The weekly BCDX Net operating on the 40 Meter Amateur Band in South India celebrated its 23rd anniversary yesterday 27 Nov 2011.
As it is the practice on Sundays, the BCDX net was controlled yesterday by Mr.Sanil Deep, VU3SIO on 7085 kHz LSB at 0300-0330 UTC (8.30 to 9.00 am IST.) Several hams checked into the net and conveyed their greetings on the occasion.
This Net was started on Sunday November 27, 1988 by a small group of Amateurs viz. ShanmughasundaramVU2FOT, Victor Goonetilleke 4S7VK, Jose Jacob VU2JOS and some SWL's.
The whole concept of this Net started when these Hams used to meet regularly on the band and exchanged DX news at various times. This later transformed into a regular Net which benefited many people. This Net is conducted on Sunday mornings for the advantage of those who are keenly interested in Broadcast Band Dxing.The unique thing about this Net is that is helped Hams to become SWL Dxers and SWL's to become Hams!
On a typical Sunday morning,the Net control starts the Net by calling in for regular check-ins. After about 10 minutes he gives the latest DX tips that he has gathered and later other stations also takes turn in exchanging their DX information. It has all the ingredients of a live two way DX program and continues for about 30 minutes depending on the traffic. For some time it was known as SWL DX Net.
he Net grew up with VU2KAK Anil, VU3SIO Sanil,VU2ISR Harsha, VU3ITI Varadhan, VU3DJQ Raman, VU2NGB Binu,VU2BNP Prahalad, VU3BGK Neel, VU2ICI Mohan, VU2MUD Madhu etc.joining in.
In 1989 a monthly newsletter was published on behalf of the Net by VU2FOT which was unfortunately discontinued after some issues. In May 1991 a BCDX Net Convention was held at Kozhikode which was a big success & attended by over 85 people including Victor Goonetilleke 4S7VK from Sri Lanka. A Ham station with the special call sign VU2F was also operational at the convention venue. A DX contest sponsored by Radio Netherlands was organized on 29 & 30th January 1994 in collaboration with Union of Asian DXERS, Sri Lanka. Special QSL cards were issued by Radio Netherlands for the occasion. In 1995 a special QSL card was also issued to mark the 7th anniversary of the Net by VU2BNP. In 1989 Adventist World Radio Wavescan broadcasted a special program on the occasion of 10th anniversary of the BCDX Net. Articles on BCDX Net has also appeared in "NIAR Ham News" July 1998 issue, "Hamfest India" 1998 souvenir and other DX publications and was also mentioned in various DX programs several times. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of BCDX NET, Mr.Sanil Deep broadcast a special program in Wavescan program of Adventist World Radio on Sunday 23 Nov 2008. Special QSLs were also issued by BCDX Net for the occasion.
The BCDX Net has been very regular all these long 23 years, thanks to the dedicated Net Controllers. Now a days it is conducted on Sunday mornings at 0830 IST (0300 UTC ) on 7085 kHz USB on 40 meter Amateur Band which covers South India & Sri Lanka. Occasionally it was also conducted on the 20 Meter Band 14150 kHz at 2130 IST ( 1600 UTC). Currently the regular net controller is Sanil Deep VU3SIO and assisted from time to time by VU2JOS etc.

VOA Ends Croatian Broadcasts

Washington, D.C. — November 23, 2011
Voice of America's Croatian Service signs off for the last time Wednesday, after 19 years of broadcast history that began during the bloody breakup of the former Yugoslavia, and ends with Croatia's emergence as a democratic member of the European community.
VOA Director David Ensor called the service "a model of journalistic integrity that provided the people of Croatia with fair and impartial news during the dark days of civil war in the Balkans." Ensor commended the service, which he said, "served as a vital source of independent reporting
and insight into American policy."
Voice of America established its Croatian Language Service on February 20, 1992, a time when the most brutal war since World War II was raging in the Balkans.
Spun off from the former Yugoslav Service which had been broadcasting to the area since 1943, VOA Croatian broadcasts began on radio, but were quickly expanded into television. The service was one of VOA's first to establish an online presence.
VOA Croatian's five-minute TV NewsFlash was broadcast daily on eight affiliate stations and focused on American news of relevance to Croatian audiences, including business, science, American culture, and politics.
The popular Breakfast Show, a roundup of US, Croatian and world news, aired on radio for 19 years, without a single day of interruption. An evening radio show aired on shortwave and ten affiliate FM stations in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In addition to news coverage, VOA Croatian served as a source of entertainment and cultural programming for more than a decade. Nearly 700 episodes of Saturday's American Cultural Magazine were aired, with stories on leading entertainers, from blues guitar legend B.B. King, to Los Lobos, the Grammy-winning Los Angeles band that performed in Zagreb in 2010.
VOA Croatian Service Chief Zorz Crmaric called going off the air a "bittersweet moment" that comes as the country begins a new chapter in European integration. He noted Croatia is now a NATO member and is scheduled to join the European Union in 2013.

Vatican Radio introduces new DRM broadcast towards India

Starting with the new winter season effective 30th Oct, 2011 Vatican Radio has introduced new DRM broadcast beamed to India on 15190 kHz at 15:30-15:50 UTC, Sunday-Friday, in English; the same broadcast on Saturdays is 15:30-16:00 UTC and it carries the Mass in English.Vatican Radio started this DRM service to promote this standard in India considering the plan undertaken by the Indian Government to switch to digital.

Eutelsat statement on deliberate jamming of satellite signal

Paris, 17 November 2011
Eutelsat categorically refutes recent reports that claim it is generating interference to its own satellites in order to prevent reception in Iran of international Farsi satellite channels. These allegations are in total contradiction with reality. They are also totally inconsistent with the statement issued in September by the BBC which associates Eutelsat with their renewed appeal for action by regulatory authorities to combat this violation of international rights.

Over more than two years Eutelsat has publicly condemned intentional jamming of its satellites by third parties, organised to prevent reception of international Farsi channels including BBC Persian, Voice of America and Deutsche Welle. We have identified the location of the jamming from within Iran, and since May 2009, have filed multiple complaints with the relevant French and international regulatory authorities to denounce hostile jamming operations and to prompt the International Telecommunication Union (a United Nations Agency) to address this illegal practice as a priority issue.

Eutelsat maintains a constant dialogue with international Farsi channels and service providers affected by deliberate jamming. The company has repeatedly organised transmissions of these channels through other satellites in its fleet in order to provide the continuity of service that we constantly endeavour to deliver. These efforts are recognised by the BBC, including in their statement of September 7.

Deliberate jamming prevents satellite reception, creates collateral damage for other broadcasters and is contrary to international conventions for the use of satellites. Efforts to combat it are a priority issue for Eutelsat. Michel de Rosen, Eutelsat CEO, says: “In our capacity as a satellite operator we remain committed to defeating this abuse. We call on those of influence to do all they can to impress upon Iran the illegal nature of intentional jamming and the need to cease this activity immediately."

ESAT Radio jammed

While tuning in to ESAT Radio on 14th Nov (Monday) at 1659 UTC on 15370 kHz found that the channel was empty, scanning the adjacant channels found a weak station on 15390, searching this frequency on web, came accross this announcement on ESAT Radio website that they are now operating on two different frequencies 15370 & 15390 kHz........

At 1715 UTC when I re-checked 15390 kHz only white noise was audible. This noise sounds similar to the DRM hash.

On wednesday, 15th Nov 2011, jammer was noted on 15370 at 1700 UTC sign on & 1801 sign off. On 16th Nov ESAT Radio signed on at 1659 UTC & jammer again came up at 1700 UTC on 15390 kHz.

Posts: 42 ... due to the bad luck, the DRM exciter has stuck and the transmitter remained on carrier only, that's the worse start of a new proejcet i could imagine. But thanks for monitoring, we hope we will get it fixed for the next transmission.

Many thanks for monitoring folks, every time the beggining is difficult, but let's hope it will lead to positive results in the future.

NASB Participates in New DRM Broadcast

Spaceline, a new HFCC member headquartered in Bulgaria, will begin a three-month series of DRM broadcasts on November 12. The three-hour program block will be called "DRM Mix" and will be aired each Saturday from 1800-2100 UTC on 7590 kHz using a 100-kilowatt transmitter in Armenia beamed to Europe. The AWR Wavescan DX program will be part of the DRM program lineup, as well programs from NASB member Trans World Radio and HCJB Global.
Wavescan is broadcast in analogue mode via the AWR worldwide network, as well as on NASB member stations WRMI in Miami and WWCR in Tennessee. DRM Mix will be broadcast at least through January, 2012.

TWR Extends Outreach to Asia

Guam Transmitter Upgrade Features Live On-Air Dedication on Nov. 18

CARY, NC, November 10, 2011-Striving to extend its strategic outreach in Asia, international Christian media organization TWR has upgraded its powerful shortwave transmission station on the island of Guam. The advancement gives TWR the ability to cover much of the spiritually needy region, including China and southeast Asia, with a robust, quality signal.

TWR is now well-positioned to reach listeners across Asia into the future, and reception is excellent anywhere - from cities to dense forests.

Radio Pollikontho 99.2 has started its test transmission

Radio Pollikontho a community radio initiative by BRAC has started its test transmission in the area of Chandnighat union of Moulovibajar district.

Mr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, District Commissioner of Moulovibazar, Md. Ashraful Alam Khan, UNO Upazila Moulovibazar, Anna Minj, Director, BRAC Community Empowerment Programme, AHM. Bazlur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer, Bangladesh NGO's Network for Radio and Communication were present to attend the inauguration of test transmission.

District print and electronic media representative, BRAC officials and members of the executive committee of "Radio Pollikontho" were also present at the ceremony.

"Radio Pollikontho" will be broadcasting to promote socio-economic development as well as access to information of the local people as a sustainable and accessible instrument focusing on women and children from the grassroots level, ensuring people's participation in the rural development, promoting life and livelihood of the local people and their heritage and culture.

Development news will be broadcasted along with education, local tainment and development motivation, specially using local dialect.

"Radio Pollikontho" will be available in the radius of a 17 k.m around the station at Moulovibazar Sadar. With the assistance of BRAC Community Empowerment Programme and community people "Radio Pollikontho" is expected to become a popular and effective tool to develop community awareness, ensuring people's rights and contribute in building digital Bangladesh.

Radio Pollikontho will be starting its full fledge transmission soon.

Senior broadcast engineers from India and China have won ABU Excellence Awards. Ashok Kumar Bhatnagar of Doordarshan, India, and Wang Jianqiang of Shanghai Media Group, China (nominated by RTPRC-China), won the ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award and the ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award respectively.
