The reconstructed Kokavil Multi Purpose Transmission Tower was commissioned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 6th June. It is considered as the tallest ever transmission tower in the entire South Asian region. The tower has been reconstructed at a cost of 450 million rupees.
The funds for the project were collectively provided by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the Independent Television Network. Foundation stone for the new tower was laid in August 2009. Construction work was carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Mass Media and Information. The height of the tower is 174 meters. Secretary to the Ministry W.B.Ganegala says the tower will provide clear radio and TV signals throughout the area meeting the needs of the public in the north.

The Kokavil was firstly constructed in 1981 to facilitate the people in the North to view television broadcast clearly. However, it was destroyed by the tiger terrorists on 11th of July 1990.
