popular songs sung by the Mirasis, commmunicable diseases like swine flu, dengue etc.The District Collector, Mr CR Rana, has been very supportive and has always encouraged creative mediums for informing and educating the masses.
