Voice of America Names First Eastern Europe Chief

Voice of America Names First Eastern Europe Chief

The Voice of America has named Myroslava Gongadze as the network's first ever Eastern Europe Chief. Gongadze moves into the new position after serving as the Chief of the VOA Ukrainian language service in Washington, D.C. She will move to Kyiv, Ukraine, in 2022. In this new role, she will lead expanded coverage of a region threatened by hybrid war and disinformation. As a Russian troop buildup intensifies along the Ukrainian border and in Russian-occupied Crimea, Gongadze will be covering for a global audience the Kremlin's aggressive posture in Eastern Europe as well as the impact of Russia's and China's influence throughout the region.

A veteran award-winning journalist and broadcaster, Gongadze joined VOA in 2004. Recognized for her reporting on the eve of Ukraine's Orange Revolution, she also covered developments during the Euromaidan revolution and ensuing crisis period. She moderated Ukraine's first nationally televised post-Maidan general election debates in 2014. Acknowledged by numerous media outlets for her expertise on U.S.-Ukraine relations, Gongadze appeared multiple times in Focus Magazine's list of the 100 most influential women in Ukraine. She recently completed a yearlong Nieman Foundation for Journalism Fellowship at Harvard University where she focused on strategies for covering Russia's information warfare.

"I am thrilled that Myroslava will be taking on this pivotal role at such a crucial time in the country and in the region she knows – and has covered - so well for so many years," said Acting VOA Director, Yolanda Lόpez. "This appointment of such a seasoned reporter into Ukraine's capital city directly aligns with VOA's audience-first approach, as we continue to move our journalists swiftly into places where they can provide firsthand coverage of critical regions and produce stories that our audience needs most," López added.

"I am honored to build on my seventeen-year career at Voice of America in my new role as Eastern Europe Chief," said Gongadze. "VOA already plays a crucial role in Ukraine as a trusted news source and example of impartial fact-based journalism. I am looking forward to bringing coverage of Ukraine, a key battlefield in the global fight for democracy, and the wider region to global audiences," Gongadze remarked.

17th Edition of the Global Radio Guide (Winter2021-22) Now Available

17th Edition of the Global Radio Guide (Winter2021-22) Now Available

On any given day, the People's Republic of China (PRC) fueled by a meteoric rise in the country's economics, politics, the covid pandemic, cyber security and human rights issues, Beijing Winter 2022 Olympics, and a strident expansion of the country's military forces dominates global news headlines and news cycles. These headlines include China's recent tensions with Taiwan, whichare said to be the worst in forty years, and its other neighbors in the South China Sea region.

As China's influence continues to expandworldwide,so have the country's huge radio broadcast services. Local, regional, and international mediumwave and shortwave networks carry news and programming toaudiences around the world.Since these services are government-sponsored you arehearing China's CommunistParty's (CCP) perspective of worldwide events as they unfold. Topping the list of the country's media outlets is China Radio International (CRI) the largest and most widely heard station in China.

For those who want to follow all the ongoing storylines originating from the PRC, Gayle Van Horn's 17th Edition of her Amazon bestselling Global Radio Guide (Winter 2021-22) has all the details you need to monitor all the radio services from the Land of the Red Dragon.

Her feature is one of the most comprehensive articles ever written on the Chinese radio broadcast system. Complete schedules for all China radio services, a section of how to ID national stations broadcasting in Chinese, and links to videos with CRI IDs in 45 languages on the author's YouTube channel that are just some of the materials you will find in this all-important cover story in the GRG. This is an indispensable guide to for the radio listener to hear China as tensions in the region continue to heat up.
China's broadcastersare not the only focus of this completely updated edition of the GRG, though. Worldwide, tensions are continuing to escalate, and – in another case of what is old becoming new – people around the world are once again turning to shortwave radio to place themselves on the front lines.

With the help of the GRG, you can tune in to shortwave broadcast stations from other hotspots such as Cuba, India, Iran, North/South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many other counties. If you have a shortwave radio receiver, SDR or Internet connection, pair it with this unique radio resource to know when and where to listen to the world.

This newest edition of the GRG carries on the tradition of those before it with an in-depth, 24-hour station/frequency guide with schedules for selected AM band, longwave, and shortwave radio stations. This unique resource is the only radio publication that lists by-hour schedules that include all language services, frequencies, and world target areas for over 500 stations worldwide. The schedules included in this edition of the GRG are valid from 31 October 2021 until 26 March 2022, the B21 broadcast schedule period.

The GRG includes listings of DX radio programs and Internet website addresses for many of the stations in the book. There are also entries for time and frequency stations as well as some of the more "intriguing" transmissions one can find on the shortwave radio bands.

Gayle has also updated her now-famous SDRBuyer's Guide, a must-have compendium that helps you navigate through the revolutionary world of software-defined radios (SDRs), the new digital frontier of the radio hobby.

Also new in this 17th edition, James Careless, in an article that originally appeared in Radio World, looks at the current stateofshortwave receiver technology. Dr. Adrian Peterson of AWR looks back at the early days of Philippine broadcasting. David Harris has written a review of the bhi NES10-2MK4 Noise Cancelling Speaker. Spectrum Monitor columnist Fred Waterer will take you on a guided tour of shortwave music programs from around the world.

There are updated columns including the latest radio news in Bits & Bytes, current radio QSL information and addresses, the Best of the Best DX shortwave program listings, and a listing of radio station Internet websites.

This edition also has introductory articles for beginners on Traveling the World via Shortwave Radio Broadcasts, Monitoring the Shortwave Action Bands, and Teak's latest greatly expanded frequency list of HF non-broadcast radio stations worldwide.

Global Radio listeners are routinely entertained with unique perspectives to events, music, culture, history, and news from other countries that you will not see or hear on your local or national broadcast channels. Global Radio broadcasts are not restricted by country borders or oceans and can travel thousands of miles, reaching millions of listeners worldwide, now in over 300 different languages and dialects.

Whether you monitor shortwave radio broadcasts, amateur radio operators, or aeronautical, maritime, government, or military communications in the HF radio spectrum, this book has the frequencies to help you to hear it all. Teak Publishing's Global Radio Guide "brings the world to you."

New DRM on shortwave transmissions from Germany

New DRM on shortwave transmissions from Germany

"funklust", campus broadcaster at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, stands out as one of the radio stations with the most diverse transmission paths in the world. Recently, the station has revamped one of its digital broadcast paths: funklust in Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) on shortwave is now broadcast using a new, modern transmitter.

In the summer of 2003, funklust (known as "bit eXpress" back then) was broadcast digitally for the first time on shortwave (SW) using a Telefunken transmitter. Transmission via DRM on FM radio later followed in 2013, with funklust becoming one of the first DRM radio programs in the world to be broadcast on FM. The entire broadcasting apparatus for DRM on shortwave has now been modernized and funklust has been broadcasting with brand new equipment since October 2021. A Fraunhofer ContentServer R7 is used to broadcast the program, allowing audio content and attractive data services, such as Journaline, TextMessage+ (TM+), and even Emergency Warning Functionality (EWF), to be put on air with ease. The funklust transmitter requires an average transmission power of 250 W and operates at the transmission frequency 15.785 MHz. Reception reports received so far confirm that the program can be received not only in Germany but also in Russia, the US, Norway, Finland and New Zealand.

Until recently, a dedicated radio device was required to receive DRM transmissions. Starwaves, a developer of DRM receiver solutions, worked closely with Fraunhofer IIS to develop an Android app, which can be used for DRM reception on mobile devices. The Starwaves radio app is available in the Amazon App store and the Google Play Store and provides Android cellphones and tablets with entertainment, text information and emergency warnings via DRM digital radio — without the need to enter into a contract, independent of the user's mobile network and based on innovative Fraunhofer technology.

Via Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM)

Digital Radio Mondiale — DRM for short — is the digital successor of traditional AM and FM radio. The DRM standard comprises two major configurations: One is for broadcasts on short, medium, and long wave up to 30 MHz and provides large coverage areas and low power consumption with improved quality services compared to FM. The configuration for VHF bands above 30 MHz, including FM, is tailored for local and regional coverage with broadcaster-controlled transmissions and provides stereo services, including surround sound. All DRM configurations use the xHE-AAC audio codec that was largely developed by Fraunhofer IIS. DRM offers high audio quality combined with a wealth of expanded functions and data services, one of which is Journaline, a teletext service for radio via which listeners can access news, the latest sports results, weather forecasts, travel tips, and even educational offers — without an internet connection.

Campus broadcaster "funklust"

Originally a small experimental station with a few workers and occasional broadcasts, the project has since developed into a 24/7 complete radio program. During normal radio broadcasting, over 30 students and alumni of funklust e.V. volunteer at the station, working throughout the academic year to produce a diverse program. Quite a few students have already received training through a comprehensive training program comprising workshops and advanced training weekends. Several former members now work for large German broadcasters such as BR or SWR. From a technical point of view, the station began broadcasting as DRM shortwave radio, originally at the frequency 15.896 MHz. Over the years, the transmission paths have developed extensively. Today, funklust can be received via an online stream or DAB+ (181.936 MHz, Band 6A) in and around Erlangen, Germany. In addition, it continues to be broadcast digitally via DRM (DRM-AM 15.785 MHz and DRM-FM 87.9 MHz) and in analog via "Little Joe" on medium wave (1485 kHz). The shows "funklust auftakt" and "funklust mischpult" can also be received via the Nuremberg FM frequency of max neo (106.5 MHz).

Ruxandra Obreja, the Consortium Chairman, says that: "We are trying to make our DRM IBC event bigger and more attractive than ever. By doing this we hope to impress on all those interested how much progress DRM has made in both takeup and receiver solutions over these last trying months. It will be a recap of the great activities of 2020-2021 and a good starting point for next year's decisions and steps. DRM is more attractive and in tune with the needs of the world than ever, with its energy and spectrum cost savings and its extra features and possibilities like delivering education and emergency warning."

KTWR announces expansion of India DRM block

KTWR will stop its computer-generated Tamil experimental broadcasts on 15200kHz on 26th Sept'21 (last Sunday of September).

Starting in October '21, the 15200kHz Sunday broadcasts will start at 0957 UTC. Exile Govt in Myanmar launches 'Radio NUG'

The  National League for Democracy in Myanmar,  ousted by the military junta earlier this year,  launched 'Radio NUG' to stay connected with the people.

Test transmission began on Friday, 20 Aug 2021  on 17710 kHz and  initially  will air twice daily for 30 minutes at 8 am (0130 UTC) and 8 pm (1330 UTC), Myanmar local time in Burmese. Radio NUG  provides updates on junta abuses, Covid -19 news and self-defense updates.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the civilian administration of Aung San Suu Kyi was deposed in a February coup, sparking huge pro-democracy protests and a bloody military crackdown.  Dissident lawmakers from her party, the National Unity Government (NUG), in hiding or in exile, are behind this radio broadcast.

Digital Radio awareness initiative launched by Indian DRM enthusiast

Dr Thaminana KR, an Indian enthusiast and pioneer in promoting DRM in his city Vizag (Andhra Pradesh state), has launched a DRM nationwide initiative of popularising the audio and advanced services available from the 35 MW DRM transmitters broadcasting all over India in pure DRM (some) and simulcast (all).

The aim of the video conferences and practical services in the car is to create awareness and demonstrate the advantages of DRM car radios to car showroom executives, sales managers, and their customers. According to estimations, there are about 3 million new Indian cars with incorporated DRM radio receivers on the roads. The sessions are also intended to gather feedback from car showroom sales managers and DRM car radio owners.

Dr Thaminana visited several car showrooms in in his native Vizag and gave live DRM car radio demonstrations to sales managers and customers. This was followed from June 22nd by virtual conferences and presentations and actual demos in Ranchi, Hyderabad, and Chennai. His plan includes over 30 more DRM car radio demos video conferences and practical car demos to be conducted in 34 more DRM transmission coverage areas by the beginning of December.

Convinced by the power of DRM, Dr Thaminana proves what an individual initiative can achieve even in a country the size of India.

"We salute this initiative", said Ruxandra Obreja, DRM chairman, "thought out and executed by one individual who is convinced of the superiority of the standard in all environments and for a large number of Indians, whether at home but mainly in cars. He is addressing the showroom staff and directly the car owners. Unlike other expensive marketing campaign this is a down up initiative, authentic and impactful."

Ex All India Radio engineer is minister in new cabinet

Devusingh Chauhan is the new Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications, Govt. of India.

Before taking the plunge into politics, 57-year-old Devusinh Chauhan served as a broadcast engineer with the All India Radio for over 12 years.

After 63 years, VOA Bangla service to end radio broadcasts

Voice of America Bangla language service FM, MW and shortwave radio transmissions officially end on July 17, 2021, after 63 years of serving Bangladesh and the Bangla-speaking Indian states of West Bengal, Tripure and Assam. Simultaneously, the service's television and social media content will expand considerably, as these are platforms more heavily used by VOA Bangla's 16 million weekly audience members.

"When VOA Bangla launched in January 1958, Bangladesh was known as 'East Pakistan' and it was a territory under martial law with no television or private radio," said John Lippman, Acting VOA Programming Director. "VOA's shortwave radio transmissions from outside the borders were a lifeline to the Bangla-speaking population for independent news and information."

While the service's shortwave radio audience is now less than one percent, VOA Bangla social media audiences have grown significantly in recent years. Engagement actions on the Twitter account have risen 54% over the previous year, while video views on Instagram are up 274% in the same period.

"Dozens of domestic television and radio stations compete for Bangla-speaking audiences, as well as an increasing number of digital sources," Lippman noted. "As the demand for TV and online access to news in Bangladesh expands, VOA's Bangla service program offerings need to be on the platforms its audience already is most active."

"VOA Bangla radio broadcasts brought world events to its audiences since the days when radio was the primary news medium," Acting VOA Bangla Service Chief Satarupa Barua told staff this month. "It was a staple in our upbringing, a household name. We will build on that reputation, increasing our presence on media that is now far more heavily used than short wave and medium wave radio."

During the final days of its radio broadcasts, the service will broadcast retrospective programming, looking back at the changes in the country since 1958. "Because of our service's history in Bangladesh, working at VOA has been the 'dream job' for many of us. With the coming changes, it will continue to be," Barua added.

This change in radio programming will not affect broadcasts of "Lifeline", a 30-minute daily radio program in the Rohingya language, spoken by Muslim refugees in Bangladesh who fled ethnic violence in Myanmar. Produced by the Bangla service, the program launched in July 2019.
