Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) to close down all FM regional services

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) will close down all FM regional services with effect from 31st May '23 as they were loss making.

SLBC Hindi revised schedule due to transmitter valve failure

Urgent and Important Announcement 

There is sudden failure in shortwave transmitter valve of SLBC.

Due to which Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation management has made few changes in the air time of Hindi Service.

From tomorrow, 22nd May 2018 the broadcasting on shortwave is available between 2 slots :
1) Morning 6 am to 6.30 am (0030-0100 UTC) - 11905 kHz
2) Morning 7.30 am to 8 am (0200-0230 UTC) - 11905 kHz

But on the website the streaming will be available for entire 2 hours i.e. from 6.00 am to 8.00 am (0030-0230 UTC)

Please note this change is temporary for about 1 month and all we need to keep patience until the transmitter gets repaired.

I hope all Listeners will get extra feed on 1 hour on the internet by SLBC.

Thanks to Siddi Farook for continued support to Hindi Service inspite of such tricky situation.

Hope all the listeners from India, Nepal , Pakistan time zones will listen in these time on short waves  and web site stream dependant listeners will note enjoy the broadcasting.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Serive Hindi transmission back on air

Sri Lanka broadcastng service's hindi transmission was noted back on air wef 21st March' 2017.

Tentative schedule due to maintainance :

21st March to 25th March 2017 - 0645 - 0800 IST (0115 - 0230 UTC) on 11905 kHz
26th March to 15th April 2017 - 0730 - 0800 IST (0200 - 0230 UTC) on 11905 kHz
After 15th April 2017 back at 0645 - 0800 IST (0115 - 0230 UTC) on 11905 kHz

There's no change in internet broadcast.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation - Golden Jubilee Stamp & FDC


The Sri Lanka Philatelic Bureau of the Department of Posts has issued a new postal stamp to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in the denomination of Rs.10.00 on 5th January 2017.

                          The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation - Golden Jubilee First Day Cover

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Service commenced on 22nd July 1924 as a test transmission. It was launched officially on 16th December 1925.The test transmission was initiated by broadcasting a speech made by the then Governor Sir William Henry Manning, addressing the Lanka Electrical Engineers' annual meeting. The broadcasting service was officially inaugurated by broadcasting the speech made by the then Governor Sir Hugh Clifford addressing the general public from his office situated at Fort.

On 05th October 1945 the Ceylon Broadcasting service was instituted as a separate government Department while arrangements were made to construct a new building for the Service at the Torrington Square.

The station was known by many names from time to time such as " Wireless Broadcasting" and "Colombo Broadcasting". It functioned under the purview of the Postal Department until 30th September 1949.

From 5th October 1979,it was made independent and came to be known as Radio Ceylon.

On 5th January 1967 the Department of Broadcasting was converted to a government Corporation by way of Act No.37 of 1966.

The Corporation was inaugurated by the Hon. Prime Minister and came to be known as the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation.

On 22nd May 1972 with the enactment of the first Republican Constitution, the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation was renamed as the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

On 5th January 2017 the SLBC celebrates its Golden Jubilee by relocating its core functional Divisions in a new Administrative Building to be declared open by H.E. President Maithreepala Sirisena and the Hon. Prime Minister RanilWickramasinghe. A major Project aiming to renovate SLBC's studio complex will also reach completion by the same date.

Sri Lanka state broadcaster, military to get some VOA transmitting assets

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's state-run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), and the military will get some equipment from a closed Voice of America relay station, which is being dismantled.

The Voice of America made its last broadcast from the relay station in Iranawila, Chilaw on June 10, 2016, amid budget cuts and declining viewership for shortwave radio listening.

The VOA station had two 500 kiloWatt Marconi transmitters and six 250 kW transmitters when it began operations over 16 years ago, according to publicly available data.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation turns 50 today

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation marks the 50th anniversary today. The corporation has organized a number of programmes to mark this event during the New Year. The inaugural ceremony in this connection will be held today at the Kumarathunga studio under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe. The newly constructed administrative building and modified studio complex will be declared open by the president.

A commemorative stamp and a first day cover will be issued to mark the golden jubilee anniversary of the SLBC. An investigative magazine regarding the history of Sri Lanka's broadcasting will also be launched. An awarding ceremony will also be held to felicitate the staff members of SLBC.

Project to modernize the studio complex of the SLBC commences

The project to modernize the studio complex of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation commenced on 21st Oct'16. It began at the auspicious time of 8.56 a.m. under the auspices of Chairman Attorney-at-Law Nanda Muruththettuwegama. The refurbishment activities are to be carried out at a cost of 200 million rupees.
The project is expected to be completed by 5th January next year which marks the 50th anniversary of national radio becoming a corporation.

SLBC launches a new Radio Service

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, the originator of broadcasting services in the country launched a new Service from today. Named as “The Times Radio”, the new service will broadcast latest sports news together with musical programmes. The new service was inaugurated under the patronage of the Chairman of the SLBC Hudson Samarasinghe at 9.30 am today.

DW Trincomalee on noted on 1548 kHz at 1730 UTC

Jose Jacob from NIAR, Hyderabad observed on 8th Jan 2012 medium wave frequency of 1548 kHz was on air at 1730 UTC tune in till 1829 UTC sign off. (ie 11.00 pm to midnight local time in India) with Deutsche Welle ID via Trincomalee, Srilanka playing non stop music & regular announcements in German, English,French, Russian & Arabic...."This is Deutsche Welle, the external broadcasting services of Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, we are sorry you are unable to receive our regular programs at this moment." 1548 kHz was a popular DW channel from Trincomalle, including DRM . DW has closed down this facility & stopped all broadcasts on 3oth Oct 2011, this transmitting facility was suppose to be handed over to Sri Lankan authorities by Jan 2012, probably handed over & SLBC engineers were testing ?

SLBC is to start a special round the clock Muslim service.

Speaking at prize giving ceremony of the Quran recital in connection with the holy month of Ramazan last year at Ananda Samarakoon studio of the SLBC on 8th Jan 2012 Chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Hudson Samarasinghe said that a special Muslim service which would broadcast round the clock will be started on the forthcoming birthday of the holy prophet Mohammed.

The ‘haunted’ past of Radio Ceylon

Walking into the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) buildings at Torrington Square, one would immediately feel the historical value of the place, but most people would not know just how valuable it is. Our SLBC is Asia's first broadcasting corporation. Radio Ceylon started in Sri Lanka then Ceylon, paving the way for many other radio stations that later came to be celebrated around the world, inspiring countries such as Hong Kong, Korea, India and Singapore to enter the world of wireless media.

Sri Lanka :Tallest communication tower in the South Asia region declared open in Kokavil

The reconstructed Kokavil Multi Purpose Transmission Tower was commissioned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 6th June. It is considered as the tallest ever transmission tower in the entire South Asian region. The tower has been reconstructed at a cost of 450 million rupees.
The funds for the project were collectively provided by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the Independent Television Network. Foundation stone for the new tower was laid in August 2009. Construction work was carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Mass Media and Information. The height of the tower is 174 meters. Secretary to the Ministry W.B.Ganegala says the tower will provide clear radio and TV signals throughout the area meeting the needs of the public in the north.

The Kokavil was firstly constructed in 1981 to facilitate the people in the North to view television broadcast clearly. However, it was destroyed by the tiger terrorists on 11th of July 1990.

SLBC to launch new radio channel for fishing community

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) will launch Sayura FM, a new radio channel which caters to the fishing community, by the end of March. Fisheries Ministry Media Secretary Nandana Rajapaksa said the new channel will air its programs from midnight to 4.00 am daily.

SLBC frequency used by rogue station: TRC

A special investigation was launched following information that the transmitter found at a rogue radio station in Kalpitiya belonged to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).
